Family Liaison Corner
My name is Melissa Hedrick, and I will be working with you this year. I am very excited to serve as your School Family Liaison. As a parent of two PWCS students, I believe in full participation at your child's school. Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. I'm here to help!

What does a Family Liaison do?
A School Family Liaison serves as a communication link between home and school. They welcome and orient families to the schools and familiarize the families with the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. The primary role of the School Family Liaison is to empower parents to become active participants in the education of their children to ensure their child's academic and social success in school.
How can I support you?
- Encourage open communication between you and school personnel.
- Explain the process of conferences and school meetings.
- Explain school policies, practices, and programs.
- Provide information about school goals, resources, and activities.
- Provide various communication platforms that engage families:
- Parent Vue
- School Status (supports multiple languages translations)
- School Newsletter
- School Website

- October 14th - No school for student - Professional Development Day
- Families - Please have your students check the LOST and FOUND RACK - Located next to the gym
- Nurse Trainor Needs Gently Used Clothing for the clinic (boy and girl pants- leggings, sweatpants, athletic wear pants) all sizes K-5th grade.
Alvey Elementary will be participating in the annual Fall Food Drive -Starting October 7th-October 22nd
Help stock the shelves at the Hunger Resource Center to ensure we're ready to meet the heightened demand for resources during the holiday season. Each classroom will also be competing to collect the most food items listed on the above linked flyer. The classroom with the most items collected will win indoor recess games for their class to enjoy.

Community and Family Engagement
The Family Engagement Series provides families with resources that will assist with their student’s success. The series is led by the Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) Community Outreach, Business Partnerships and Philanthropy Department, in collaboration with other PWCS programs, and community and business partners.

Varsity Tutors
PWCS has a new partnership with Varsity Tutors, which replaced Paper Tutoring on July 1. Students in grades K-12 can access free 1:1 on-demand 24/7 tutoring in a variety of subjects, on-demand essay editing and coaching, college prep and admissions resources, self-study and practice resources, and celebrity-led resources.
To learn more about Varsity Tutors, please visit the Student Learning Launchpad to register for an information session. The Family Engagement Series will also host a session for families on October 8. Stay tuned for that information.
Community Partner - Willing Warriors Retreat Link
Provide cost-free retreat stays and programs that positively impact wounded, ill, and injured service members, disabled Veterans, and their families.

Trick or Treatment
On October 26, we are having our second annual Trick or Treatment festival at the H.L. Mooney Water Reclamation Facility. It is a free, open-house event inviting the community to trick-or-treat around tables hosted by local organizations and learn more about the environment.

Water Art Invitational
Our annual high school art competition asking students to create creative and original artwork depicting the 2025 theme, “Your Water, Your Environment.” Students are eligible to win cash prizes and recognition for their art. Informational presentations are available now!
