Devorah Heitner, author of Screenwise and Growing up in Public, will be coming to St. Vrain for Parent University at Frederick High School. Dr. Heitner will be talking to parents about how to help tweens and teens navigate boundaries, identity, privacy, and reputation in their digital world. Parents can expect practical insights into effectively navigating the digital world with their children. You can learn more and sign up to attend here. In addition, Dr. Heitner's blog has many articles families may find helpful.
If you’ve ever said “I’m so glad my teenage years weren’t shared for the world to see,” this talk is for you! With social media and constant connection, the boundaries of privacy for children are stretched thin.Growing Up in Public shows parents how to help tweens and teens navigate boundaries, identity, privacy, and reputation in their digital world.
Dr. Devorah Heitner is the author of Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World and Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive) in Their Digital World. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and CNN Opinion. She has a Ph.D. in Media/Technology & Society from Northwestern University and has taught at DePaul and Northwestern. Student Design Guild: The Student Design Guild seeks to create experiential learning opportunities that transcend the traditional classroom and engage the entire community in STEM and design work. In this Student Design Guild, teachers can support their students on a design journey, either in the classroom, or by providing information to parents for students to work independently at home. See the attached flier for details. Teachers can have their entire class participate, or even just a small group. Students can participate independently at home, or invite a friend to work on your project with you! Please contact Kristen Brohm, Director of STEM Education at the Innovation Center, for more information. Anyone can enter!
