Research-supported Literacy Essentials lessons continue for Grades 4-5 on Michigan Learning Channel
Last month we announced that the Literacy Essentials are now also represented in Read, Write, ROAR! Upper Elementary (Grades 4-5). As part of this partnership with Detroit PBS, MAISA has been involved in the teacher onboarding training, planning, scripting, editing, and review process of these new resources.
On September 16, episodes started airing statewide on the Michigan Learning Channel! New episodes are premiering most Mondays throughout the school year at noon, with replays on Wednesdays and Fridays.
- You can find the broadcast on your local Michigan Learning Channel station. To check your local listings, please visit this page.

- To revisit episodes or share it with others later, the digital versions will be available here: Episode Online and, eventually, on the YouTube MLC Channel, too.

Check out sample videos below featuring a teacher, Mrs. DeFauw, and content creator, Mr. Roose.
Danielle DeFauw, Ph.D. (University of Michigan, Dearborn) connects to standards about commerce and models how to take notes and write summaries to help remember key ideas from different texts. In this interactive lesson, students dive into multiple sources to learn about Rosie the Riveter and the impact on Michigan's manufacturing. Check out the episode to explore how this iconic figure motivated women during WWII.
Mr. Paul Roose (Naturalist/Outdoor Educator) takes us on a nature walk and demonstrates how scientists make observations, take notes, review and then reflect on the information they gather over time. There is so much packed into this calming, informative 4 minute episode that is connected to Michigan writing and science standards!
The newly-released Lesson Plan Guides for the Grades K to 3 Read, Write, ROAR! series were designed during the filming phase (2021-2022) and utilized by the coaches and teachers from the K to 3 series to scope and guide the work. MAISA contracted support to get the Lesson Plan Guides aligned across the grade levels and reviewed/revised across for full alignment and accuracy. Our Lesson Plan Guides linked to Read, Write, ROAR! episodes can help
save the day! This one page document, holds links for 16 (!) different Lesson Plan Guide documents!
Going forward, each month we will highlight a feature within the Lesson Plan Guides to give some tips to use them. To see last month's information, check out the Summer 2024 newsletter.
Lesson Plan Guide Connections to Professional Learning
Read Write, ROAR! episodes & connections to Dr. Nell Duke's recent presentation to ISD Early Literacy Coaches
In mid-September, the MAISA Early Literacy Coaching Network held our "New" Coach Kick-Off. Under the leadership and guidance of Erin Brown and Dr. Susan L'Allier, and with support from ISD Coach Coordinators, this week of learning brought 80 new coaches into the statewide Network.
As part of this learning, presentations from Dr. Nell K. Duke were shown. Dr. Duke shared many insightful aspects of research that she lifted from Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy: Grades K to 3. When highlighting specific parts of Essential 6 (writing), she referred to the IES Practice Guide, Teaching Elementary School Students to be Effective Writers, which was used to inform the writing of the K to 3 Essentials. The COPS/CAPS and peer revising strategies are both represented in Read, Write, ROAR! episodes.
Below, I will outline two episode connections so that you can see how Read, Write, ROAR! lifts examples of Literacy Essentials in action! This snapshot of the Lesson Plan Guide for episodes 411 & 412 shows everything in the episodes, connections to standards and Literacy Essentials. Checklists used from Inside Information: Developing Powerful Readers and Writers of Informational Text Through Project-Based Instruction by Nell K. Duke are available at Dr. Duke’s website.
Episode 411: CAPS Strategy
Episode 411: Checklists for Editing
Episode 412: Peer Feedback
In episode (412) (beginning at minute 9:06) I read the informational text I wrote. I ask for the students to think about feedback they would give me related to the sentence stems in Dr. Duke's book. Then, 1st Grade partner, Miss Rodgers, models using the feedback protocol (beginning at minute 20:19) to support me as a writer. Since we don’t have students when filming the show, we model the strategy so educators can see how they might be able to use it in their classrooms.
Read this free document, Teaching Elementary School Students to be Effective Writers, in tandem with the Essential 6 from Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy: Grades K to 3 to know how to provide children with high-quality, research-supported writing instruction.
Last month we shared information about the Iconic Michigan Fellowship that launched during the 2023-24 school year. Now there's another chance for 5th – 12th grade teachers in Michigan to join! This is a paid, media-making fellowship that celebrates Michigan. MLC leaders will provide you with expertise, equipment, and more so you can work with your classroom to make short documentary-style videos about a landmark in your community.
The fall semester (through December 2024) will be spent building community, learning, and practicing skills in media literacy and media production. Beginning in January 2025, you will transition to project design and implementation, which means you should plan to run the project with students between January and May 2025.

REVISED! K to 3 Literacy Essentials: Read, Write, ROAR! - Word Builders 1, Version 2.
BRAND NEW!! K to 3 Literacy Essentials: Read, Write, ROAR! - Word Builders 2
Course 1: K to 3 Literacy Essentials: Read, Write, ROAR! - Word Builders 1, Version 2.
The first version of this course had over 243 engagements with a 5 star rating! It was available to complete until September 18, 2024. The new version represents content from the updated Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy: Grades K to 3, new and updated resources, and new videos.
Description: Mystery Words and Word Ladders are fun, interactive lessons that allow students to play with sounds by segmenting, blending, adding, substituting, and deleting sounds as they study words and discover spelling patterns. These two lessons are aligned to the Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy: Grades K to 3, specifically practices 4, 5, & 6. In the course, by explicitly explaining letter-sound and sound-letter relationships, you will learn how to replicate these lessons in your classroom to support phonological awareness development (particularly phonemic awareness), alphabet knowledge, and sound-spelling knowledge.
Recently Launched!! Course 2: K to 3 Literacy Essentials: Read, Write, ROAR! - Word Builders 2
Description: This second course in our Word Builders series will highlight research-supported practices that help children learn about letter-sound and sound-letter relationships. The Letter Heroes lesson type in this course provides a protocol educators can use to teach children the letter name, sound, and formation of the targeted letter within the lesson. In addition, children can find the letter in the text, demonstrating the real-world application of learning. High-Frequency Words lesson types will demonstrate how educators can use research-supported practices to teach these words that are necessarily aligned to "rules" of spelling. Rather than telling kids to memorize the words (which doesn't work!), these lessons will demonstrate how to show children to use what they know about letter names and sounds so they can discover how high-frequency words "work." These two lesson types are aligned to the Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy: Grades K to 3, specifically practices 4, 5, & 6. In the course, by explicitly explaining letter-sound and sound-letter relationships, you will learn how to replicate these lessons in your classroom to support phonological awareness development (particularly phonemic awareness), alphabet knowledge, and sound-spelling knowledge.
