I would like to draw your attention to the image of 'arms raised' in Sunday’s Gospel.

When we are concerned about something important how often do we raise our hands and arms to emphasise our concern. One can imagine the widow in the Gospel taken from Luke18:1-8 pleading with the unjust judge doing the same. She kept at him and never gave in because she knew she was being treated unjustly. She believed that eventually she would win through and she did. She held the moral high ground.

Jesus uses the story to encourage us not to lose heart and to keep the faith despite the energy and time it takes to achieve our goals. How many cases in this country have there been where a miscarriage of justice has taken place? How many times has that wrongful decision been overturned because enough people have spoken out and refused to give up, sometimes over many years. The Peter Ellis case is a recent example.

I think of Jesus’ own fight against injustice, even to his death and resurrection. He lives out and gives witness to the parable that he tells his disciples. We look to him to keep the faith and never lose heart. He extends his arms upon the cross for our sake and never grows weary. We can be assured that the long haul to ensure justice is done is worth it and that he is on our side.

Condolence and sympathy to Mrs Judith Fromont and the Fromont family at the recent passing of her father in law Barrie Fromont. Barrie was an active member of both the school and parish community of Holy Cross Papatoetoe and he contributed so much in so many different ways. May he Rest in Peace.

Dear Parents

Week 10 and we have completed a full term of 10 weeks with so much to celebrate.

Our staff and students have all been working hard to ensure everyone has made positive gains in all areas of their learning. We have been working to encourage students to take ownership of their own hauora - wellbeing. Students are developing an understanding of their own needs physically, spiritually, socially and emotionally.

There has also been an emphasis on engagement and attendance and we are pleased to say that across the school we have had 87% attendance school wide. While this is good we will still be contacting individual students whose attendance is causing concerns as they are having spasmodic unexplained absences. While we are very aware of sickness, students should be attending 90% - 95% each term. A 10% absence is 5 days which equates to a whole week off school and daily lateness and early finishes are also recorded on our electronic rolls which are calculated as absences as well. This is why it is important to instill in your children the importance of punctuality and timekeeping as this reflects one's ability to self manage as future adults.

Welcome to Term 4, the busy, exciting and final term of the year.

I hope the holidays provided everyone with some down time to recharge and reflect on what we have done and what we still want to achieve this year. Hopefully, you are not already feeling pressured by the daunting thought that Christmas is only 11 weeks away. Let us pause and live in the present and celebrate what we plan to achieve this term and not be overwhelmed by the future and commercialism of the Christmas Season.

New Staff Member

We are delighted to welcome Mrs Seneuefa Henry to our staff this term. She will be teaching in Year 1, Room 1 and will be part of the Aroha Team.

New Appointment

We also congratulate Mrs Goretti Meredith who will be in Room 11, Year 3 and 4, and she will be the Team Leader for Te Matauranga.

School will be closed next Monday as it is a Public Holiday.

If you have still not returned your raffle tickets please do so immediately. If you have lost your tickets and return the $20.00 we can submit your tickets as we have a record of all books that were issued. We need to be able to account for all books sold or unsold so please return all tickets by Wednesday 19 October.

This term our weekly school assemblies will be held on Monday afternoons after lunch as we have finished our swimming programme..

Our School Masses and Liturgies will remain on Wednesdays at 9.00am or if it is a Junior School lIturgy it will be at 2.00pm

At the end of last term we had 68 books overdue from our school library. If you receive a letter please try and locate the book as the fine does not cover the cost of replacing the book. We would actually prefer the book to be returned. If it is lost please clear the fine immediately as it increases the longer it is unpaid.

CORE Education in collaboration with Auckland Council are offering a free 8-hour introduction Digital Literacy workshop in Samoan for our Samoan elders held in Rooms 6 7 & 8 the Year 7 & 8 Rangimarie Hub.

The workshops will run over the following nights, from 6 pm - 8 pm.

Sincere thanks to Mrs Nola Lucre and Ms Kate Lang who have worked tirelessly with these students developing their skills and ensuring they could master the expected routines.

Congratulations to all of our teams that competed in the St Anne’s Shield. After three years of cancellations it was really exciting to see all our Catholic Schools participating with so much enthusiasm. Everyone played well and showed good sportsmanship which resulted in us being first overall and retaining the shield for another year. Sincere thanks to all our players, coaches and supporters who have worked hard developing the skill levels in our students and encouraging them to participate and develop their qualities as good sports people.

Tiare Ryan represented Auckland in the Under 14 Hockey Tournament that took place in the first weekend of the holidays. It was a tournament involving more than 20 teams from Northland, North Harbour, Waikato, Tauranga and Auckland. As a result of being part of the U14 Auckland team, she has the opportunity to travel to Australia in 2023 to participate in tournaments in Melbourne and Brisbane.

We also congratulate our Year 8 students who were excellent ambassadors for our school while they were away on their Outdoor Education Camp. The girls mastered the art of skiing without poles for two days at Mount Ruapehu, then they tackled the Tongariro River where they completed the rafting course and their final destination before heading home was the Waitomo Caves. Sincere thanks to Mr Ginders who coordinated and planned this trip with Mrs Betz Ryan as well as Mr Brbich, Mr Cowan and Mrs Dinesh who were parent helpers. For many of these students this may be a once in a lifetime experience and we are very thankful to our BOT who provide financial support to ensure all of our students are able to participate in this excursion.

Despite the fluctuating temperatures and uncertain weather conditions students are able to wear their summer uniform. This is optional until Tuesday, 25 October when everyone will be expected to be in the correct summer uniform.

We wish to remind whanau that they agreed to our uniform policy when they enrolled at our school and that it is their responsibility to ensure this is upheld and their child/children wear the correct uniform neatly and with pride.

A sunhat is compulsory and must be worn in Terms 1 and Terms 4. We encourage our students to be sunsmart and to be responsible for their own wellbeing and we enforce this rule with a ‘no hat, no play’ rule. Please ensure all hats are clearly named as well as the rest of their uniforms.

On Tuesday, after the St Anne’s Tournament, the Year 8 girls will depart for their final school camp. They will travel to Tongariro Holiday Park and the next day they will head for Mt Ruapehu for their ski experience. After ski lessons they will have the opportunity to practise their skiing for the afternoon. The following morning they’ll be going White Water Rafting and on Friday morning they will visit the Waitomo Caves before travelling back to Auckland.

This is a once in a lifetime experience for some of our students and I hope they will really enjoy and learn from this experience. Special thanks to Mr Ginders, Mrs Ryan, Mrs Kelly and the parents, Mr Brbich, Mr Cowan and Mrs Dinesh who will be accompanying the students on this trip.

Over the holidays our attendance dues accounts were reviewed and it was noted that several families need to increase their automatic payments to ensure their accounts are cleared by the end of the school year. There are also some families who may prefer to opt for automatic

payments as their accounts are in arrears. If you wish to set up an automatic payment please use the BNZ Account 02-0232-0158405-97 and use your child’s name as a reference.

During school holidays, I went to Tauranga with my Dad and Mum. First I wen to Te Puna Quarry Park. There were beautiful gardens, plants and sculptures. Then I went to Marshell's Animal Park. I had lots of fun feeding the animals. Next I went to Papamoa Beach where I collected some shells with my Dad and played in a park nearby. After I played in the park, I ate lunch. Guess what? It was delicious!! Later I went to Hairy Maclary Park and sat on the Hairy Maclary sculptures. Finally I went to a motel to stay overnight. The next morning, I went to a few more places and then went home. I enjoyed the big trip very very much!!
