Empathy for Otters
Welcome March! We had a tremendous first week of March after returning from our February vacation. Most students completed the Writing portion of the New Hampshire Statewide Assessment System, NHSAS, and worked very hard doing so! Here at CLS, we encouraged students to use the tools and strategies they have learned and been practicing all year for writing, provided them with a small snack, and asked them to take their time and do their best. We greatly appreciate the support and encouragement from home - it showed in how our students truly took the assessment time seriously and gave great efforts. State testing will resume again in the middle of May with Mathematics and Reading for each grade and an additional section in Science for 5th grade students.
We also celebrated Read Across America week at CLS last week. Students enjoyed reading at Camp Crescent Lake (tents and lights set up in the gym), our daily reading trivia challenges, our schoolwide DEAR time, and a book swap. Our students love reading and we love reading with them! In April, we will be hosting the Spring Scholastic Book Fair, another great reading event to look forward to!
In the month of March, we are learning about showing empathy for others. We gathered as a school community and began the month at a kick-off assembly and read the book We're All Wonders by R.J. Palacio. Students will be challenged to put themselves in the shoes of others and try to see things the ways others do. We ended the assembly and left for Otter Family Team meetings with this quote, "Empathy is seeing with the eyes on another, listening with the ears of another, and feeling with the heart of another."

Each foster, adopted, or child living with relatives presents unique joys and challenges to those who undertake their care. If/when the caregivers of these children need help, the Central NH Foster & Adoptive Parent Support Group utilizes their members' collective experiences so that no one feels alone on this journey.
The group's mission is to support, encourage, and educate foster, adoptive, and relative caregiver families in our local area with monthly meetings where caregivers meet and kids play together. The organization provides resources, training, and most importantly, an opportunity to share experiences that help navigate complex family scenarios. Dinner is provided for $5 per family and childcare is provided by background-checked volunteers.
Contact the coordinator of the program, Beth Maltzie, at bmaltzie@gmail.com for more information.
