The DBQ Project California Summit
Using The DBQ Project to Address Learning Loss
Please Join Us
The DBQ Project would like to welcome our California partners to participate in an afternoon summit to examine ways of effectively combating learning loss through the use of the DBQ Project curriculum.
After spending the better part of two years online, many districts throughout California are now facing the reality of learning loss amongst their students. Additionally, working in the most diverse state in the country, California educators must be cognizant of the unique assets our students bring to the table. Doing so will help us reach all students. We will be exploring two strands during the summit:
- The 6-Step Method as a Key to Student Engagement and Culturally Responsive Teaching
- Visible Learning and the DBQ Project: Implementing Practices that Accelerate Student Learning

The 6-Step Method as a Key to Student Engagement and Culturally Responsive Teaching
How can teaching with The DBQ Project help teachers build their students’ confidence and spark their interest in learning? Using explicit strategies to teach skills and promote independent thinking must replace teacher-centered content delivery. This session will focus on engagement strategies teachers need to use to build a more inclusive classroom culture. The focus of this session will be to highlight teaching opportunities embedded in the 6-Step Method that encourage students to express their own views and draw their own conclusions about important, relevant historical and social issues.
Visible Learning for DBQs: Implementing Practices that Accelerate Student Learning
Applying the research of John Hattie and other pedagogy experts, we will explore high impact instructional principles and practices that can be employed throughout the DBQ Project Six-Step Method. John Hattie has identified over a hundred high-impact factors that can accelerate the learning process, and which can help combat the learning loss caused by COVID's disruption to our education system.
During the session we will examine where and how the following promising principles can be transformed into concrete and effective strategies.
- Motivation
- Elaborate Encoding
- Cognitive Load
- Feedback
