What is Structured Literacy?
During Parent-Teacher Conferences, you will hear teachers refer to structured literacy and for many parents this term may not be familiar. Structured literacy refers to a systematic, explicit approach to reading instruction that includes all of the components necessary to develop reading skills, including foundational skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, sight recognition) and higher-level literacy skills (comprehension, verbal reasoning, written expression). During a structured literacy lesson teachers explicitly teach students phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills using decodable text. Lessons are designed to build skills identified in the assessment data collected. As students become more fluent readers other types of text structures are introduced to develop skills and transition students from learning to read to reading to learn. Structured literacy lessons are part of our tier 1, tier 2, and tier 3 instruction. For more information, please click on the article below.
Purple Pinky Day - October 24
Thursday October 24th is World Polio Day. Rotary International has been working to eliminate Polio for the past 35 years and the world has been getting very close to that goal with Polio now endemic in only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The Maynard Public Schools has partnered with Middlesex Savings Bank, and our local Rotary Club of Nashoba Valley as we assist with the drive to end Polio once and for all.
Purple Pinky Day is a fundraiser where families across the United States give $1.00, or whatever they think is best, to pay for inoculating kids in the developing countries where Polio still exists. Best of all, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation matches $2 for every $1 raised so your money will go even farther. It costs $1 to inoculate 1 child. Your dollar, coupled with the matching funds, will help ensure 3 children are protected against Polio. Middlesex Savings will conduct the counting, and provide a bank check for the funds and the bank has once again also provided all the envelopes we use.
The envelopes went home in backpacks today and can be returned to school anytime between October 18th-October 25. 100% of the funds collected here in Maynard will be donated to the campaign to eradicate Polio.
Parent -Teacher Conferences
Teachers will be sharing sign-ups for conferences during the last two weeks of October. Our early release day on October 25, is dedicated to these meetings but teachers will post additional time slots throughout the two weeks depending on their availability. Please be sure to sign up to a time to discuss your child's start to the school year. If you would like translation services during your conference and your child's teacher has not already contacted you about setting this up, please let your child's teacher know as soon as possible.
Preschool Autumn Celebration
Preschool will celebrate autumn by inviting one caregiver per child during an art class with Green Meadow art teacher Taylor Vanaria from 10:05 to 10:20 am at the end of October and in early November. Please see RSVP details in an incoming email from your child's pre-k teacher soon. If this celebration conflicts with your schedule, rest assured that other opportunities to visit the classroom will be offered throughout the year. Happy fall!
