A Message To Families From Mr. Peck
Riverview Families,
A question that got asked many times during parent/teacher conferences was "What can I do to support my child's learning at home?" We are blessed to have so many families who are deeply invested in the education of their child and we have created a valuable tool for all of you to help support your child's learning when they are not at school. Click here to see our "At Home Literacy Resources" webpage that includes helpful tools for parents and family members to use to support literacy in the home. Of course we want our students to read for at least 20 minutes each night, but the resources found on this site give parents a few extra ideas of what can be done to build important skills in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Check it out and have some fun connecting with your child while you help build their literacy skills. If we all work together, I know we can help our learners become strong readers!
Also, it is National School Bus Safety Week! Click here for some helpful tips from Marschall Lines on how to make sure we keep everyone safe on the way to and from school (These tips are also mentioned below). Please discuss these tips with your child if they ride the bus. We want to make absolute sure that our learners get to and from school safely and that everyone has a positive experience while they are on the bus. You can help us by reviewing these safety tips and ensuring they know the expectations around respecting the driver, staying seated, facing forward, staying out of the aisle while the bus is in motion, keeping hands to themselves, using appropriate language, and speaking in a reasonable volume. We appreciate your help with this!
Best wishes for a great week!
Shawn Peck
Principal

It's National School Bus Safety Week; Follow Tips To Ensure Your Child's Safety
School bus transportation plays a critical role in the education of our nation's students, and is the
direct link between a neighborho od and the classroom. More than 25 million children ride the yellow bus every school day, and National School Bus Safety Week serves as a reminder for students, parents, teachers, and the community to keep school bus safety in the forefront. Here are tips to keep our children safe at the bus stop.
Getting Ready for School
• Have your children put everything they carry in a backpack or school bag so that they won’t
drop things along the way.
• Encourage them to wear bright, contrasting colors so they will be easily seen by drivers.
• Make sure children leave home on time so they can arrive at the bus stop before it is due,
ideally at least five minutes early. Running after or in front of a bus is dangerous.
Walking to the Bus Stop
• Walk young children to the bus stop or encourage children to walk in groups. There is safety
in numbers; groups are easier for drivers to see.
• Practice good pedestrian behavior: walk on the sidewalk, and if there is no sidewalk stay out
of the street. If you must walk in the street, walk single file, face traffic and stay as close to
the edge of the road as you can.
• Stop and look left, right and then left again if you must cross the street. Do the same thing at
drive -ways and alleys. Exaggerate your head turns and narrate your actions so your child
knows you are looking left, right and left.
At the Bus Stop
• Have children wait in a location where the driver can see them while driving down the street.
Try to avoid waiting in a house or car.
• Do not let children play in the street. Playing with balls or other toys that could roll into the
street is also dangerous.
Getting On and Off the Bus
• Warn children that if they drop something getting on and off the bus, they should never pick it
up. Instead, they should tell the driver and follow the driver’s instructions.
• Remind children to look to the right before they step off the bus.
• If you meet your child at the bus stop after school, wait on the side where the child will be
dropped off, not across the street. Children can be so excited to see you after school that
they dash across the street and forget the safety rules.
• If children need to cross the street when boarding/unloading the bus, children need to wait
for the driver’s signal indicating it is safe to cross.
Mobile Devices
Cell phones and other electronic devices are often permitted on the school bus as long as:
• They are in backpacks or other holders, keeping hands free to use handrails while boarding
and departing the bus.
• Sound is muted or headphones, ear buds or similar devices are used.
• Content does not violate the law or school district
We Are Close To Our Fundraising Goal! Keep Sharing the Opportunity to Donate!!
As of 4:00 on Sunday, Oct. 20 our school has raised $31,290 for our CARES Fun Run Fundraiser. We are so close to meeting our goal! Thank you to every person in our Riverview community for this amazing support. Here are some other facts and figures:
- Over 80% of our learners have registered online, which is great. But we want to get everyone involved! If you haven't already, click here and get registered! (School Identifier: 630cf7ad5ca17). If you need any help getting registered or sharing the link, please reach out to your child's teacher. They can help!
- We have several students who have registered but have not shared the link with anyone. You can text it, email it, or post it to social media. I have had so many people tell me that they want to support our school so invite them to do so via this fundraiser! If you haven't already, think about what friends, neighbors, or family members might be willing to donate and help impact our school in a positive way.
- Ms. schultz/Ms. Bakken's kindergarten classroom is currently leading the way with over $2500 raised just by those students! Ms. Foster's class is in 2nd place, Ms. Huppert's is in 3rd, Ms. Claycomb is in 4th, and Ms. Eschle is in 5th.
INCENTIVE UPDATE:
- If we reach $32,000 and a group of Riverview teachers & staff members will actually pitch tents and camp on the roof of the school! We will do a Facebook Live event in which we read bedtime stories to our students from the roof of the school!
- If we reach $32,000 AND we receive donations from ALL 50 STATES, our administrative assistant Ms. Sally VanValkenburg will dye her hair purple!
- And if we go WAY beyond our goal, and reach our "pie-in-the-sky" goal of $38,000, Mr. Peck will wear Vikings gear while he gets pied in the face with purple pies!
WHAT DO WE USE THE MONEY FOR?
All money raised goes right back into our school to create learning experiences for our students and to provide them with the resources they need to be successful in school and in life. Some examples of things that Fun Run money have supported:
- A new 3-D printer for our media center
- MYRA books and charms for our MYRA challenge
- Our annual African drumming residency
- Field trips, which provide memorable learning experiences
- STEM/Maker Space supplies
- Spring Project Based Learning Showcase Materials
Seesaw/Learning Ally/Raz Kids (software that supports personalized learning and student achievement in literacy & math)
- New playground equipment
- iNature supplies
- Much More!
EVENT DETAILS:

A Note About Our "Pie In The Sky" Fundraising Goal of $38,000 From Ms. Olson!
From Mrs. Olson:
We are SO close to achieving our school goal of $32,000….over 15 teachers are prepped and ready to camp on the roof on Monday, Nov. 4th (Information will be coming from the RVES PTP about the opportunity to “observe” and to join us virtually for a Facebook Live bedtime story time).
This year we also made a PIE IN THE SKY goal. Last year we raised $38,000 and we decided to lower our goal this year due to decreased enrollment. We also needed to up the ante if we achieve something this INCREDIBLE….enter Mr. Peck! If you didn’t know, dear Mr. Peck is a huge Packer fan—his blood truly runs green and gold! He has somewhat willingly agreed to dress in the PURPLE/GOLD Vikings gear and get pied in the face by 1 teacher from each grade level (the highest earning classroom teacher in each grade). Please help us reach beyond our goal if you can….teachers are so excited at the opportunity to PIE him it almost makes me think of giving up my “gym” gig and become a classroom teacher😊
Thank you all for your continued support of our learners and teachers at Riverview Elementary! We are very lucky to have you and your extended family and friends around the world!

Help Us Keep Oct. 31 a Day of Learning; No Costumes at School Please
For several years now, Riverview has asked for parent cooperation in making sure that Halloween remains a day of structure, routine, and learning at school. We kindly ask that students leave all costumes, face paint, masks, etc. at home that day and wait until they get home to begin the Halloween festivities.
Reminder: No Caffeinated Drinks Allowed at Riverview
In recent weeks, we have seen an uptick in caffeinated beverages during the mornings and at lunch. Please refrain from sending your child to school with caffeinated soda, energy drinks, Bubbl'rs, etc.
Yearbooks For 24-25 Are Now Available To Order From Jostens
Yearbooks for the 24-25 school year are now available to order from Jostens. They are $16 plus tax and you will be able to order anytime up until March 10. Click the link below to order (and be sure to know your child's classroom teacher while ordering).
We Need Your Help! We Are In Need of More Paraprofessional Substitutes!
Our paraprofessionals are a vital part of our team and they do so much every day for our students. Like everyone, they have to miss work from time to time due to illness, family matters, etc. When that happens, it leaves our learners with less support. And unfortunately, often times these absences go "unfilled" due to a shortage of capable and willing subs. That is why we are asking for people in our Riverview community to consider being a para sub. The pay is $15 per hour and you can work as much (or as little) as you want. Whether you sub one day or every day, each time you enter a classroom, you are responsible for the helping the most important resource we have in our school -- our children.
If you would like to sign up to sub as a teacher or paraprofessional for the Farmington Schools you will have to apply through Teachers on Call (TOC). Please email or call TOC directly at 1800-713-4439 or apply online at teachersoncall.com.
