Ms Scott leaves us today to begin her maternity leave and we are all very excitedly waiting for baby photos and we cannot to meet him/her when they arrive. Poor Ms Scott is certainly ready for a sit down as baby has been causing mischief for a little while now! Last night, the staff all got together to arrange some baby games and presents including 'Guess the Baby' which I have included below for your amusement and i'll pop the answers in next time. We will all really miss her but don't worry we have made her promise to visit!
Have a lovely weekend!
Our Learning
Pearls
Welcome back to the second half of the summer term! We can’t believe how quickly this academic year is going, it will be the summer holidays before we know it!
The week before half term we finished our Nature Detectives theme. We read the story ‘The Bad-Tempered Ladybird’ and ‘Egg to Bee’ a non-fiction book about the lifecycle of a bee. In the classroom we have been ordering the lifecycle of a bee and sequencing ‘The Bad-tempered Ladybird’ story. We have also written our own page (using a different animal) to continue the story of ‘The Bad-Tempered Ladybird’. In our provision we have been listening to stories, collaging bee hives using a variety of materials and using ladybirds to practise our doubling. In maths we have focused on quick recall of our doubling facts, and we have also been using counting bears to half numbers.
This week we have started our new theme ‘Turrets and Tiara’s’ and we have been learning about the legend of Saint George and the dragon. In our provision, we have been creating St. George’s flags using different materials at our creative tables and using red and white pegs on pegboards. We have also been playing phonics games to learn our tricky words. In maths lessons we have been working more independently when adding and subtracting numbers.
Next week we will be learning about dragons! It will also be our Sports day on Wednesday morning – fingers crossed for some lovely weather!
Rubies
Welcome back! We hope you’ve all had a lovely rest during half term and ready to start our last term in school before finishing for this academic year. Rubies children became builders and built houses replicating those of London back in 1666. Great thought and detail have been put into the houses, including thatched roofs. These houses have been used to recreate ‘The Great Fire of London’ and were burnt down due to the spark that ignited in the bakery. The children were able to see how fast the fire spread through the houses and the damage that would have been caused back in 1666.
Over the past few weeks in art the children have been focusing on the famous artist L.S. Lowry. We have now completed our L.S. Lowry cityscape collage. We have built up our work concentrating on the different elements involved in creating our finished artwork. We’ve looked at the background, building and people and how they all change sizes due to where they are in the artist work. I’m sure you’ll all agree how wonderful the children’s work is and has a Lowry feel to it.
We are continuing with our habitats work in science and have enjoyed a micro habitat hunt looking at the condition's mini beasts. We have begun our research project choosing one habitat to research and create a fact file of information.
In phonics we are concentrating on level 5 alternative sounds and which sound family they belong to. We’ve been learning to read and write many tricky words.
Diamonds
Towards the end of half-term, we experienced Driffield Food and Farming Show, albeit very wet, everyone had a fantastic time and appreciated the opportunity. We learnt about the history of farming and had a guided tour through the use of horses in farming to the current modern-day tractors we use today. The children asked lots of interesting questions. All children represented the school extremely well, showcasing Swinefleet’s core values - superb, Diamonds! Those who achieved the reading reward thoroughly enjoyed their treats - Gold enjoyed a bubble party with music - the children loved it. Please keep up with your reads as the final reading reward is definitely not one to be missed!
This week has been a busy start back, as we hurtle towards the summer holidays. We’ve been focusing on multiplication and statistics in maths and the Year 4s have now completed their multiplication checks - a huge well done to them. We are reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, focusing on inspiring vocabulary, meaning we can create our very own setting description for one of the fabulous rooms in Wonka’s factory. In Science, the topic is ‘Sound’, children will gain new knowledge and link back to previous learning in KS1. For our Geography lessons, we are working on location and place knowledge, including countries, regions and cities. The whole of KS2 collaborated together completing sporting activities during our black and white Hull FC day, preparing them for Sports Day next week!
Lots of exciting learning will continue throughout this half-term, alongside putting together our fabulous end of year KS2 production, which we cannot wait for.
Please continue to practise spellings at home, tests will continue every Friday. PE kits and appropriate footwear for sport should remain in school each week. Finally, please could we have a huge push on attendance this half-term, including being in school on time. As always, please contact us with any questions. Thanks so much for your continued support. The Diamonds team.
Sapphires
What a fabulous summer half term for the Sapphires. During reading lessons, the children were gripped by the story of The Explorer and from this they wrote suspenseful narratives on natural disasters and imaginative setting descriptions on the Amazon Rainforest.
In maths the Sapphires have enjoyed learning about shape and space; perimeter, area and volume as well as data handling.
To kickstart our marvellous Maja theme, the children tasted a range of Mexican foods – the chillies were an acquired taste! The Sapphires loved learning about Pok a Tok and enjoyed playing the game in the playground – without the human sacrificing at the end! They have also made stelae in the style of the Maja and evaluated Maja artwork. In history, the children have researched gods and goddesses, compared the lives of the rich and the poor and analysed Maja artefacts. How did the Maja civilisation end? This was an interesting lesson as the children evaluated various theories relating to this.
Special events last half term have included Earth Day where the children enjoyed discussing sustainable development goals and they created posters on recycle, reuse and recreate! Driffield Food and Farming Show was a wet yet memorable event for the children, reading reward (bubble party for gold!) and in the final week – it was party time as the Year 6s finished their SATS and the Sapphires earned 99% attendance.
This week, the children dressed in black and white for Hull FC Day and they spent a full afternoon completing sporting activities. The Sapphires had the opportunity to create a diorama of the rainforest. To round off the Maja history work, this week the Sapphires ordered the Maja achievements and discussed their thoughts on these. This half term, we have started a new book called the Wild Boy and the children are gathering ambitious vocabulary from the text in preparation for a character description piece of writing.
So much to look forward to this half term, dads to lunch, final reading reward, transition activities, the residential and the end of year production to name a few! Please keep sending reads on seesaw, practising spellings and coming to school everyday so we can get 100% attendance in Sapphires by the end of the year. Thank you for all your support, from the Sapphires team.

We would love to know what current and past parents of our Pearls think about our provision. What do we do well? What could we focus more on? Are their any changes that you think would support the children or you as families?
All responses can be anonymous so please let us know your thoughts. If you would prefer a paper copy then these are available already printed at the main entrance.
We are just commencing a project to further improve our Little Pearls provision and the Pearls including the outdoor area which we cannot wait to share when completed.
*We have now set aside some funds to replace our outdoor flooring and hope to get this work completed over summer *

As the weather hopefully warms up it may be that children need suncream. Please apply this before school but your child is welcome to bring some with them to reapply themselves. Children who are unable to apply suncream themselves, such as those in Pearls, should have this put on before school and staff can support them with reapplying as long as they are made aware of this.
Hats can be provided by school in hot weather and all children have access to a water bottle throughout the day.
Creating shade can be an issue for us but we do try to make areas using our school gazebos - if anyone is replacing theirs at home please consider donating to us as we always need more!
