Monthly Memo from Mrs. Herrick
NDSA Testing
Discovery Middle Schoolers will be taking the North Dakota State Assessment (NDSA) Testing on Wednesday, April 17th, and Thursday, April 18th, at Discovery Middle School.
The NDSA evaluates student performance against the state's academic standards in key subjects. Students in grades 3-8 and 10 will be assessed in English language arts/literacy, mathematics, and science.
Please see Mr. Reinke's Realm column in this newsletter for additional details. As educators and as parents/guardians, we know that there is so much more to a child and their success than what can be shown in a standardized assessment. However, we do want our students do their very best on these assessments. Please talk with your child about preparing for the test: having their PLDS charged up, having corded earbuds packed, getting a good night's sleep the night before the test, and having a good breakfast so they are ready to go for State Testing.
Oh The Places You'll Go! But...No More Parent/Guardian Requests for Memory Books to be Signed By Staff
Each grade level class has about 320 students, and during the course of middle school, our students have upwards of 20+ teaching staff, plus support staff, counselors, admin, coaches, advisors which equals up to a lot of contacts by the time your child leaves middle school. At DMS we will no longer accept requests for memory books or memory projects to be signed or completed by our staff. We understand this may be disappointing, but with the increase in volume of these requests in the past years and the additional responsiblity it puts on our office staff to ensure the books/projects all get signed and returned becomes too much. Also, we would feel terrible if it was lost, so therefore, these requests will no longer be honored. Thank you for your understanding.
Future Eagles Expo!
We are eager to welcome the incoming sixth grade students and their parents/guardians to DMS in anticipation of the 24-25 school year. On Thursday, April 18th we will be hosting the 5th-6th grade "Future Eagles Expo". Our families will receive a Blackboard message from their current elementary schools as well as a letter that details the evening.
5:00 pm – 6:00 pm Ed Clapp and Bennett students and parents/guardians
6:30 pm – 7:30 pm Eagles/Centennial/Other students and parents/guardians
The evening will begin with parents/guardians and students gathering in the auditorium to meet your future Discovery Administrators followed by an opportunity to walk around and become familiar with the different areas of the building. Our Future Eagles will have the opportunity to learn more about the variety of activities and athletics offered at Discovery as well as get pictures with the Eagles Mascot.
Students and parents/guardians will be encouraged to join our QR code scavenger hunt of the building with the opportunity to win some great Eagle swag door prizes.
The purpose of this meeting is to acquaint families and students with the school and hopefully ease the transition from elementary to Discovery. We have planned the presentation portion of the session to last about 25 minutes with the remainder of the time to explore the school.
The Scoop on Lunch Detention
When any type of "detention" is given as a consequence for not following the Guidelines for Success at DMS, students are clearly communicated to as well as parents/guardians. This may be one or both of the following to parents/guardians: a phone call and/or an email. This amongst many other things is why it is so important to keep your contact information in Powerschool current. If you haven't looked at Powerschool for awhile, please check it out and update any information that is not current.
We wanted to inform you that your child served lunch detention today due to not following the Guidelines for Success in the lunchroom at Discovery Middle School. Lunch detention occurs for a variety of reasons.
Some of the reasons are:
- Disruptive behavior during lunch
- Not sitting in assigned seats
- Throwing goods during lunch
- Other Violations of the Guidelines for Success
Lunch detention is held in one of two locations during the student's lunchtime. One location is in our Music Wing at assigned tables and the front office. While your child is in one of those locations, they are supervised by Discovery Staff while they eat quietly. Additionally, your child will reflect on the choices that placed them in lunch detention in hopes of reducing these kinds of unwanted behaviors.
If you have questions, don't hesitate to contact your child's administrator.

How We Empower Our Students on IEPs (Individualized Education Plans)
Our SPED casemangers have different ways of teaching our students about their disability category, their IEP and how to grow as self-advocates. In this particular classroom, a pre-post IEP quiz is given to students. Questions such as:
- What does IEP stand for?
- List 3 things that are in an IEP.
- What is a disability?

Next Early Out Day is Friday, April 19th, 2024
For the 2023-2024 school year, Fargo Public Schools (FPS) will implement four “early release” school days for students. On these days, students will be dismissed two hours early at each building. The early dismissal will allow our teaching staff to gather in an extended Professional Learning Community (PLC). Principals will send out specific building schedules.
During these early release days, our teachers will be focusing on analyzing student data, setting goals for student learning, and reviewing and planning research-based instructional strategies for students who need support and those who need enrichment. Teachers will collaborate with grade or content-level peers to review, reflect, and learn from each other in meeting students' needs.
We understand that early release days may cause some inconvenience for parents and guardians, but this is an important step towards improving our teaching practices and ultimately benefiting our students' learning outcomes. We appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

7th Grade Football (NEW)
Starting Fall 2024 all FPS middle schools will be offering 7th grade football! We are excited for our 7th graders to join the FM League and compete against Ben Franklin, Carl Ben Eielson, all 3 of the West Fargo middle schools, Horizon (Moorhead) middle school, and Sacred Heart middle school. We know other leagues have registration deadlines, so we wanted to get word out ASAP. Like all of our other 7th & 8th grade sports, 7th grade football will be affiliated with NDHSAA and follow their guidelines. This means that students can NOT participate in 2 different football leagues simultaneously. Coach Werremeyer, the Davies Head Football Coach, will be at Discovery this week on Thursday (4/11) right after school to help spread the word about this new and exciting opportunity. The meeting will be quick enough so students will still be able to ride the bus.
Remember, you can always check out the Discovery Activities Calendar to find updates and other events happening in the near future.
Eligibility Update for Semester 2:
All 3 FPS middle schools will be using the "projected letter grade" to determine eligibility. Specifically, if a student's projected letter grade is an "F," the teacher will adjust their overall course grade to a "U." In addition to this, teachers now have the option to consider one of our Guidelines for Success, specifically "Be Responsible," in determining the overall course grade. If a student is earning a “R” for “Be Responsible”, the teacher will change the overall course grade to a “U” – regardless of the “projected letter grade”. A student will earn an "R" (Rarely) in their Responsibility grade if they are completing and turning in less than half of their daily assignments.
If a student can show progress and get their "projected letter grade" and/or their "Be Responsible" grade up, they can regain their eligibility at that time. All 3 middle schools will be in alignment with this criteria.

Restorative Practices with Mrs. Tackling
Boundaries Part 2
Last month we looked at what boundaries are and why they are important for us. Now that you know why boundaries are important, here are steps you can take to create and hold personal boundaries:
- Self-awareness - Think about your values, needs, and priorities. Understand what is important to you and what makes you feel comfortable or uncomfortable.
- Define your boundaries - Clearly define your personal boundaries. This could include emotional, physical, and time boundaries. For example, you might let others know you don't like hugs, but you will accept a high five.
- Communicate assertively - Express your boundaries in a clear manner. Use "I" statements to avoid sounding confrontational. For example, say "I need some alone time to recharge: instead of "You always invade my space."
- Be consistent - Consistency is important; stick to your boundaries even when it is challenging.
- Seek support - Share your boundaries with trusted family, teachers, or counselors who can offer support and encouragement. Having a support system can make it easier to maintain your boundaries.
Creating and holding personal boundaries is an outgoing process. It requires self-awareness, communication, and a commitment to your well-being. It is not "rude" to have personal boundaries. Stick with them, and if you need support, find your counselor, a trusted adult, or schedule a restorative mediation with Ms. Tackling.

Summer is on its way, and it time to get outside! Many students have started to ride their bikes to school which is a great way to start the day! Mr. Reinke's Realm-NDSA
Hello Discovery Families!
We want to remind you that North Dakota State Assessment (NDSA) Testing is scheduled for Wednesday, April 17th, and Thursday, April 18th, at Discovery Middle School. This testing is mandatory for all students in grades 6-8.
The NDSA evaluates student performance against the state's academic standards in key subjects. Students in grades 3-8 and 10 will be assessed in English language arts/literacy, mathematics, and science.
Here's the testing schedule:
- Wednesday, April 17th: 6th-grade students will test during periods 1-3 and 5-8, while 7th & 8th-grade students will test during periods 1-4 and 6-8.
- Thursday, April 18th: 6th-grade students will test during periods 1-3, 7th-grade students during periods 1-4, and 8th-grade students during periods 1-4 and 6-8. 8th graders will take the Science portion of the NDSA, hence the extra testing periods.
We encourage all students to do their best during these tests, as the results will be reported to the state educational agency to evaluate our school's progress.
Please ensure that your student(s) bring corded earbuds/headphones to the testing sessions, which must be compatible with their school-issued computer. Cell phones, wireless earbuds, and smartwatches are not permitted in the classroom during testing. Please remind your student(s) to keep these items in their locker or at home on testing days.
If you have any questions about the upcoming NDSA testing, please feel free to contact Discovery Middle School at 701-446-3300 to speak with your child's counselor or a grade-level administrator.
Thank you for your cooperation and support! Go Eagles!
Mr. Ford's Focus - Guideline for Success - Be Responsible
Happy April, Discovery Families. This month I thought I’d touch on the Guideline for Success – Be Responsible. Middle school is a pivotal time when children start to gain more independence and face increasingly complex challenges. Learning responsibility equips them with the skills needed to navigate these challenges successfully.
Teaching responsibility to middle school kids instills a sense of accountability for their actions, fosters self-discipline, and promotes good decision-making. It prepares them for the academic demands ahead and lays the foundation for success in high school and beyond. When students demonstrate responsibility, they earn the trust and respect of their peers, teachers, and administrators. This creates a positive learning environment where everyone feels valued and supported, fostering a culture of trust and respect in our school community.
Teaching responsibility also nurtures essential life skills such as time management, organization, and teamwork, which are essential for personal and academic growth. This allows students to develop positive habits and assists with reducing anxiety.
As parents, your role in nurturing responsibility in your children is paramount. By setting clear expectations, providing guidance and support, and holding them accountable for their actions, you play a crucial role in shaping their character and preparing them for the challenges that lie ahead. This may involve helping your child develop a routine that sets aside for academics or checking Powerschool regularly to see if there are any missing assignments.
Together, let's empower our students to become responsible, conscientious individuals who are ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges of the future. By emphasizing responsibility, we empower our students to become confident, capable individuals who are prepared to take on the responsibilities of adulthood with grace and resilience.
Thank you for your partnership in nurturing responsible young adults.

Liz’s Closet
A Discreet, Free Resource for Discovery Students in Need
What: Discovery strives as a team to meet the needs of all students as part of our mission to build a foundation for success. Liz’s Closet, a free resource at Discovery, aligns with this mission by providing students in need with items such as clothing, hygiene products, non-perishable food items, etc.
At Discovery, we hope to provide developmentally appropriate support to students in need by offering a means to obtain basic food and hygiene products in a discreet manner. Students utilizing Liz’s Closet will have access to reusable bags, so items are less visible as students are leaving the building.
Where: Liz’s Closet will be located in Student Services. The room being used as “Liz’s Closet” will be accessible through a trusted adult in the building (teachers, counselors, administrators, paraprofessionals, designated staff).
Who: Any student in need of these items is welcome to take what he/she needs with the help of a trusted adult.
How: Although students are welcome to directly ask a trusted adult at Discovery to use Liz’s Closet, to maintain privacy as best as possible, a student can simply draw a star on a sheet of paper and bring it to a trusted adult. The adult will then instruct the student as to when he/she can go to Student Services to collect what is needed. If this adult does not have a time that works for him/her, the adult will notify the appropriate counselor or Student Services staff member to be expecting this student sometime within the school day. Once in Student Services, the student will be escorted to the closet and can take what is needed.
If you know of anyone who may need to utilize this resource, please do not hesitate to contact a Discovery counselor or administrator. Additionally, if you would like to donate shelf-stable food, school supplies, or hygiene products to Liz’s Closet, please contact Taylor Ferderer (school counselor) at 446-3318.
