Principal's Message
Dear Angell Community,
Our biggest fundraiser of the year is this Friday. Our PTA has worked hard to organize our annual Fun Run. For all of our new families, the Fun Run is an all inclusive event to encourage our students and the Angell community to work together to do something magical. This is also a great way to connect teamwork, fitness, and fundraising into one big event. There are many ways for families and community members to get involved. Our PTA has special opportunities if you and your family would like to do more. Families can purchase shout outs or would like an opportunity to run with your child. The PTA can also use help the day of the event (please make sure you are an approved volunteer). You are also welcome to help fundraise by registering your child and making donations. All of this can be accessed through the links connected below in specific buttons. Our PTA has also provided an infographic to share more details. Although this is designed as a fundraiser students and families do not need to contribute to participate. Everyone will be a part of the festivities.
The Fun Run will begin as close to 1:30 pm and will last about an hour. Students will return to their classrooms after the event and be dismissed at 3:15 pm. If you are coming to watch or volunteer it is not necessary to check in at the office. Please look for the check in table by the Main Entrance near the flagpole. We look forward to celebrating a wonderful afternoon with all of you. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our PTA or reach out to me directly.
I also wanted to provide you an update from Fall Fest. Many students won lunch with a staff member. Please be advised our plan is to host lunches with staff members on Thursday, October 17th. Students will bring their lunches (either from home or from school) and meet our teachers in their rooms for lunch. Our staff will handle all the details to ensure each student who won a lunch gets connected with the correct staff member. If for some reason your child won and cannot be in school that day please reach out to us so we can make alternative arrangements. It is possible that a staff member might be absent. In that case we will set up another time for the lunch.
I also wanted to share a special message from Nurse Rose:
There is a district wide flu/covid vaccine clinic that is being held on Thursday, October 10th, 3:30p-6:00p at Anderson Middle School in the Cafeteria. Anyone six months and older is welcome to sign up and come. Bloom pediatrics are the providers, and they will be administering the vaccines. Please use the link button below to access the signup.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and see you on Monday.

Counselor's Corner
We’d like to thank you for taking the time to complete our questionnaire last month. The message was clear, we’d all like to learn more about emotion regulation, anxiety, peer relationships, and conflict resolution. Here you can see our slideshow from the October PTA meeting. This week we were eager to talk more about emotion regulation, which is the ability to manage emotions to control behavior, complete tasks, or achieve goals. This looks different for children of different ages so we broke it down to see what realistic expectations may look like and understand that some days are easier than others. As parents, we are our children’s first teachers and this continues as they learn better emotion regulation skills. When we are calm and can validate our children’s experiences, we take the first big step to moving through the challenges they face. We do not need to agree with them in order to notice, acknowledge, and witness what they feel. At the same time, we do not need to change or take control over their experiences. We would love to minimize our children’s discomfort, yet by teaching them to work through it we build resilience and skills for future problem solving.
During the pandemic our children enjoyed a lot of screen time. Even now, some of their favorite activities may be video games, watching TV, or playing on a tablet. It’s interesting to note that a University of Michigan study published before the pandemic showed that using mobile devices to calm/settle behavior/emotions can be linked to worse behavior challenges later in life. These results are higher in boys and children who are predisposed to hyperactivity and it removes opportunities for children to learn how to use coping strategies. So how do we help? At school we refer to many different strategies to help when we have big feelings, from breathing techniques such as square breathing, to a warm hug, or some quiet time listening to music. We know different things work at different times and the same strategy might not work every time. Ask your child for some of their favorites!
As we head into the long weekend, we wish a sweet New Year to everyone celebrating Rosh Hashanah and moments of quality time together for all our Angell families.
Respect Circle Honorees
Congratulations to our students honored at Respect Circle for being Kind, Safe and Productive on Tuesday, October 1st.
Volunteer Release Form
Parents are encouraged to volunteer in classrooms, chaperone field trips, and be a volunteer driver. In order to volunteer in the classroom or on school-sponsored functions, all parents or guardians must complete the Volunteer Release Form and be approved through the district process prior to any activities. Please allow up to 2 weeks for processing.
New this year - Volunteer forms will be completed online (see button below). There is an option to fill out the Chaperone Section within the online Volunteer form. Driver forms must be completed using the usual paper copy format. Remember to submit a copy of your current driver's license and proof of insurance with ALL Driver Forms even if you submitted your driver's license online.
Volunteer forms must be completed every year. If you were an approved volunteer last year, you still must complete the process again for the 2024-2025 school year.

PTA Reflections Contest
WHAT IS REFLECTIONS?
The Reflections program is the National PTA’s cornerstone art program. It was founded in 1969 and since its founding, millions of students have participated in the program. The goal of the program is participation in and appreciation for the arts. The Reflections program provides students with an opportunity to express themselves creatively and receive positive recognition for original works of art.
HERE’S HOW REFLECTIONS WORKS
Students like you make projects that are inspired by a theme. This year’s theme is “Accepting Imperfection.” You can make a project in as many of the categories as you want to. (It’s free to enter!) This is a national competition. We will judge all entries from Berkley Schools. We choose up to four winners in each age range and category. Then we send those winners on to be judged at the state level. Top winners at the state level go on to national judging.
GENERAL RULES
If you are interested in participating in Reflections, it is important to follow all of the rules. Here are some of the general rules:
Only new pieces of artwork inspired by the theme may be submitted.
Students may only submit one entry per category.
Each entry may only be submitted by one student. For example, if your friends appear in your entry (like for film production or dance choreography), only the person who is responsible for creating the concept and leading the project can enter their name on the entry form.
The work must be your own. Parents or other grown-ups may not help. (Exceptions apply for the Accessible Arts division.)
To keep the judging anonymous, you may not include your full name on the work. That means no signatures on your visual arts piece and no full name written or spoken in your other pieces.
Use of copyrighted material is prohibited, except for background music in dance choreography and specific exceptions in visual arts entries. See category guidelines for details.
Digital technology and/or software can be used to develop, enhance and/or present an entry but may not provide the primary design and/or concept.
You must submit an entry form for each entry. This form will include your artist statement, which tells the judges how your project fits with the theme of “Accepting Imperfection.”
You must include a consent form for any person whose face or voice is included in your entry.
WRITING YOUR ARTIST STATEMENT
Your artist statement is important, so give it some thought. It must be between 10 and 100 words and must describe what your work is and how it relates to the theme. But how do you do that? You could tell us how you got the idea for the project or what “Accepting Imperfection” means to you. Be as clear as you can. Your artist statement is an important part of the judging. But make sure they are your words – not your grown-up’s.

GRADE DIVISIONS
When you fill out the entry form, mark your grade. Judging grade categories are:

Intermediate: Grades 3-5
Middle School: Grades 6-8
High School: Grades 9-12
Accessible Arts: Grades (Students who identify as having a disability and may receive services under IDEA or ADA: Section 504 may enter in the Special Artist Division. See official rules.)
