Food Service Updates for 2022-2023
EFFECTIVE October 1, 2022 - BREAKFAST ONLY
On Friday, September 9, 2022, Governor Tom Wolf announced that Pennsylvania will make it possible for all schools participating in the School Breakfast Program (SBP) to provide free breakfasts for all enrolled students during the 2022-23 school year, beginning with breakfast meals served October 1, 2022.
BREAKFAST (AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 30, 2022) AND LUNCH INFORMATION
FOR 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR
For 2022-2023, students will be required to pay for breakfast and/or lunch daily, unless they qualify under the free/reduced meal application process. We strongly encourage families to complete the free/reduced meal application so it does not impact any current or future benefits that you are receiving. Families can apply online at Online Free/Reduced Meal Application, https://www.compass.state.pa.us, or for a printed copy please visit: Free/Reduced Meal Application (English) or Free/Reduced Meal Application (Spanish). Please contact your local building for a printed copy, if needed. If students wish to purchase additional items during breakfast or lunch, they must have the funds available to purchase.
If a student’s cafeteria account has a negative balance, the student will be offered a standard breakfast or lunch, as defined by the National School Lunch/Breakfast Program (NSLP, SBP). No charges will be allowed for extra items, such as a-la-carte options, drinks, or second meals.
All foods available in district schools during the school day will be offered to students with consideration for promoting student health and reducing childhood obesity. Foods provided through the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs will comply with federal nutrition standards under the School Meals Initiative. All competitive foods and beverages available to students in district schools during the school day will comply with the Nutritional Standards for Competitive Foods in Pennsylvania Schools.
The cafeteria operates under strict state and federal regulations governing the preparation and serving of foods. Menus for each building are available at:
https://upperadams.nutrislice.com/.
Note: Chartwells may experience difficulty in purchasing food items or receiving partially filled items from the shortages in manufacturing. Chartwells may need to change the menu to reflect items that are available for purchase. Our goal remains the same: to serve delicious and nutritious meals to all students every day.
Account Balance Information
MYSCHOOLBUCKS.COM: The Upper Adams School District is pleased to offer an online option for families to pay for student lunches. Our Food Service Department accepts payments for school meals through MySchoolBucks.com – an online payment service. MySchoolBucks.com offers a secure transaction gateway that accepts all major credit cards/debit cards as a means of adding money to your child’s meal account. Note: there is a service fee to use this service.
(IMPORTANT: The District participated with MySchoolBucks.com to provide parents/guardians the opportunity to view their child’s account 24/7. Setting up and viewing the account is free. Making a payment to their account online is optional)
If a payment by personal check is returned to the School District, marked “Non-Sufficient Funds” (NSF), the School District will reverse the credit to the student’s account in the amount of the original check. A $25.00 fee will be assessed for NSF checks returned to the School District. This may result in a negative balance in the account and the procedures listed below will be followed for charging meals and paying the overdue balance.
Negative Balance Information
If your student has a negative balance, please pay the outstanding balance prior to the end of the school year. Payment may be made using MySchoolBucks, https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/login/getlogin or by sending a check in with your student to be applied to their account.
The initial collection of negative balances will be communicated to the parents/guardians by the 15th of every month. If at the end of the school year, June 1, 2023, the student continues to have a negative balance, the negative balance may be referred to a collection agency.
Effective for the 2022-2023 school year, any year-end negative balances will be sent to collections. If you should have questions, please contact Ms. Cless at 717-677-7191 ext. 2740 or k.cless@upperadams.org

Technology Department Update
Mr. Joshua Cantrell
Mr. Peter Freitas
Upper Adams School District Welcomes Two New
Technology Department Team Members
In August, 2022, the Upper Adams School District Board of School Directors approved a partnership with Global Data Consultants (GDC) in Chambersburg, PA to provide technology support. Former Director of Technology, Mr. Jim VanDyke, served the Upper Adams School District for 29 years as a classroom teacher and technology leader before retiring in June, 2022. To provide the Upper Adams School District with a cost effective and resource-rich alternative, the Board of School Directors chose to partner with Global Data Consultants (GDC) to help meet the technology needs of the Upper Adams School District.
Mr. Joshua Cantrell joined the Upper Adams School District as the Director of Technology. Mr. Cantrell comes to the school district with over ten years of experience in the world of Information Technology (IT). Hailing from the Mont Alto area with his wife and son, Mr. Cantrell was instrumental in helping our students have a successful start of the school year. From provisioning and distributing new computers to students to addressing any day–to–day concerns with printers and application accessibility, Mr. Cantrell has quickly become a respected member and leader in the Upper Adams School District.
Mr. Peter Freitas joined the Upper Adams School District as a Technology Systems Specialist. Originally from the state of California, Mr. Freitas is currently living in Carlisle with his wife and daughter. Their family is growing as they are expecting a son to arrive in December. Mr. Freitas comes to us with six years of Information Technology (IT) experience. In his short time with us, Mr. Freitas has assisted with the set-up of student laptops, addressed individual student and staff concerns with applications and general accessibility, and approaches each day with the goal of how he can make the computer user experience more successful and productive at the Upper Adams School District.
Mr. Anthony Hurkala and Mrs. Rita Lai continue to maintain student and staff digital accessibility and meet the ongoing needs with technology at the Upper Adams Intermediate School and Biglerville Elementary School. During the transition to Global Data Consultants (GDC) this summer, Mr. Hurkala and Mrs. Lai were essential in keeping our technology across the school district moving forward and addressing the various digital needs over the summer. The Upper Adams School District owes these two employees a debt of gratitude for all their dedication and perseverance during the summer months to keep digital assets working and maintained. We are extremely fortunate to have Mr. Hurkala and Mrs. Lai as part of our Canner Family.
An extended welcome to the newest members of the Upper Adams School District Technology Family. We are glad you are here!
Canner Curriculum Corner
It is hard to believe summer has come to a close and we are once again embarking on another school year. During the summer months, the Pennsylvania Department of Education completed an approval process for the new science standards. The previous science standards currently guiding our curriculum in this content area were from 2002. This was a much anticipated and exciting development from the State and school districts are ready to begin the hard work of integrating these new standards in our curriculum.
The revised Pennsylvania Science Standards encompass science, technology, engineering, the environment and ecology, establishing the skills and understanding that students will develop in K-12 schools across the commonwealth. Pennsylvania’s Science Standards serve as the basis for locally determined curriculum development and instruction in schools. The current science standards include two (2) sets related to science: Science and Technology, and Environment and Ecology. Both sets of standards took effect January 5, 2002, and the new Pennsylvania Science Standards are the first update since they were adopted.
The new standards will replace the previous ones with three (3) sets of standards:
· Pennsylvania Integrated Standards for Science, Environment, Ecology, Technology and Engineering (Grades K-5)
· Pennsylvania Integrated Standards for Science, Environment and Ecology (Grades 6-12)
· Pennsylvania Technology and Engineering Standards (Grades 6-12)
The new Pennsylvania Science Standards will support our teachers, students, and school communities using transparent, updated language, that enables high–quality learning in an ever– changing world. The Upper Adams School District teachers will be reviewing the new Pennsylvania Science Standards during professional development days and begin the curriculum revision process, which will continue over the next three (3) years.
Pennsylvania has communicated to school districts a goal for implementation of the new Pennsylvania Science Standards by the 2025–2026 school year. The 2025–2026 school year will also be the first year which a new Pennsylvania Science PSSA will be administered to students to assess the newly implemented Pennsylvania Science Standards.

2021-2022 Unger-Stock Teacher of Excellence Award Winners
The Unger/Stock Outstanding Teacher Award has been made possible by the generous donation of Colonel Guinn E. Unger. Through a charitable trust established by Col. Unger and the late Mrs. Phyllis E. Unger, the Upper Adams School District has been able to perpetuate the long-standing tradition of recognizing outstanding teachers. Col. Unger, a 1943 graduate of Biglerville High School, realizes the importance high-quality teachers played in his life and the lives of his children. In 1995, Colonel Unger encouraged the Upper Adams School District to institute the Guinn E. Unger Innovative Teaching Practices Award. This award, presented to one secondary and one elementary teacher each year, recognized the efforts to institute innovative teaching practices into the classroom.
Colonel Unger was a student of the late L.V. Stock, who was a teacher and administrator in the Upper Adams School District from 1923 through 1957. In 1985, the L. V. Stock Teacher of Excellence Award was formed through the generous contribution of Verna O. Stock, in honor of her late husband, Leslie V. Stock. After nearly twenty years of honoring distinction in teaching through the L.V. Stock Teacher of Excellence Award, the tradition came close to extinction due to dwindling funds. When faced with the possibility of losing the tie between the L.V. Stock name and teacher excellence, Colonel Unger agreed to support the initiation of a new award, combining the components of both the former L.V. Stock and Guinn E. Unger awards. Thus, in 2005, the Unger/Stock Outstanding Teacher Award was conceived.
