Message From Principal Engdall
Fall Greetings Shaw Montessori Community!
As you know our district has been monitoring COVID-19 data benchmarks released by the Maricopa County Department of Public Health. In all, the district’s data continues to trend in the right direction for the zip codes we serve however, we still have a zip code or two that is red.
Districts must see a decline in the number of cases for two consecutive weeks, a percent positivity rate below 7%, and a moderate to minimal community spread in order to move to an in-person learning model.
At the governing board meeting held this past Thursday evening, the members voted to keep our schools closed through November 9th to in-person learning based on our metrics.
During this period of waiting, our staff continues to strategize how best to use our rich resources for a campus return. Creative considerations from how we can do a lot more outside learning and dining to how to incorporate our beautiful manipulatives for safe usage are just a few. We look forward to sharing our plans when the time comes.
I want to reiterate how much the staff appreciates your support, your suggestions and your genuine appreciation of the work they are doing to support our learners on line. Any teacher will tell you, this model takes double, sometimes triple the planning time to implement.
This community is such an incredibly special place because of you and your genuine love and desire to make Shaw be an incredible learning experience for our children. I sincerely thank you for your continued patience and support. We truly miss all of our humans, large, medium and small.
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

Communicating while wearing a mask
As we navigate through the pandemic, mask-wearing has become mandatory, both for our safety and for the safety of those around us. Masks create a challenge for communication because, in addition to muffling our voices, they block much of our facial expressions.
We rely on facial expressions to interpret greetings, communication, and to connect with others.
Here are some tips for successful communication while wearing a mask.
1. Get the other person’s attention by saying their name or gesturing to them
2. Make eye contact and face the person to whom you are speaking
3. Try to hold the conversation in a quieter environment
4. Speak in a normal tone of voice, but, slow the rate down
5. Use shorter phrases and everyday words
6. Watch the other person’ body language and the facial expressions you can see (eyes, eyebrows, forehead)
7. Use your body, head, and hand gestures to communicate.
8. If necessary revert to an alternative way of communicating (texting, writing, pointing)
Be patient with yourself and others. We will get through this.
