Since 1990, the U.S. government has designated the month of May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, celebrating the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the United States. The month of May was chosen to mark the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant to the United States on May 7, 1843, as well as the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869.
The term “Asian American” was coined in 1968 by student activists Emma Gee and Yuji Ichioka, as a unifying political identity for different groups of people of Asian descent.
Asian Americans - The history of identity, contributions, and challenges experience by Asian Americans
Asian Americans is a five-hour film series that delivers a bold, fresh perspective on a history that matters today, more than ever. As America becomes more diverse, and more divided while facing unimaginable challenges, how do we move forward together? Told through intimate personal stories, the series will cast a new lens on U.S. history and the ongoing role that Asian Americans have played. #AsianAmericans
Jason Magabo Perez, San Diego Poet Laureate 2023-2024
Born in Detroit, the son of Filipino immigrants, he spent his teen years in Oceanside and went to UC San Diego, where he started out as a math major. A difficult upper-division class in that field convinced him to look elsewhere. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science.
Jason Magabo Perez blends poetry, prose, performance, film/video, ethnography, and oral history to explore Filipino American histories, colonialism, state violence, migration, memory, and intimacy. Read more about this poet here.
