Teacher of the Year!
Dave Clauson has been named the 2024-25 Regional Teacher of the Year. The news was shared in a surprise announcement during the high school’s all-school Welcome Back assembly this morning.
Mr. Clauson, who is an Engineering & Aerospace Sciences Pathway teacher, was awarded $1,000 by the Oregon Lottery and is now in the running for the statewide Oregon Teacher of the Year prize. He is well known to students across the district for his work with the Science Experiences' third-grade robotics program.

New School Board Member
By unanimous vote, Christine Bader was appointed to the McMinnville School Board last night, Monday, Sept. 9. She fills the position vacated by Carson Benner last month, who has held the position 3 at-large position since 2016.
Bader was one of six candidates who applied for the position, and one of three finalists interviewed by the board at the August 26 Work Session. She is an adjunct business professor at Linfield University and the head coach of the Valley Panthers girls rugby club. She has a son and daughter in the district.
After being sworn in, Bader assumed the position immediately. She will serve out Benner’s term, which ends June 30, 2025. Her appointment marks the first time that the majority of MSD’s board positions have been held by women.
GrizzFest is Next Wednesday
The high school’s version of Back-to-School night is next Wednesday, Sept. 18 running from 6:30 - 8 p.m. in Wortman Stadium.
The evening features a variety of activities and resources planned to help families learn about programs at the school, meet their students’ teachers and watch student performances. Families can also get tours of the school beginning at 6 p.m.
The evening kicks off with free dinner and various food trucks will also have items for purchase.

September is Suicide Prevention Month
Mental health issues and suicide risk among youth are at critically high levels, according to research conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administraion (SAMHSA).
To recognize warning signs and get help, check out these resources from SAMHSA. You can also call or text 988 to connect with a caring counselor who can provide support 24/7.
Cooking and Learning
Students in Mac High's “Advanced Foods” are already cooking up fun recipes like mini quiches (pictured) and Creamy Cajun Pasta. Once the cooking is done, they sample and share their creations!

“See Something, Say Something”
MSD partners with Safe Oregon, a program created for students, parents, school staff, community members and law enforcement officers to report and respond to school threats, weapons, violence, drugs, self-harm or other safety concerns.

Hispanic Heritage Month
The McMinnville Public Library is hosting a reading event for teens and above to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
Participants read a book by a Hispanic or Latinx author and are entered to win a gift certificate to a local Hispanic restaurant. Find details under your (middle/high) school’s Peachjar button!
Read to a Dog!
If your child is a reluctant reader, reading aloud to a patient, attentive doggy might be just the thing to make reading aloud fun.
The McMinnville Library hosts reading sessions every third Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Register at the children’s desk (or call 503.535.5559) to register to ensure dog availability. Find details on your (elementary) school’s Peachjar button.
