Computer Science Education Week
Instructional Technology and Library Services, a part of Technology Services along with the Nashville Technology Council would like to invite you and your students to participate in the 2021 Computer Science Week. The CSEdWeek theme this year highlights the impact that computer science is making everywhere and the relationship that computer science has with different subjects, industries, career paths, and our everyday lives.
When: Monday, December 6th- Friday, December 10th
What: Computer Science Education Week is an annual call to action to inspire K-12 students to learn Computer Science, advocate for equity, and celebrate the contributions of students, educators, and partners to the field.
Where: Activities that can be facilitated in your classroom have been included in the Computer Science Education Week Sway. These activities include opportunities for you and your students to engage with community members that work in the field of Computer Science.
Why: Computer Science is everywhere! In Tennessee, there are currently 8,792 open computing jobs with an average salary of 79,220. Yet there were only 794 graduates in computer science in 2018. Check out the video Computer Science is Changing Everything to see how computer science has such an impact on different careers.
How: Throughout the week, teachers will work with their students and community members to provide experiential learning opportunities that highlight how each of us is impacted by Computer Science each day. As a part of this experience, students can also create a Flipgrid video that explains what they have learned and show examples of how Computer Science is Everywhere. Note: Middle and High School Students can submit an individual response. All submissions will be moderated. Refer to the MNPS print and digital policy for guidance regarding students who have opted out of the use of photos, videos, and audio clips.
Guiding Question for Teachers: How can we provide experiential learning opportunities to engage all learners around the theme of Computer Science Everywhere during Computer Science Week?

Latinx Kidlit Book Festival FREE Dec 9-10th
The Latinx Kidlit Book Festival needs help letting schools and libraries know about our FREE, virtual Dec 9-10th festival and all the free content we are offering for educators and students. See this announcement for more information.
Here are links to our graphics for IG, Twitter, FB as well as posters that can be printed out and hung in schools and libraries.
More about the LKBF: Sessions are geared toward all schools, educators, students and book lovers, not just those identifying as Latinx. We designed the LKBF to serve as a virtual field trip for teachers and librarians, many of whom are still facing challenges due to the pandemic. Content will be available for students preK-12th grade and beyond!
Festival panels have been created in collaboration with teachers and educators, including members of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Latinx Caucus. This year, in addition to our regular panels featuring PB, MG, YA, Graphic novel and poetry authors and illustrators, we will offer sessions about the CRAFT of writing and illustrating kidlit books. We will offer content in Spanish, perfect for ESL as well as Spanish language classrooms. We also have a special career-day panel with editors and agents who will introduce students to jobs in the book-making business.
Programming is meant to educate, entertain, and be a resource for schools, teachers, and librarians across the globe.
How to Watch: The festival will be streamed live on the Latinx Kidlit Book Festival YouTube channel on December 9-10, 2021. Sessions may be safely streamed into classrooms worldwide, and shared with students using an educator’s account. A live-chat option will allow students to engage with LKBF authors and illustrators. All content will be recorded and available even after the live festival concludes. A hearing impaired option will also be available.
Educator resources: We have numerous educator resources on our website right now including author/illustrator Flipgrid videos, craft video mini-lessons, educator guides, and a Latinx Kidlit book database searchable by age-range, theme, country of origin, etc for that educator who is looking for the perfect book for a specific student. We also will host a special educator-only session on Wed, Dec 8th in collaboration with NCTE and Disrupt Text's Lorena Germán, the purpose of which is to discuss ways to incorporate diverse books into classrooms and libraries.
Free Writing Workshop Materials
*If you have questions about the audience for this, please reach out to her.
I will offer a FREE writing workshop for Picture Book Creators on Dr. King's Birthday (17 January 2022).
My plan is to help Un-Published Picture Book Writers refine manuscripts and
access editors to champion their work. So many wise writers helped me pursue a publishing career. This free event is my attempt to cancel the debt.
I call my workshop the AESOP WRITERS because we are striving to write "Classic Literature for a New Generation."
Share this registration code and website (www.aesopwriters.com) with writers and writing organizations in your circle of influence.
Creatives can also follow the workshop on Twitter @AesopWriters.
Like Aesop's famous Tortoise--writers are patient, determined
and poised to WIN.
This is the year to publish your picture book.
Write ON.
