Parting Words from Officer Holms . . .
"CMS is a very special place. I can't bring up all the names of everyone who has been special to me since 2010. I really learned what it is to be a police officer. Students and their families would see me walking in the mall or at a fair like the Oyster Festival. I always walk with a partner, and my partners don't like walking with me because I'm stopped every 10 feet or so to speak with families, kids or graduates asking me about my family and I ask them about theirs. We know everything about each other.
"This is how that happens. . . if you reach 38 years as a police officer and people aren't coming up to you and asking about your family, you didn't do it right. Thank you all for allowing me to do it right.
" Before I go, there is a Police Code 67. It means 'Officer Needs Assistance'. When my family needed assistance, CMS was there. Thank you!""

CARVER SCHOLARS PROGRAM 2024/25
CMS Families in Grades 5-8,
It’s that time of year when we are beginning to plan for our next year’s Carver Scholars programming. The good news is that we are funded for another year! This program is available to students in grades 5-8 and is free of charge!
With the high interest in our program, we will be looking at a lottery system for our roster for next year. If you are selected, we are asking that parents and students fully understand what the program is and agree to our contract and its terms.
The program runs Monday-Thursday from 3:30-6:00. There is no program on early dismissal days. We are hopeful to provide transportation via bus for those who want/need it.
If your child is interested, please read the following information to ensure our program is a good fit.
- Attendance
The Carver Scholar program is not free child care. We have academic expectations for our students as well as enrichment opportunities. Students must commit to attend a minimum of 3 out of the 4 days a week, and stay for the full afternoon. (Pick up at 4:15 is not a full day). If the attendance remains low, you will be asked to leave the program to allow for another student to join.
- Behavior
We have a behavior contract with our expectations of how students are to conduct themselves daily. We will not tolerate disrespect of any kind, non-compliance, bullying, foul language or any type of negative behavior. Parents and students will both be asked to sign this contract. If any student has 3 or more violations of the contract, they will be expelled from the program permanently.
- Academics
The Carver Scholars mission is rooted in academic progress and success. Homework help will be provided as well as additional academic support in core subjects. Students in this program must be willing to give their best effort to assignments presented to them- all with the goal of improving their overall academic promise.
- Citizenship.
The Carver Scholars program is helping to build model citizens of the future. This encompasses community service and discussions about how we can make the school, our town and the world a better place!
- Enrichment
The program is full of enrichment opportunities and a lot of fun! We have had soccer clinics, art residence, hip hop dance, yoga, coding, robotics, floor hockey, arts & crafts and cooking to name a few! We have had off site field trips and we always have a good time.
If you are interested, you can fill out the google form:
We will also post a PDF copy of the letter and form that you can download and print on ParentSquare.
We are hoping to get an idea of interested students before the end of the year! If interested, please let us know by June 14th. Any clarifying questions- send to Wanda McGahern, mcgahernw@norwalkps.org.
Thank you!

CMS Parent Groups on Facebook
Our two parent groups on Facebook, "CMS Parents Group" and "CMS - en Espanol Group," are private groups open only to members of the CMS community (parents and staff). We ask you to answer a few questions before being approved for membership to ensure our sites remain private. This way we can comfortably live stream All School Meetings and share photos of school/class activities, field trips and PTA events. We welcome your participation, but please remember to fill out the membership questions. Thank you.
"Concord Magnet School K-8" is our public page.
"CMS Parents Group" is a closed group open only to CMS parents and staff.
"CMS - en Espanol Group" is for our Spanish-speaking parents.
