Weekly Updates
Dear Hózhó Families,
Read-a-thon - It's time to read and earn money for our school! Does your child love field trips?
This year we have set up field trips for all of our grade levels. Students have been to some amazing places and have had some incredible experiences already! We also have more field trips planned for the spring, but we need to fund these upcoming events. Every little bit helps. If every student could secure a $25 donation after today, the school would earn another $15,000! This would be very helpful! As of today, only about 1/3 of the students are participating. Please consider sending your child's readathon link to a grandparent, aunt, uncle or family friend to see if we could increase our schoolwide participation.
The more students raise, and the more they read, the more prizes they can earn. Students can read and earn donations until the end of spring break. Thank you for your support!
If you have questions, please contact our front office at (505) 722-8922.

Art Show Winners
The first-place winner is Matthias Chavez (5th grade)!
Second place goes to Karla Detwiler (6th grade).
Third place goes to Cooper Hamilton (3rd grade), who was unable to attend the show (hence no picture of him).
There were three honorable mentions: Bonnie Carpenter (4th grade), Yondiin Houston (8th grade) and Adri Garcia (4th grade).
There were 15 art works that sold! 100% of the money goes directly to the young artists. It was great show and a whole lot of fun for everyone who showed up!

Fifth Grade: Empathy and Kindness
Your child is learning how to use empathy to help make their school community a better place. For example, they might make a plan to keep the school grounds clean or to help younger students safely use playground equipment. Fifth graders practice using empathy—feeling or understanding what someone else is feeling—as a way to identify potential problems and propose solutions that could work for everyone.
Why is it important? Research shows that children who learn the skills in this unit are more likely to:
Build stronger relationships
Resolve conflicts more effectively
Exhibit positive behaviors
Be more connected and compassionate
Develop increased empathy
Practice at Home
Notice and praise your child when they describe a problem from someone else’s point of view. For example, your fifth grader might say, “There’s a new student in our class. I noticed she didn’t have anyone to play with at recess. I kind of felt bad for her.” You can say, “I can tell you’re really thinking about her point of view. It’s nice to hear that you’re trying to understand how she feels.”
Discuss: Ask your child, “If you could change anything about your school, what would it be and why?” Take turns talking about how different groups of people—such as teachers, younger students, older students, and parents—might be affected by the change.
Practice: When you’re in a place such as a grocery store, community center, or park, ask your child to notice the different groups of people using the space. For example, you may see older people and young children, workers, or first-time visitors. Help your child think about what those groups might be experiencing. For example, “We’re seeing some older people in the store. Can they easily do what they need to do? Are they safe? Can they enjoy themselves?”
