The Prowler
Week of March 24-28, 2025
From Mr. Moreno's Desk:
Teachers, Staff, Parents, and Students,
This week marks the third week of the fifth six-week grading period, and as we approach the end of this period, progress reports will be distributed next week. We strongly encourage you to not only review your child's progress report but also take note of their upcoming report card. According to our grading policy, students who do not pass either Reading or Math for the year will face retention. Since RHMS does not offer summer school for promotion, it is crucial for both parents and teachers to maintain open lines of communication to ensure the success of all our students.
This past week also marked the start of our Saturday Academies, and we have four more sessions scheduled. Saturday Academies are designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to excel on the upcoming STAAR assessments. These sessions are an excellent opportunity for students to receive additional academic support, and we are committed to working together to provide the resources, guidance, and encouragement each student needs to perform at their best.
Saturday Academies are held from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with breakfast served from 7:30 AM to 7:55 AM, and lunch served from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM. Transportation is available for those who need it. The remaining Saturday Academy dates are as follows:
-
Saturday, March 29, 2025
-
Saturday, April 5, 2025
-
Saturday, April 12, 2025
-
Saturday, April 26, 2025
We also want to take this opportunity to emphasize the importance of consistent daily attendance for all students. Regular attendance is critical for ensuring academic success and personal growth. Being present each day allows students to fully engage with the lessons and experiences that are essential to their development. As part of our ongoing commitment to excellence, we are striving for a school-wide attendance rate of at least 96% for the remainder of the year. Achieving this goal will require the continued support and collaboration of our entire school community.
We are deeply grateful for the efforts that parents are making to ensure their children attend school regularly. Your involvement and dedication play a vital role in our students’ success, and we appreciate all that you do. Together, we can provide our students with the best possible opportunities for growth and achievement. Thank you for being such an integral part of this effort—your continued support is key to helping our students reach their full potential.

RHMS Student Leadership Mentoring Program
This week, our 7th grade RHMS Student Mentors had the exciting opportunity to meet with some of their assigned mentees during their lunch period. This time is invaluable as it allows the mentors to establish meaningful connections and build rapport with their mentees. The mentors engage in a variety of conversations, discussing important topics like attendance, grades, and schoolwork, as well as getting to know their mentees' hobbies, interests, and personal experiences. These conversations foster trust and understanding, creating a supportive environment where the mentees feel comfortable sharing. Meanwhile, the fifth grade students are eagerly anticipating their next mentoring session, excited about the chance to connect and learn from their older peers. The program is quickly becoming a highlight for both mentors and mentees, fostering positive relationships and enhancing the school community.
RHMS 7th Grade GEAR UP Students
Seventh-grade students enrolled in the GEAR UP program are being introduced to the different RHHS P-Tech Pathways that will be available to them when they enter high school. One of the exciting pathways offered to students is Business & Industry. As part of their exposure to this pathway, these 7th-grade students are currently exploring the field of Building and Construction.
In one hands-on activity, students are building bird feeders as part of an initiative to raise awareness about wildlife conservation. This project not only gives them a glimpse into the practical skills associated with construction, but it also helps them understand the importance of environmental stewardship. Through these activities, students are gaining valuable experience and insight into future career possibilities while fostering a sense of responsibility toward nature.
Pictured below, you can see the students engaged in this meaningful project, creating bird feeders that will help support local wildlife.

Rio Grande Valley Special Kids Rodeo
On Friday, March 7, 2025, students from the RHMS Life Skills Unit were given a unique and exciting opportunity to attend the highly anticipated RGV Special Kids Rodeo. This event provided a fun and inclusive experience, allowing the students to enjoy the thrill of the rodeo alongside their peers. After the rodeo, the students were treated to a special culinary experience at Shogun Japanese Steak House in McAllen. There, they had the chance to enjoy a delicious meal, with the chefs preparing their food right before their eyes, adding a fun and interactive element to the dining experience. This memorable outing provided both entertainment and nourishment, creating lasting memories for the students.

“Rarely does anyone see the scars, the heart break, the extra hours, the sacrifice. But those who recognize that success requires all that and more, will cherish it deeply when success comes their way.” @drmike_goddard
“I think teachers are at their best, not when they are delivering a brilliantly innovative lesson...but when they are demonstrating patience and compassion toward a student who is struggling. @SteeleThoughts
