October 23, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
Estimadas familias de Woodcrest,
I hope everyone enjoyed the fall break! It was great to see so many of you at conferences. We’re a little over halfway through the trimester and look forward to connecting more in this second half.
In two weeks, Woodcrest will once again be an election site for the City of Fridley on November 5. We will have a normal school day that day with one exception: students will eat lunch in their classrooms because voting happens in the Woodcrest cafeteria. There is a bagged lunch option that day. We have already received bagged lunch preferences from many families, but please be sure to connect with your student’s homeroom teacher regarding lunch that day for your child.
Voters come and go through the cafeteria and will be entirely separate from the rest of the school building. We plan to have additional SLP staff at Woodcrest that day to provide extra hospitality and ensure a normal day of learning. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.
In partnership,
Jaime Nymann
Principal

Mariachi time
Last week, as a way to end Hispanic Heritage Month, Woodcrest Spanish Immersion held an all-school assembly with a Mariachi! The presentation was possible due to the Panther Foundation Sweepstakes and our school winner, Cecilia Hall.
A little history on Mariachi music: Mariachi music comes from Jalisco, Mexico. A mariachi consists of the following instruments - guitar, violin, guitarrón, Mexican vihuela and trumpet. Mariachi music is played at celebrations; such as quinceañeras, weddings, parties and birthdays.
During the assembly, students were able to hear different songs such as Mexico Lindo y Querido, El Mariachi Loco, La Cucaracha and even Baby Shark!
Check out the Woodcrest Spanish Immersion Facebook page for some fun videos!
Lego Creations
Students in Sra. Fasanaro's second grade class created Lego models to master place value and literacy skills. They enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to unleash their creativity, naming and vividly describing their models with an array of captivating adjectives. It was a truly inspiring and engaging experience for everyone involved!
Lovelace Challenge Begins!
Earlier this month the Maud Hart Lovelace reading challenge kicked off for students in grade 3 and 4. The PTO helped to host a "book tasting" where students got to learn more about the 10 book options during English class. Students in grades 3 and 4 can become a voter by reading 3 books and a judge by reading all 10. Make sure to check out the display in the English hall to see photos of all the amazing students as they finish the challenge!
Conference Meals a Hit!
The PTO provided dinner and snacks to staff during Conferences. The Soup and Salad bar were a hit and the teachers were very appreciative of the goodies to keep them going through long days of conferences. While parts were funded by the general PTO budget, we want to extend a special thank you to the following families that brought in food and donated their time and money to make this happen. We appreciate you all so much!
A huge thank you to: Mayra Juarez, Elizabeth Ellis, Maggy Osorio-Herrera, Rachel Keenan, Cassidy Jones, Jessica Morgan, Sydney Zepeda, Charissa Hall, Nicole Yochem, Emma Kilber, Ali Zwack, Sara Sanchez, Meghan Knoke, Tyra De Anda Luna, Natalie Zacharia, Blanca Vasquez, Nou Quito-Thao, Sharona Hermes, Jamie Galbreath, Jennifer Quist, Yvette Sanchez, Jennifer Huang and Devon Alwin.

Construction Program Continues to Build Community and Futures
The Construction Trades program at Spring Lake Park High School is in its third year, giving students hands-on experience through real-world construction projects This year, 40 students will complete their largest project yet: finishing a one-story, two-bedroom house that will become a permanent home for a local nonprofit.
Through partnerships with industry professionals, students gain experience working alongside plumbers, electricians, and other tradespeople to learn valuable construction skills. They have practiced by building smaller structures, like sheds and dog houses, and are now ready for the home’s finishing stages. The goal is to finish the house by December.
In addition to honing construction techniques, the students have built a sense of camaraderie. Recently, they gathered for a BBQ to celebrate their progress before diving into the final phase of the house project.
For students Trevor Kachina and Landon Ludke, the course is more than just learning construction - it is a stepping stone to their futures. The program is not just about building houses but also learning life skills, building community and shaping futures. Read more.
