Dear Whittier Families,

I hope this message finds you well! As we move into the sixth week of this grading period, I want to keep you informed about important updates and reminders for the week ahead.

Holiday Reminder

There will be no school on Monday, February 17th, in observance of the holiday. We hope you and your family enjoy the long weekend, and we look forward to seeing students back on campus Tuesday, February 18th!

Progress Reports

Week 6 progress reports will be available by Tuesday, February 18th after 5:00 pm. Please take some time to review your student’s progress and discuss their academic goals. If you have any questions or concerns about their grades, we encourage you to reach out to their teachers or schedule a parent-teacher conference.

TELPAS Testing

On Wednesday, February 19th, our English Learners will participate in TELPAS (Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System) testing. This is a state-mandated assessment designed to measure the progress students make in learning the English language in four domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This test helps us identify the areas where students excel and where they may need additional support. Please ensure that your student gets plenty of rest the night before and arrives at school on time.

Reminders for the Week

We want to remind both parents and students of a few important expectations to help us maintain a positive and productive school environment:

• Attendance Matters: Please ensure your child is present and on time each day. Every minute of instruction counts!
• School Preparedness: Students should come to school with the necessary materials, such as notebooks, writing utensils, and charged devices, if applicable.
• Behavior Expectations: We continue to emphasize the importance of respect, responsibility, and safety at school. Students are expected to follow classroom rules and procedures to create an environment conducive to learning for all.

Parent Engagement

As always, we value our partnership with families. Please continue to monitor your child’s progress and encourage them to ask for help when needed. We also invite you to reach out if there’s any way we can support your family.

No habrá clases el lunes 17 de febrero en observancia del día festivo. Esperamos que disfruten el fin de semana largo con sus familias, y esperamos ver a los estudiantes de regreso el martes 18 de febrero.

Reportes de Progreso

Los reportes de progreso de la sexta semana estarán disponibles el martes 18 de febrero. Por favor, tómense un tiempo para revisar el progreso de su estudiante y conversar sobre sus metas académicas. Si tienen preguntas o inquietudes sobre las calificaciones, los invitamos a comunicarse con los maestros o programar una conferencia de padres y maestros.

Examen TELPAS

El miércoles 19 de febrero, nuestros estudiantes aprendices de inglés participarán en las pruebas TELPAS (Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System). Esta es una evaluación mandatada por el estado diseñada para medir el progreso de los estudiantes en el aprendizaje del idioma inglés en cuatro áreas: comprensión auditiva, expresión oral, lectura y escritura. • Preparación escolar: Los estudiantes deben venir a la escuela con los materiales necesarios, como cuadernos, utensilios para escribir y dispositivos cargados, si corresponde.
• Expectativas de comportamiento: Seguimos enfatizando la importancia del respeto, la responsabilidad y la seguridad en la escuela. Se espera que los estudiantes sigan las reglas y procedimientos del salón para crear un ambiente de aprendizaje positivo para todos.

Compromiso de los Padres

The Whittier Middle School Tardy Policy outlines the following procedures and consequences for tardiness:

1. Tardy 1-2:

   • Consequence: Lunch Detention.
   • Documentation: Teachers record tardies in Frontline, and hallway leaders document them on the Tardy Google Form.
   • Notification: Parents are informed via School Messenger.

2. Tardy 3+:

   • Consequence: One full day in OCI (On-Campus Intervention). Additional measures may be applied depending on the number of tardies, including:
     • Parent conference.
     • Parent/teacher/student/administrator conference.
     • Multiple days of OCI.
     • Implementation of a daily student check-in/sign-in system.
   • Documentation: Tardies continue to be recorded in Frontline and the Google Form.

Key Notes:

• Tardies are tracked weekly for each class period.
• Tardies reset weekly for each class period.

This system is designed to ensure accountability and promote punctuality.

La política de retardos de Whittier establece los siguientes procedimientos y consecuencias para los estudiantes que lleguen tarde a clase:

1. Retardo 1-2:

   • Consecuencia: Detención durante el almuerzo.
   • Documentación: Los maestros registrarán los retardos en Frontline, y los líderes de pasillo los documentarán en el Formulario de Google para Retardos.
   • Notificación: Los padres serán notificados a través de School Messenger.

2. Retardos 3 o más:

   • Consecuencia: Un día completo en OCI (Intervención en el Campus). Dependiendo de la cantidad de retardos acumulados, se pueden implementar medidas adicionales, como:

Hello Families,

Attending school regularly not only ensures that your child receives the education they need to succeed but also fosters important social skills, discipline, and a sense of responsibility. Furthermore, arriving to class on time is equally important. Punctuality not only demonstrates respect for the learning environment but also maximizes instructional time, allowing teachers to cover important content without disruptions.

Students arriving to each class on time will receive DoJo points. These points can be used to purchase items in the Hawk Store at the end of each month! Students with regular attendance names will also go into a drawing for prizes such as gift cards, TV, bike, and more.

Asistir a la escuela con regularidad no sólo garantiza que su hijo reciba la educación que necesita para tener éxito, sino que también fomenta importantes habilidades sociales, disciplina y sentido de responsabilidad. Además, llegar a clase a tiempo es igualmente importante. La puntualidad no sólo demuestra respeto por el entorno de aprendizaje, sino que también maximiza el tiempo de instrucción, lo que permite a los maestros cubrir contenidos importantes sin interrupciones.
