Safety & Security
Safety and security are our top priorities. We conduct safety drills throughout the year, including fire drills and lockdown drills. When we prepare for safety drills with students, we focus on the importance of following directions. Our Building-Level Emergency Response Team works collaboratively with the Mount Pleasant Police Department to conduct these drills. We will notify you within one week before practicing each drill.
We are pleased to have Officer Luke Oliveri of the Mount Pleasant Police with us again as our districtwide School Resource Officer. Officer Luke provides us with tremendous support for safety and community building.
When visiting Hawthorne, you will be welcomed by our Security and Greeter team, Security Officer Joe and Mrs. Pallogudis. Please be sure to have photo identification. All visitors must enter the building through the red doors at the Memorial Drive entrance. Please use the intercom outside the red doors to request entry to the building. We ask that one person or family be in the vestibule at a time. Please wait outside the red doors if you see another person in the vestibule.
Once inside the vestibule, please use the second intercom to communicate with our security desk. If you are dropping off something, please place it on the radiator and indicate on the form who the item is for.
Please do not hold the door open for other parties or let anyone outside of your group into the school. We appreciate your cooperation. Once you have entered the building, please do not proceed past the desk without confirmation from the staff.
Brighton Arrival and Dismissal
A big thank you to our families for observing the safety rules at Brighton. This year we have added a video resource to explain our procedures. Thank you to Mr. Pond, Officer Luke, Ms. Grassi, Ms. Muratore, Ms. Colombo, and Ben for putting this together. Please use the link to view the video. Brighton Video 2024
Counseling Corner
The first few weeks of school are an adjustment. Our work now is focused on helping students feel comfortable as they learn new routines, make new friends, and build stamina for school. Your children may come home a bit tired and hungry. They will definitely need a little extra downtime and a few more hugs.
We are here to support you as we build new routines together. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions. Our administration, staff and team of school psychologists, Mrs. Westfall and Dr. Megan Killelea are here to support you. Our Counseling Corner page also has helpful information.
Physical Education, Health & Wellness, and Encore Classes
In addition to our grade-level classrooms, our students attend one of the Encore classes in Art, Library, STEM, or Music daily. They are engaged in Physical Education and Health classes every day with Mr. Bendlin, Mrs. Smacchia, and Mr. Thomas. These core classes are a vital part of our educational program and students often tell us that it is their favorite part of the day. Stay tuned as we will share events and updates from these classes as part of our Hawthorne Happenings.
Building Communities
Thank you to our Hawthorne families for joining us for our Back to School presentations last night. We were very excited to welcome you to our vibrant learning spaces. As we establish routines and get to know each other, each classroom becomes a community.
As part of building our classroom communities, our teachers would love to learn more about your family and your rich and interesting cultural heritage. We would also love to hear more about how you might like to share your family traditions with our students in school. We appreciate you taking the time to help by completing the questionnaire below. Please complete the questionnaire prior to October 4th. Thank you.
