Hello Shady Grove Community! It is an honor to serve as one of your substitute principals as we wrap up the 2025 school year.
I have been a lifelong educator and learner. After graduating from Baylor University, I entered my first instructional position as a first grade teacher. Over my thirty-five year career I have worked in Jefferson ISD, Aldine ISD, Bastrop ISD and Leander ISD along with a five year adventure at a private school in Guatemala. I earned my Masters' degree in Administration from Sam Houston State University and my Doctorate from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor. I retired in 2019 and worked at my church as the Children's Pastor for a few years. I've enjoyed it all, but I have to admit that Elementary Schools are my happy place!
I have a set of grown twins, one daughter-in-law and three grandchildren. Also, my home wouldn't be complete without my little pup, Gabby. Hanging out with family, cooking, yoga and traveling are my favorite things to do for fun.
Please know that I am happy to be here supporting students and teachers. I value the trust you have placed in your local campus and will work diligently to uphold that meaningful relationship.
Mrs. Hejl
Hello Shady Grove Elementary Families!
It is a pleasure to join Burnet CISD as one of your substitute principals at Shady Grove.
I have been a teacher, assistant principal, principal and mentor principal for over 33 years. I graduated from Southwest Texas State University (now known as Texas State) and began my teaching career in Manor ISD. I also earned my Masters' degree from Southwest Texas State University in Counseling and Administration. The majority of my career has been in Leander ISD where I developed a passion for and expertise in continuous improvement and systems learning. Upon retiring in 2015, I continued to work in Leander and other nearby districts supporting new administrators and campuses needing an interim principal.
My husband and I moved from Cedar Park to the Liberty Hill/Burnet area along the San Gabriel River when we retired. I have two grown sons and two sweet granddaughters. In my spare time I enjoy time with the grandkids, special friends and traveling. .
Please reach out to me if I can be of support to you in the coming months. Being a part of the Shady Grove Elementary community is an honor. You have great kids and amazing teachers. I look forward to working with you all as we complete this school year together.
Hazmat Drill
Student safety is a top priority. As such, we routinely complete drills so that students and staff know what to do in case of a real emergency. On 3/29, we completed our hazmat drill in the event there were ever a chemical spill on campus.

Cell Phones & Other Electronic Devices
We've noticed students with devices lately and want to send a reminder regarding this district's position on cell phones and other electronic devices at the elementary level.
"The district permits students to possess personal cell phones for safety purposes; however, these devices must remain turned off during the following times on each campus:
Elementary Schools - cell phones and/or smart watches must be turned off and put away from the time a student arrives on campus through dismissal. Earbuds and headphones may only be used for instructional purposes with a district-provided device." (BCISD Student Handbook 2024-2025, pgs 54-55)
Average Daily Attendance for SGE
Last Week's ADA for SGE: 95.27%
ADA stands for Average Daily Attendance and is defined as the total days of student attendance divided by the total days of instruction. Check out SGE's ADA trends in the chart above.
"98 IS Great!" We'll celebrate as a campus when we hit a week with 98% attendance!
We recognize that illnesses and events take place that necesitate absences, however, we do encourage every student to be in school every day he/she is able. Let's work for 98%!
Caught with Character!
This week we're celebrating our new Leader of the Pack! Here's what Mrs. Franklin had to say...
Leo kindly and respectfully thanked the cafeteira staff for his food as he picked up his tray at lunch. His actions showed his polite and loving character.
Academics + Character = Success

Scottish Rite: Take Time to Read Program
During Texas Public Schools Month, Masons and elementary schools celebrate and encourage reading by asking students to Take Time to Read every day!
Your child will bring home a Take Time to Read calendar for the month of March. Here's how it works:
-Mark the calendar each day your child reads.
-Turn in the Take Time to Read calendar to the classroom teacher by Friday, April 4th.
-Scottish Rite will bring a prize for students who turned in the completed calendar!
It's that easy! We hope you and your kiddos TAKE TIME TO READ!
For the 5th six weeks, we're focusing on habit #5!
