Pastor Rich's Weekly Devotional
The Heart of one Called
People look at the outward appearance,
But the Lord looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7
There was a time in US history when a president without a beard was the exception. In the latter half of the 1800’s, five presidents sported full beards: Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, and Benjamin Harrison, the last president to have a beard. Each one of these presidents may have had a tenure filled with successes or failures, but at that time in our nation’s history, their beard helped them to look the part as a leader.
“Looking the part” can change with changing times, because we very quickly judge others on their appearance. The way another person presents themselves we presume will tell a great deal about them and their abilities.
God, however, looks not at the outward appearance, but at the heart of every person.
The prophet Samuel was sent by God to the home of Jesse, because God had “chosen one of his sons to be king” (1 Samuel 16:1). Samuel determined to find a son of Jesse worthy of the challenge. Once he arrived at Jesse’s home, he met his sons. “Surely among these young men is the perfect candidate to unseat King Saul” thought the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 16:8-10).
But none of these sons was the one God had chosen. God taught Samuel not to look at the external appearance, because God issues a call not based on the way someone looks, but upon character, faith, heart. David was chosen because he had a heart for the Lord.
May our hearts long to please the Lord, serve the Lord, and submit to God’s calling.
