Additional Course Pathways Now Available for Ohio's Introduction to the Science of Reading PD
Three additional pathways are now available on the Department’s Learning Management System for the Science of Reading Professional Development requirements under House Bill 33 of the 135th General Assembly. Educators and administrators are required to complete the Science of Learning PD no later than June 30, 2025. Detailed information can be found on the Departments website.
- Pathway A: Ohio’s Introduction to the Science of Reading, Kindergarten-Grade 5 Course
- Pathway B: Ohio’s Introduction to the Science of Reading Course, Kindergarten-Grade 5 (Abbreviated) (Just Added)
- Pathway C: Ohio’s Introduction to the Science of Reading, Grades 6-12 Course
- Pathway D: Ohio’s Introduction to the Science of Reading Course, Grades 6-12 (Abbreviated) (Just Added)
- Pathway E: Ohio’s Introduction to the Science of Reading Course, Grades 6-12 Content Areas (Just Added)
Pathway F: Ohio’s Introduction to the Science of Reading Course, Administrators K-12 will be available soon in the Departments Learning Management System.
2nd Application Window for the Ohio CTE Equipment Grant Program closes April 12
The purpose of the Ohio CTE Education Equipment Grant Program is to award competitive grants to schools to establish or expand CTE programs, with priority for programs that support careers on Ohio’s Top Jobs List and establish or expand credentialing programs from the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation Innovative Workforce Incentive Program list. Eligible applicants are defined as city, local and exempted village school districts, community schools, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics schools and joint vocational school districts. The first round of applications ended December 15th, 2023 with Bryan City Schools, Findlay City Schools, Wayne Trace Local Schools and Vanguard-Sentinel Career & Technology Center all being awarded grants. April is Autism Awareness Month
The Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) has released a new OSEP Fast Facts: Children Identified with Autism, which takes an updated look at data on children whose primary disability is autism. OSEP Fast Facts is an ongoing effort to display data from the 12 data collections authorized under IDEA Section 618 into graphic, visual representations with the intent to present 618 data quickly and clearly. Here are a Few Agencies With a Focus on Autism
The Autism Center at OCALI works to build the capacity of school districts and other education agencies to improve their instruction and support for individuals with autism. Their website is a source of information on research, resources, trainings, technical assistance and consultations.
The Autism Society of Northwest Ohio is a non-profit agency that offers support, education, and advocacy to individuals, parents, family members and professionals affected by Autism in the following 12 counties: Lucas, Defiance, Fulton, Hancock, Henry, Ottawa, Paulding, Putnam, Sandusky, Seneca, Williams, and Wood.
The nomination window for the 2024 R.A. Horn and Franklin B. Walter Awards ends April 15
The R.A. Horn Outstanding Student Achievement Award and the Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator Award is presented to one exemplary special education student and one educator or team that has made extraordinary contributions to the education of students with disabilities from each of the 16 State Support Teams. The awards will be presented in person on June 11, 2024 from 1:00 - 3:00 (location to be determined). Contact Tamie Cruz if you have any questions.
For you, it only takes a few minutes to nominate that extraordinary student or educator. For them, the recognition is priceless!

ReadOhio Open Office Hours
Each Friday, starting March 15 through April 26, 2024 from 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. the Department’s literacy policy team will take questions on topics including science of reading professional development, high-quality instructional materials, English language arts core curriculum requirements, reading intervention requirements, and high-dosage tutoring. ED STEPS Open Office Hours
Each Thursday until May 30, 2024 from 1:00 - 2:00 the Department will be answering questions regarding the ED STEPS system and process. The office hours are open to superintendents, treasurers, principals or other ED STEPS users in ED STEPS Cohort 1 who must complete a three-year One Needs Assessment and One Plan. The deadline for Cohort 1 entities to complete the ED STEPS One Needs Assessment and Plan is April 30, 2024. Additional information.

Literacy Academy 2024
The Department's seventh annual Literacy Academy is returning live and in-person on June 10-11, 2024 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Columbus. Resources and registration for this year's event will be available soon on the Department's website.
The Literacy Academy's webpage provides access to short professional development courses in literacy for grades K-12, as well as links to past Academies resources and sessions.
Behavioral Leadership Academy Training
Presented by Ervin Educational Consulting and Hosted by Perrysburg Schools, The Behavioral Leadership Academy Training provides staff with comprehensive procedures and strategies that can be easily implemented to support students in their class who need additional instructions and support with the development of their social-emotional skills, self-regulation skills, and adaptive behavior skills. Two Sessions will be offered: June 12-14 OR July 24-26, 2024 (8:00-3:30).

Future Forward Ohio Spotlights: Toledo School District
School leaders, nonprofits and other partners are launching strategic and innovative initiatives to help Ohio's students recover from the impact of the pandemic. The Ohio Department of Education is sharing these promising practices to help Ohio's education community learn from each other and accelerate student success.
Watch this short video to see how the Toledo School District partnered with Health Partners of Western Ohio to create the Bowsher Health Center to provide additional resources to support students' physical and mental health as well as increase student attendance through the year.
