A Note from Mrs. Johansen
Dear Sandburg Families,
I have included a few updates in this newsletter for families.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. West on completing his Doctoral Program at Loyola University. He is graduating tomorrow, May 7th. Great work, Dr. West!
As you've heard, Dr. West will be joining the Winston Campus community as the Assistant Principal for the 24-25 school year. We are very sad to see him leave, but know that he will do great things at Winston. Our new Assistant Principal, Mr. Miguel Hernandez, will officially start his new role at Sandburg on July 1, 2024. Mr. Hernandez has been present at a few events already this spring. He will be visiting the school next week to meet students and staff again. Welcome, Mr. Hernandez!
Bike to School Day is Wednesday! Students who participate will enter a raffle to win prizes from Mike's Bike Shop in Palatine.
We are excited to share that on Friday, May 10th, the District will be participating in a community initiative called "High Five Fridays". We have invited our first responders and other community members to help greet students as they arrive at Sandburg in the morning. If you see emergency vehicles outside of our school on the morning of the 10th, please know they are there to greet our students.
Have a wonderful week,
Erika Johansen
NASA Astronaut Jose Hernandez is coming to Winston Campus!!!!
Jose Hernandez is the subject of the recent box office hit movie A Million Miles Away (see trailer linked here). Mr. Hernández will share his and his family's incredible journey to the stars. You'll hear how he went from working the fields in Michoacán, Mexico, to soaring among the stars on the Space Shuttle Mission STS-128. His story is a testament to the power of dedication, hard work, and family support. It's a powerful reminder that dreams have no limits!

Nine days or less for school success!
Across the state, student absenteeism is getting a lot of attention right now, and for good reason. In Illinois, more than 1 of every 4 students misses about 2 days a month, or 10% of the school year. Students missing this much of the school year are considered Chronically Absent. Missing two days a month may not seem like a lot, but it equals missing a whole month of school. In fact, if starting in kindergarten, a student who misses just 1.5 days each month will have missed 175 days by the end of their senior year. That’s a whole school year of lost instruction!
In District 15, about 1 in five students (21%) was Chronically Absent. The positive academic and social impact of regular attendance is so important that District 15 has committed to reducing the number of chronically absent students in half (from 21% to 10%) by 2027. To support this goal, District 15 is starting an “Every Day Counts: Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow” initiative in the Fall of the upcoming school year.
Next Fall, parents will see some new actions and communication from the District and Sandburg. These actions are designed to promote regular student attendance. In the Fall, families will begin to receive information about the importance of attendance, tips on how to help students attend as much school as possible, and regular updates to help families track how often their student is absent each month. Our schools are also organizing themselves to reach out early and support students and families experiencing attendance difficulties. If you are concerned about your child’s attendance, consider logging into Infinite Campus to check exactly how many absences they had this year.
Reminder - Registration for 2024-2025 School Year
Online student registration for the 2024-2025 school year is now open. The year ahead brings many new and exciting initiatives to District 15! One such something new is that this is the first year we will offer FULL-DAY KINDERGARTEN for every student. Additionally, many of our schools are undergoing construction which will be completed for the upcoming school year, AND our 6th graders will join their adolescent peers in our newly restructured middle schools.
The first day of school for the 2024-2025 school year is Thursday, September 5 for grades 1-8 and Friday, September 6 for kindergarten and early childhood students.
Please visit our registration page to begin registering your child(ren) for school. Doing so helps us solidify staffing for our schools, allows your child(ren) to be placed on a class list, and allows your child(ren) to ride a bus to and from school. Registration MUST be completed and student fees must be paid by July 1, 2024. With close to 12,000 students to place in a classroom and on bus routes, we ask that you please do your part and register on or before July 1.
