Get Ready for Money Smart Week 2016

Planning a program for Money Smart Week 2016? Get an early start on spring program planning and join us for Financial Literacy @ Your Library on Tuesday, January 5, 2pm-4pm at the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library.


OLIS and RILA are joining forces to assist librarians in developing and promoting financial education programs at libraries across the state.

Meet representatives from financial organizations who have partnered with libraries during RILA's Money Smart Week and can offer resources and programming. Presenters Bill Bianchi from the RI Student Loan Authority, and Pauline Abetti from Junior Achievement RI may be of special interest to youth services librarians. This is a great opportunity to learn more about financial education programs your library may offer during Money Smart Week, which will take place April 23-30, 2016.


Learn about the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) partnership with libraries. Printed resources will be available to libraries. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the resources and programs available so that your library can join financial literacy awareness.

Cranston Public Library offered a NaNoWriMo kids writing workshop for grades 3-8 on Monday nights from 6-7 PM for the whole month of November. They had 25 sign-ups and attendance never fell below 23! At the first meeting they used the "plot roller coaster" from NaNoWriMo's YWP workbook to help kids plan their stories, and then at each program they did a read-aloud, discussed an element of the craft of writing, and then had the kids write for about a half-hours straight. They always closed with a fun activity, like a game of NaNo Bingo! At the end of the five-week program, most kids had finished their stories, and they all got to take home their writing kits, which consisted of paper, pencils, erasers, post-its, and index cards packaged in a personal-sized pizza box from a local bakery. Mock Awards

The votes are in. On Wednesday December 9, eight public and school librarians selected Float by Daniel Miyares as the 2015 Rhode Island Mock Caldecott Winner. Waiting by Kevin Henkes was selected as the 2015 Mock Caledcott Honor Book.

Join us in selecting the 2016 RI Mock Newbery Award winner on January 6, 6:30pm-8:30pm at the East Greenwich Free Library. Check out the final list and come prepared to defend your favorites!

Taming the Temperament: Understanding the “Why” and Learning Styles in Infants and Toddlers

Presenter(s)/Discussion Leader(s): Cheryl Hovey, MS

This workshop will help librarians answer the questions "What is temperament?" and "Why is it important to understand?" This workshop is based on current research and how this information can be used to optimize a child's growth and development and provides unique insights about children's temperaments. Participants will be learn in a small group activity how to utilize this information in their everyday planning.

Children's Summer Reading Performer Showcase

The Performer's Showcase is your chance to meet area educators/performers interested in being a part of the annual statewide children's Summer Reading Program. In addition to observing 11 presentations, visit with other program providers setting up table top displays. This is your opportunity to provide feedback and offer your recommendations for the 2016 slate of programs offered statewide.
