Is Your Student's Attendance On Track?
At Wasatch Peak Academy, we know that every day of learning matters. When children attend school consistently, they build strong foundations for academic achievement, social growth, and future success. Our goal is to ensure that all students miss fewer than 10 days of school per year—that’s about 1 day per month. Why? Because attendance directly impacts your child’s learning and growth.
Why Attendance Matters
Consistent Attendance Boosts Learning: Missing just 2 days per month can add up to a full month of lost learning by the end of the school year, making it harder for children to stay on track.
Improved Social Skills: Being in school regularly helps children build friendships, teamwork skills, and confidence.
Attendance Predicts Success: Research shows that students with good attendance are more likely to graduate from high school and succeed in college or careers.
Even Excused Absences Have an Impact: While we understand that some absences are unavoidable, even excused absences result in lost learning time that can significantly affect
What Is Chronic Absenteeism? Chronic absenteeism means missing 18 or more days of school in a year—that’s about 2 days per month. even excused absences and illnesses can add up quickly.
Practical Tips to Improve Attendance We understand that life happens, and there are challenges that may impact your child’s attendance. Here are some ways you can help:
Set a Consistent Routine: Ensure your child goes to bed and wakes up at the same time every day to establish a healthy sleep schedule.
Schedule Appointments Wisely: Try to plan doctor or dentist visits after school hours or during school breaks.
Talk About School Positively: Encourage your child to see school as an exciting place to learn and grow.
Communicate with Us: If your family is facing challenges, let us know! We’re here to support you with resources and solutions.
Track Attendance: Keep an eye on your child’s attendance using Aspire, and celebrate milestones for consistent attendance.
Together, we can help all our students reach their full potential. Let’s make every day count!
Research Support
If your student benefits from Special Education Services and you would be willing to help an educator complete their research for a PhD project please take a moment to review the flyer below for how a few minutes of your time can help.
Spelling Bee
We are excited to be hosting our annual spelling bee with classroom bee's at the end of January and the school wide bee in early February. We wanted to give kids a chance to start practicing now. You can access the Spelling Bee word list below.
For Review
If you read last week's Principal's Message in the Wednesday Note, congratulations—you are completely caught up! If you missed it or benefit from reminders, all the information below is still true and relevant and here for you to review!
CogAT Testing 6th Grade Students
We will be starting the CogAT testing required by Davis School District for incoming 7th graders to enter some of the advanced math classes and/or the DEEP program. These tests will take place next week. We plan to include all students in an advanced math or literacy class and any additional students recommended by teachers. If your child is not in one of these classes but you would still like them to participate, please reach out to Mr. Thorpe, our testing administrator. athorpe@wasatchpeak.org. If you have additional questions or concerns about the tests, please reach out to Mrs. Pilkington.
WPA 2025-2026 Lottery- Open NOW
(This is for all NEW students, including SIBLINGS that have never attended WPA)
We are excited to open our lottery to new students on December 10th.
If you have a younger sibling entering our kindergarten program (or other grades) next year, please log in and register them NOW. We will be holding a sibling lottery on Monday the 16th, and we don’t want to miss your student.
Do you know someone who would love WPA? Our very best advertising for WPA has always come by word of mouth from WPA’s families. If you know of a family that would be a great fit for WPA, please take a moment to tell them what you like about our school and share our lottery link. You can also invite them to visit us by taking a tour. Please call the front office to make arrangements.
Subs and TA's
If you or someone you know enjoys working with children, values education and wants a school-friendly schedule, working at WPA may be a great fit. We are looking for TAs able to work Monday-Thursday 8:00-2:45 and Fridays from 8:00-12:45 and subs who can work as needed. If you are interested in these positions, please reach out to Mrs. Pilkington at apilkington@wasatchpeak.org
Weather, Road Conditions, and Late Starts
We consider many things when deciding to delay the start of school so students can arrive at school safely. When the decision has been made about delaying the start of school, we will notify parents via text message. (If you are not receiving our text messages, please contact the front office.) We also post this information on our social media pages. Because we take the same feedback on road conditions into consideration, it is very likely that if Davis School District is delaying the start of school, we will be doing the same. We also understand that some families travel from outside Davis County or have other unique travel situations. We ask that families use their best judgment regarding road conditions and make a safe arrival a priority, If Davis School District determines it is not safe to travel to school for the day we will offer online learning opportunities to WPA students for a distance learning day.
Cold and Flu...and Covid Season
Attendance is an influential factor that impacts a child's learning. As early as Kindergarten, missing school can have long-term effects on a child's education. A lot of research supports the goal for students to miss less than ten days per school year or less than one day per month. You can access your student's attendance through Aspire or contact the front office for additional details.
That being said, general guidelines for keeping your child home from school include.
- They have a fever above 101 degrees Fahrenheit within the past 24 hours
- They have had episodes of vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours
- They are not well enough to participate in class
Mid-Year Testing
In the coming weeks, we will begin Interim RISE assessments. These assessments help us individualize and improve our instruction to all students. Following these tests we do occasionally make adjustments to classroom assignments in order to target the specific academic needs of student. If you have any questions regarding these assessments or class placements, please contact us.
