Community School Updates August 2024
Welcome Back!
Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! One of the big changes at Lansdowne High School this year will be our designation as one of Baltimore County’s 91 community schools. I'm Dr. Joy Carey, and I will serve as the high school's Community School Facilitator. In this role, one of my responsibilities will be to conduct a needs assessment survey for students, staff, and community members. This information will be used in connection with our School Performance Plan to leverage partnerships with area businesses, organizations, and community members. These partnerships will support and strengthen our community by providing access to services and opportunities for our students, teachers, and families. Think of things like our Food Pantry, courses offered to our students for free through CCBC, and health clinics available for free to our families. My position is a conduit to identify the needs and find ways to address them.
My career in education spans 22 years through work as a middle school and high school English teacher as well as a literacy coach and consultant. This is my second year at LHS, and I'm really excited to shift my role from classroom teacher to Community School Facilitator.
Many of you are already engaged in the important community school-minded work and have wonderful established partnerships with our school. THANK YOU! Becoming a community school is an exciting opportunity for Lansdowne! We join several of our feeder schools that are already community schools. I’m looking forward to working alongside you this year to make a difference for our students, their families, and our community.
We are excited to become a Community School!

Little Free Library Comes to Lansdowne HS
If you're looking for a good book, check our the Little Free Library on the front lawn at the high school. We held our ribbon cutting ceremony in June, and we keep the library stocked with reading material for all ages. Books are free to take, but you may also leave a book to share with another reader. It's a great opportunity to share the love of reading!
