December 11, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
Westwood Families,
Next week the Junior Panther Mentors have planned spirit days to end the 2024 calendar year and to start trimester 2 with a spirit of Panther Pride. Here is the lineup:
- Monday, December 16: Comfy Cozy Day
- Tuesday, December 17: Twinning Day – dress alike or in MN Twins gear
- Wednesday, December 18: Wacky Tacky Day
- Thursday, December 19: Team Color Day
- Friday, December 20: SLP Spirit Day
Report cards are available to families in Campus Parent Portal. If you have questions, please connect with your child’s teacher.
Our next family pulse check is tomorrow, Thursday. Watch for email/text and take a moment to share your experiences. We share bright spots with our staff and take every piece of feedback into account. Thanks for taking the time. It only takes a minute.
It feels like winter has arrived this year. All fifth and sixth graders go outside for recess each day when the weather permits. Students in grades 7 and 8 have a choice to go out for recess. However, on some days due to staffing, all students go out. All students should have a jacket, hat and gloves or mittens.
Enjoy the rest of your week,
Tom Larson
Principal

Life at a Trading Post during the Fur Trade

Students were invited to bring items that they wanted to trade with others, negotiate their value, and make decisions about trading for important resources. It was a fun experience!
"The Little Mermaid" at the Ordway
Singers from the Westwood and Spring Lake Park High School choirs attended Disney's Broadway production of "The Little Mermaid" at the Ordway Theater in St. Paul. The singers were delighted by the beauty of the theater and thoroughly enjoyed seeing a professional musical production. Choir members saw firsthand how musicians work together to create a product using the elements of music, theater, and technology. SLP choir members look forward to seeing more productions in the future!

Mrs. Johnson’s class went on a deep dive exploration in social studies to explore a 500 year old sunken ship to learn about the artifacts the Europeans brought on their trip to the New World (North America).

From paper plants to community circles
The paper plants on the wall are all different and filled with students’ hopes and dreams. In another room, there is a student signed poster with the class rules. In another space, Tuesday mornings are circle time. Across Spring Lake Park Schools, specific, intentional strategies and practices like these are creating a learner-centered environment.
A learner-centered environment is a space where students feel seen, heard, valued – that they belong. It’s a space to safely develop and practice skills like working together and treating each other with respect and kindness. It’s a place of shared responsibility where each member supports and feels supported in learning.
Teachers across grade levels and schools dip into a shared collection of strategies, tools and resources to support the social, emotional and behavioral development and management practices that create a safe, learner-centered environment.
Take a peek into four strategies that put learners at the center.
