Fenn Elementary School Newsletter
September 2023
From Mr. Perry
Fenn families,
This is our first official newsletter for the new school year. Students and staff are in the full swing of school and we are so glad to see all of our students back to Fenn! Each year the message is clear for all of our students; we hope that this is the best year ever for everyone! I also hope everyone had a beautiful Labor Day weekend and enjoyed the weather and had a chance to get outside and play.
I would love to see everyone at our PTO-sponsored Dine to Donate at Culvers on September 10 from 4-8pm. This is a great opportunity to support our school through this fundraiser. This is also a great way to support Culvers! Various Fenn staff will be working this event. It will be busy and fun too! I hope to see you there.
I hope everyone has a great September and this beautiful weather continues. Go Bees!

Cell phones/cellular/wifi/smart watches
From the 2024-2024 Medina Elementary School Handbook:
ELECTRONIC DEVICES
- Electronic devices such as (laser pointers, video cameras, cameras, etc.) are prohibited in school.
- Cell phones, smartwatches, electronic devices such as (Ipods, MP3 players, Ipads, Nooks, Kindles, Gizmos, Gizmo watches, etc) and any video game devices must be turned off and in the student’s book bag and/or locker during school hours.
- If a student violates this policy then they are asked to turn it off and put it away. If they violate it again or refuse to put it away then parents are called and a plan is made to pick up the cell phone.
Attendance Priority
We ask and encourage parents and families to continue making attendance a priority. Daily absences and tardiness have a direct effect on attendance and academics. Attendance is a critical concern: students need to be present to engage with learning as student attendance directly impacts student achievement and graduation. Chronic absenteeism, defined as students missing 10% or more of school hours due to absence for any reason, can lead to younger students struggling with learning to read by third grade, decreased achievement in middle school, and difficulty graduating high school.
Thank you for making this a priority. We miss our students when they are not here and being absent truly impacts student learning.
Final Form Completion
In final forms this year, you will find the option to OPT OUT OF CHROMEBOOK INSURANCE FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 2-12. This needs to be completed no later than September 15.

Parking Details
Front Entrance Parking Lot/Traffic and Safety
Our front parking lot is busy at the beginning and end of the day. We have many students and parents traveling through the lot at dismissal time. Please follow the expectations below to ensure student safety:
Walkers/car riders are dismissed first beginning at 3:20
Bussers are dismissed a few minutes later
Daycare buses/vans are dismissed last
Please don't double park or park along a curb. If there are no available parking spaces, please park in other locations (HS lot across the street, tennis court lot, west side of the school along Spring Grove)
Bus dismissal is the priority. When we get the buses going early, traffic is light. Please do not criticize the safety guards on duty, they are focusing on crossing students and families.
DO NOT leave cars running and unattended; this is unsafe.
Even if the yellow gates are open to the back playground, this is never an area for vehicles. Do not pull a vehicle onto the back playground at any time. Thank you.
Animals of any type are not permitted during drop off or pick up. Please leave all pets either at home or in your vehicle during this time.
No parking in the fire lane
Covid Information
Do kids have to stay home if someone in the family has COVID?
In general kids can come to school as long as they are feeling well unless they have tested
positive for COVID. If a student tests positive for COVID, they have to stay home for at least 24 hours or until their symptoms are getting better overall AND they have been fever-free for 24 hours without fever-
reducing medication.
Are masks required after testing positive?
No, they are recommended and encouraged. More information can be found here.
PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports)
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social-emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It also improves teacher health and well-being. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives.
At Sidney Fenn and all of our Medina City Schools, we use a matrix to help teach students the importance of the 3 Rs. Being respectful, responsible, and ready are the daily goals for all of our students. Students earn PBIS points that they can then use in our school store, a teacher's classroom store, or in other areas around the school. Attached is our PBIS matrix for parents to see and review. These same expectations are referenced each morning on our announcements and modeled throughout the day by students and staff.
Office Procedures
Please call by 9:00 a.m. if your child will be absent or tardy. Our late bell rings at 8:55 am each day. Students entering the building after the late bell will be directed to the main office before going to their homeroom teacher.
