The Wizard of Oz
Update From Nurse Decker-Gendron
As most of you are aware, tick season is upon us. New Hampshire is a high tick-related
disease State. Unfortunately, the habitat in NH, as well as the woods surrounding the
playground at CES, are prime breeding grounds for ticks. June is a peak month for visiting the
emergency room for tick bites. Please help us provide an added level of protection for your
children by ensuring the following:
● Apply insect repellent on your children before they arrive at school. Repellent with
20-30% DEET is safe for children to have on their skin.
● Provide your student with a hat to wear while outside at school. Ticks love warm and
hard to find places like the scalp, hairline and ears!
● Encourage your child to wash their hair and take a bath/shower every night. This is
often when ticks are discovered.
● Perform regular tick checks after your child has been outside.
Other tips:
● Permethrin, an insecticide, can be applied to clothing. Once dry, it is safe and can
provide an added layer of protection against ticks.
● When removing ticks, be sure to use tweezers or a tick spoon and grab the tick by its
head. Pull straight up so that the head and body are both removed. Dispose of the tick
immediately.
● Dry clothes in the dryer on high for ten minutes to kill any attached ticks.
● Call your child’s doctor immediately if your child:
○ develops a rash and complains of any unusual symptoms such as headache,
joint/muscle aches, and fatigue.
○ has a tick that has been attached to the skin for > 72 hours and appears
engorged

A Night with the Arts
A very special thank you to Ms. Hoover and Mrs. McGill, who brought us a very successful Night with the Arts at CES! Learners shared poetry, sang songs, played music, and created a wide variety of visual art from 2-D and 3-D art, to a gorgeous quilt. The glow room was a huge success as well! Thank you to all of the staff and volunteers who helped prepare for this special night.
Memorial Day Program
Field Day is Coming! - Update from Mr. McWhinnie
Thursday June 6th from 8:45 - 11:35 AM (with a rain date of June 13th)
Field day is not just a fun day; it is the culminating event of weeks of physical education training and practice for our students. Although there is an element of competition, emphasis is on having fun, individual effort and doing your own personal best. As in all aspects of life, however, it is a learning process for children to realize and cope with the reality that only one person comes in first place, one in second place, etc. We all have strengths and challenges. Field day gives some children the opportunity to be recognized for physical abilities and for others to set goals to work on for the next year. Participation and fun is everyone's reward on field day!
Health & Safety Considerations
All students must wear sneakers and socks. Please send a sport water bottle filled with water with your child. Please have your child wear their orange field day t-shirt and athletic clothing instead of skirts and dresses (Field Day shirts will be distributed soon to those who ordered them). Students may wear hats and sunglasses for protection from the sun. Please apply sunscreen and/or bug spray to your child before school.
Please email Mr. McWhinnie at ymcwhinnie@sau80.org if you have any questions about field day!
PTO Update From Emily Perlet
Hello from the CES PTO! We are happy to announce that the basketball court refresh project is well on its way! The court had been resealed, thanks to the help of volunteers Jeff Plue and Tom Perlet! A huge thank you to Jeff and Tom! Many volunteers have also helped in the planning process, and we very much appreciate all of your support and hard work. A big thank you to all the 4th graders, CES students, and parents who helped at the car wash! The car wash and bake sale was held to raise funds for the project, and it was so much fun. Thank you to all the CES community members who came out to support this event and help make it such a success! We will continue the project by repainting the court lines, and working to refresh the basketball hoops and rims. We will host a Playground Party to celebrate the year and celebrate the newly refreshed basketball court. The Playground Party will be on Tuesday June 11 at 4:00. We hope to see you all there!
Our May PTO meeting was a big success. We voted in two new PTO Chairs, Becca Plue and Chelsea Szepan, and a new Treasurer, Aimee Shaw. Erin Meeh will continue to serve as the PTO secretary. We thank these women for their commitment to our PTO, and look forward to their leadership next year!
As we begin wrapping up this year with CES PTO and look toward next school year, we would like to thank two PTO members who have dedicated their time and energy to the PTO for many years, and have been driving forces in all that the PTO has accomplished. Thank you to Meghan Glines and Jessie Heath for all their years of service to the PTO. We will miss you greatly and we appreciate all you have given to the PTO and the school!
Our final PTO meeting for the school year is coming up on Thursday June 6th. We will meet at 6PM at Canterbury Woods. We would love to have you join us!
One Room Schoolhouse Visits
All CES learners have taken part in the one-room schoolhouse program. With each visit, about 20 students from first grade to the fifth grade visited the school, allowing them to experience part of one day set in the year 1943. Original desks, chalkboards and memorabilia helped to make this experience as authentic as possible. Students engaged in several activities, such as journaling, singing patriotic songs, penmanship practice, and learning about historical events and social activities of the time. Kindergarten will enjoy a separate visit to the schoolhouse next week.
Thank you to Mrs. Gingrich for your hard work in coordinating this program. Also, thank you to The Canterbury Historical Society for sponsoring the program and supporting us. We appreciate the BHS students who attended and supported the program as well.
