Superintendent Quarterly
October 2024
What a time to be a Jaguar!
It's hard to believe that we have completed the first quarter of the school year! I am so pleased with the progress we are making day after day in Hubbard ISD. Instructionally, I am seeing purpose and intentionality in all grade levels across all subjects. We have invested in a robust curriculum aligned to state standards, as well as significant amounts of professional development. When I walk classrooms, I can see the evidence of student learning in action. Change is not easy, and our teachers and staff have jumped in with both feet in order to best serve our students, and for that I am grateful.
We have launched AVID at the secondary, which is geared toward college and career readiness. It's exciting to see a culture begin to take shape at the secondary school, where college and career options become the norm and not the exception. Last years graduating class had less than a third of them enroll in a two or four year college this Fall. In Hubbard, through AVID, we are working to increase that percentage through preparing our students for rigorous coursework and post-secondary education. These conversations and learning opportunities through AVID begin as early as 8th grade, to promote and support students in rigorous coursework. It's great to see students being able to articulate their future goals and expectations, and AVID is a vehicle to help them get there.
Curriculum and professional development is not all that is new, we are making so much progress with our Education Foundation. The Hubbard Education Foundation (HEF) is a separate 501(c)(3), and is designed to fundraise and support the Hubbard ISD. The HEF has already raised a significant amount of money this year that will provide teacher innovation grants, as well as scholarships for HISD staff and students. We invite you to come out to our cocktail kickoff on November 9th from 5-7 at Old Town. Admission is free, however, donations to the education foundation would be greatly appreciated. You can find out more about giving and the HEF on the district website at https://www.hubbardisd.com/apps/pages/foundation
There is still so much more to share, and I encourage you to attend the next Coffee with the Superintendent on November 7th from 5-6 in the boardroom, where I can share updates on the Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA), district improvement plan, Texas Strategic Leadership (TSL), and academic updates to name a few items. I look forward to seeing you there.
In closing, it is an honor and privilege to serve you and this community as your Superintendent. Please know that I am here for you if you ever need anything. Go Jags!
Gifted And Talented Update!
Hubbard ISD Gifted and Talented Students (GT) will visit the Ross Perot Museum on December 2. Excited to provide these students with a great learning opportunity. Hubbard Education Foundation Cocktail Kickoff!
The Hubbard Education Foundation (HEF) would like to invite you to our cocktail kickoff celebration on November 9th from 5-7 at Old Town (Erler's Texas Tavern). This event is designed to celebrate the beginning of the HEF. We will be honoring donors who have donated at the Legend level as well as others. This event is free, however, please come prepared to make a contribution to the HEF, as we value donations of all sizes. We look forward to seeing you all there.
District Advisory Council
Hubbard ISD is a "District of Innovation" school district, which allows us to have one committee to oversee various operational aspects of our district. We will hold our Fall meeting on November 18th from 4:45-5:45. If you are interested in being part of the DAC, please email me at jturner@hubbardisd.org. To maintain committee size, acceptance will be first come first serve basis.
Elementary Updates
- The Elementary Campus held their annual Parent Mini Conference Night and ice cream social. The parent conferences are a huge success. This is something we initiated last year as part of our systematic approach to parental and community involvement. Thank you parents for your continued support of taking time to be present. We will hold another parent conference event in the Spring.
- Hubbard ES in conjunction with our fabulous PTO held the first "Atten-Dance" of the school year. It was a great success and students had a blast. Attendance is so important, and we thank you parents for getting your student to school each and every day.
- Our Character traits incentive with our school counselor has been amazing, our students are working hard on the designated trait each month. So far we have had respect and responsibility.
- We are also working on Line and lunchroom manners by earning compliment tickets that will earn a VERY big reward at the end of the year.
Secondary Updates
- The Secondary Campus held their annual parent conferences last week. It was a great success with teachers reaching 73% of parents. Campus administration also reached out to see if anyone that missed the conference wanted to circle back for that information. Really proud of our Secondary School and the parents for making these conferences a priority. I am a firm believer that when the school, parents, and community come together, anything is possible. Thank you all for your support.
- Reminder that the Fall Carnival will be held
Rush Hour Coffee with the Superintendent
Coffee with the Superintendent will take place on November 7th from 5-6 in the Boardroom. The boardroom is located in the high school. Children are welcome to attend with you.
