News From Nurse Kayla
October is Healthy Lung Month!
Healthy lungs are crucial to your well-being. Acute and long-term respiratory conditions can affect childrenโs lung health. The most common of these are influenza, asthma, bronchitis, croup and pneumonia. External factors that significantly affect our lungs are air pollution and tobacco use.
- Did you know that when your lungs are mature, the maximum amount of air they can hold is 6 liters? That equals around three large soda bottles!
- Did you know that our lungs are not fully mature until 20-25 years old? Children face special risks because their lungs are still growing and they are so active.
Here are 5 tips for ensuring your lungs grow and develop in a healthy way:
- Avoid using tobacco and exposure to second-hand smoke.
- Avoid air pollution (indoor and outdoor) as best as you can.
- Exercise regularly.
- Reduce your risk of infections by practicing good hand hygiene and staying up to date on vaccinations.
- Know when to see a doctor. Symptoms like wheezing, excessive coughing, and chronic respiratory infections should be reported to your physician.
Upcoming: Respiratory System Class (2nd-3rd grade)- taught by The Kansas Learning Center for Health (date to be determined)
