MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
It is an exciting day here at Fairview! We are eagerly awaiting our annual PTO Boo Bash this evening from 5:00-7:30 pm this evening. We hope you are able to join us! This morning, some police officers from the Mount Prospect Police Department welcomed our students at the start of the day for their annual Fist Bump Friday. Students have been hard at work in their classrooms as we are just a week away from the close of the first trimester. Teachers are excited to meet with parents at our annual parent-teacher conferences coming up on November 1st, 9th, and 16th. Fairview is full of activity as we continue to keep our students engaged in a variety of ways as well as partner with you to make our school a better place. We also have a lot coming up in the weeks ahead, so please take a moment to read through this week’s newsletter to stay up-to-date on all things Fairview. Thanks for reading and have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
Parent-Teacher Conferences: Wednesday, November 1st is our first day for parent-teacher conferences. This is a non-attendance day for students. If you haven’t signed up for a time yet, please use this link to do so. Conferences are also going to be held between 3:40-6:40 p.m. on Thursday, November 9th, and Thursday, November 16th. Let us know if you have any difficulty signing up so we can help you. We hope to see you at one of our conference days over the next few weeks!
Fairview Halloween Festivities: Our annual Halloween parade will take place on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. around the perimeter of our school grounds. If you are interested in seeing all of our students’ costumes on display, find a spot along the sidewalk anywhere around the Fairview property. Students will exit the main doors at 1:30 p.m., travel counterclockwise around the building, and enter the building through the main entrance. We anticipate the parade will last for approximately fifteen minutes. Our PTO-run classroom parties will begin at 2:00 p.m., so any parents who are signed up to help can check in at the office after the parade. As shared earlier this week, many families take their children home during the lunch hour to get changed into costumes. Please fill out this form before 2:00 pm on Monday if your child will be coming home during the lunch hour on Tuesday to change into their costume. Plan to pick your child up on the northeast side of the building at 11:35 a.m. You can park and meet your child face-to-face near grade-level doors or use our car line pick up using the north lot along Gregory. Do not pull into the actual bus turnaround for safety reasons. When students return at 12:45 p.m. they need to enter the school through our front entrance off of Isabella. Parents should drop their student(s) off in front of the school and direct them to enter the school on their own. We will have staff members signing students back in upon their return so there isn't a need for parents to enter the building with their student(s). If you have any Halloween-related questions, please call the office.
Erin’s Law Presentations: On Tuesday, November 7th and Wednesday, November 8th, Fairview students will participate in a 30-minute presentation delivered by Katherine Ciruelas, Fairview School Social Worker, to educate them in an age-appropriate way about the topic of childhood sexual abuse. These valuable presentations will teach students more about personal safety, safe vs. unsafe touches, safety steps to follow if someone breaks the touching rule, and good secrets vs. bad secrets. All District 57 Schools will participate in these presentations once again this school year in compliance with Erin’s Law, which mandates education about sexual abuse prevention for public school children in Illinois. All students will be included in the sexual abuse prevention programs unless a parent or guardian contacts me via email or phone to request that their child not participate (dophus@d57.org, 847-394-7320 x4012). Please do not hesitate to contact me or Ms. Ciruelas (kciruelas@d57.org), if you have any follow-up questions.
Opportunities to Help: We have two exciting opportunities that families can participate in this month to help people in our community and beyond. First, the PTO Fairview Cares Committee is holding a winter gear drive. Please see this flyer for more details and consider donating any new or gently used winter coats, snow pants, sweatshirts, gloves, mittens, scarves or boots to help families in need. Second, beginning on Monday, October 30th the Kindness Club is collecting books for Bernie's Book Bank. Bernie's Book Bank gives books to children who are unable to buy their own, which helps them build a home library. Books can be donated from October 30th - November 13th. The books should be in good condition and for children from preschool to 6th grade. Please no textbooks, workbooks, or dictionaries. Bins for books will be in the LRC. After Halloween, bins will also be in the front lobby. Email Mrs. Larson (clarson@d57.org) if you have any questions. Thank you for your help in supporting both of these worthy causes!

PTO Falcon Bowl Fundraiser: The Fairview PTO is excited to hold its Falcon Bowl fundraiser on Friday, November 10th. Students are encouraged to talk to their families and other relatives to get pledges and raise money to keep our Fairview PTO running strong. The goal is to raise $30,000 for the PTO in support of the wide variety of programs our PTO sponsors and to assist in purchases for our entire school. In previous years, the funds raised have helped fund the projector in our gymnasium and the new digital Fairview sign that is scheduled to be installed in front of the school within the next few weeks. There will be some exciting prizes for both the entire school and individual students to win as part of Falcon Bowl, and the fundraiser will culminate with a bowling extravaganza in PE classes on Friday, November 10th. All students will be assigned PE on that Friday even if they don't typically have it in their schedule. For more information, please review this link. To start donating, click here.
A Message from the D57 Teaching & Learning Department: Beginning next week, some of our amazing students and their teachers in kindergarten through 5th grade will be engaging in our District’s English Language Arts (ELA) pilot; a pilot is a period of time when we try out and compare new programs to figure out which one will be the best fit for next year and beyond. During this time, you may see new or different materials coming home and your students may want to share their excitement about being involved in the process. Here’s how it works: Based on important instructional features, input from parents and other teachers, and state requirements, we previewed four programs and selected two of those to try out, Benchmark Advance and HMH Into Learning. Participating teachers will engage their students in a unit from the first program lasting about five weeks. Then they will switch and engage in a unit from the second program for another five weeks. We are honored to have the following Fairview teacher leaders participating in this pilot: Rylee Tulloch (2nd Grade), Kacie O’Donnell (3rd Grade), Angela McElhattan (4th Grade), and Amanda Spenner (5th Grade). Thank you for all of the ways, seen and unseen, that you support your children and their learning.
Special Thanks: Thank you to Fairview PTO for providing all our staff with lunch from Avanti's Restaurant on Tuesday. Everything was delicious and it was a nice treat not have to pack a lunch that day. Also, we want to give a special shout-out to our friends at Threshold Martial Arts for their generous donation of school supplies to Fairview School this fall. They held a Back-to-School competition where supplies were donated and all of these donations were given to us to help students in need.
PICTURE RETAKE DAY
HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
Students should not come to school on Monday morning in their costume. Students will have an opportunity to get into their costumes if they will be staying at school for the lunch/recess period. See the above information about Halloween procedures if you want to pick your student(s) up during the lunch/recess time to get into their costume.
We would like to remind parents that look-alike guns, knives, and other violent objects which may be included with a Halloween costume are not permitted in the school building. If your child’s costume includes items of this nature, please leave them at home for trick-or-treat activities or other family excursions. We must provide the children a consistent message regarding objects which are considered dangerous and it is confusing to allow these items in school for any reason. Students’ costumes should always be age appropriate.
DRESS FOR OUTDOOR RECESS
As the weather turns cooler, please make sure your children are dressed to go out for recess. Unless it is raining or the temperature /wind chill is too cold (15 degrees or below, real-feel temperature) the students will go out every day for recess. Please write your student’s last name on a tag in their coat as we already have a lot of lost coats and sweatshirts.
All students will go out with their class unless we have a doctor’s note limiting their participation. If a student has been ill and he/she is not feeling well enough to participate in all the activities of the school day, perhaps another day at home will insure a healthy return to school.
See anything that looks familiar?
Please have your child check to see if any of their items are among our Lost and Found collection. After November 1st, any unclaimed items will be donated to a local charity.

REMINDER FROM NURSE BRUNNING
This is a reminder that all medication, including cough drops or other over the counter medications require a Medication Form to be filled out by your child's health care provider. Medication is then to be brought to the health office by an adult so the nurse can administer accordingly. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Kelly Brunning, school nurse at kbrunning@d57.org.
