A Message from Principal Branham
Aviators, I need your help. Since August, we have recorded 9,521 tardies at Centerville Elementary. Thatβs 9,521 times students have started their day behind, and itβs impacting not only those who are late but also their classmates and teachers. When students arrive late, they miss critical morning routines that set them up for success. Morning work, classroom meetings, and the first instructional moments of the day help students transition into learning mode. Arriving late means they start the day rushed and unprepared, which can affect their focus and confidence.
How Tardiness Affects Everyone:
π« Disrupts Learning β When a student enters late, it interrupts the teacher and classmates who have already started their lesson. This breaks the flow of learning for everyone.
β³ Misses Key Instruction β The first part of the school day often includes foundational instruction that sets the stage for later lessons. Missing even a few minutes daily adds up over time.
π Impacts Academic Success β Studies show that students who are frequently tardy often struggle with learning and performance. Consistency in routine leads to stronger academic outcomes.
π Creates Anxiety β Being late can cause stress for students. Walking into a classroom already in session can feel overwhelming and embarrassing.
π Leads to Bad Habits β Chronic lateness in elementary school can carry into middle and high school, leading to future attendance and responsibility challenges.
Staying for the Whole Day Matters, Too
Just as arriving on time is essential, staying until the final bell is just as important. Teachers plan meaningful lessons from start to finish, and early checkouts mean students miss closing discussions, instructions for homework, and important activities that help solidify their learning.
How to Be On Time Every Day
β
Establish a Consistent Bedtime β A well-rested child wakes up more easily in the morning.
β
Prepare the Night Before β Lay out clothes, pack backpacks, and have lunchboxes ready to go.
β
Set an Alarm β Make sure thereβs plenty of time to wake up, eat breakfast, and get ready.
β
Leave Early β Plan to leave home 10-15 minutes earlier to account for unexpected delays.
β
Use a School Morning Checklist β Create a simple checklist with tasks like brushing teeth, packing homework, and getting dressed.
β
Limit Screen Time in the Morning β Avoid distractions that slow down the getting-ready process.
Aviators, letβs commit to being on time, every day, and staying for the whole day! Success starts with showing up ready to soar. Thank you for working together to improve our punctuality and make every school day count!
π’ Challenge: Letβs work together to reduce tardies and build great habits! Families, we appreciate your help in making this a priority.
