Happy New Year! Today, we celebrate the joys and promise of a new year. While we may hold different hopes and dreams for 2019 -- personally and professionally -- this newsletter reflects our shared vision of global education for all K-12 students in California. With snapshots that capture the work and progress of the California Global Education Project in 2018 comes a sincere wish for peace, health, and happiness for everyone in 2019.


As we move forward in our efforts to bring global competence, social justice, environmental literacy, and equity into education programs, it is important to reflect on where we have been and what we are doing to achieve our goal to develop the potential in every global citizen. The organization formerly known as the California International Studies Project has experienced change, growth, and transformation during the past few years. We educate for a changing world and certainly feel the stress, fatigue, and excitement of change within our own network and subject matter. Change will continue to challenge and improve our work. Curiosity, persistence, and compassion will continue to guide our progress as the California Global Education Project.


We could not do this work without the dedication, leadership, and support of our regional directors, principal investigators, faculty advisors, advisory board members, consultants, grants officers, UCOP team, partners, and teacher leaders. Please know that we enter 2019 with sincere gratitude, courageous enthusiasm, and brilliant optimism. Thank you for being with us!

Reflections on 2018

Highlights

2018 was a busy year as we responded to challenges and opportunities, launched our new signature program, changed our name, and introduced global competence to as many educators as possible. Here are some of the highlights...

CGEP Leadership Retreat

January: Regional directors and teacher leaders gathered from around the state to meet in San Diego, retreat, and set a course for developing global competence in California schools.

CSMP Professional Support and Resource Faire: Rebuild, Restore, Reinvigorate

February: CSMPs worked together to support teachers in Sonoma County affected by the fires in October 2017. Resources were provided from statewide donations and CGEP workshops focused on stress, trauma, and resilience.

Carving a Path for Coaching

February: CGEP leaders explored the art of coaching, emotional resilience, and culturally responsive teaching with Elena Aguilar at Asilomar.

LeadLearn 2018

February: Civic responsibility was the theme for this year's CSMP LeadLearn Conference held at UC Davis. CGEP focused on the global competence domain "take action" and its work to promote student agency through engaging strategies and inquiry based practices.

With Literacy and Justice for All!

March: CGEP collaborated with the California Writing Project to present at the CATE pre-conference. The conference theme allowed us to share the intersections of global competence, literacy, and social justice.

CCSS gets Global

March: CGEP was "all over" the California Council for the Social Studies annual conference in San Diego with sessions filling the program and an active booth in the exhibit hall.

Teaching for Sustainable Communities

June-July: CGEP regional sites rolled out our new signature program, Teaching for Sustainable Communities: Empowering Eco-Literate Global Citizens. This CGEP signature program started as an idea proposed during strategic planning in January 2016, was developed and piloted in 2017, and is now offered at every CGEP site. Special thanks to the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation and Ten Strands for grant funds that make this program possible. Look for 2019 programs in your region!

World Languages and Global Competence

July: CGEP partnered with the California World Language Project to present global competence as the theme for the 2018 World Language Summer Seminar and establish a Global Competence Strand for the annual 5-day seminar.

Model Global Education Programs

August: As members of the California Global Education Network, CGEP and CWLP worked with CDE to present the Model Global Education Program in 2018. Three schools were awarded and now receive coaching support to build their model global education programs. Congratulations to Multicultural Learning Center (LA), Truckee Elementary, and Vista Heights (Moreno Valley).

Global Climate Action Summit

September: CGEP was proud to represent CSMP in planning and providing the Education Affiliate event at the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco. Educators from around the world were challenged to elevate their commitment to climate action and education.

National K12 Global Forum

September: CGEP participated in the first K12 Global Forum at George Washington University in Washington, DC. Gathering with global educators, researchers, and organizations at the U.S. Institute of Peace, the group discussed practices, resources, and opportunities for national global education efforts.

California STEAM Conference

October: CGEP shared the Global Book Bag program at the California STEAM Conference in Long Beach. Teachers were introduced to resources that help them achieve their STEAM goals while also introducing students to global themes, issues, and figures.

Changes to our CGEP Family

A Year of Change

In our work, we help educators learn how to help students navigate a world in constant movement. We want global citizens to persist through challenges, creatively solve problems, and find comfort in ambiguity and change. Understanding stress, building resilience, and mindfulness are some helpful practices. This year has presented a variety of opportunities for CGEP to learn and practice our own responses to change. We are both sad and happy to see colleagues move on. As we grow as an organization, we enthusiastically welcome new CGEP board members, regional directors, PIs, student workers, and teacher leaders. We celebrate the changes to our organization overall! Here is a look at some of this year's changes...

Best Wishes to Michelle

We said good-bye to two wonderful colleagues this year who contributed greatly to our vision for CGEP. Michelle Mazzeo left her position as regional director in July and is now working on her elementary teaching credential at Sonoma State. We wish her well in her studies and professional pursuits. Thank You to Rolland

We also said good-bye in December to CGEP@World Savvy Regional Director Rolland Janairo. Rolland is now Executive Director of the Silicon Valley Urban Debate League. We will miss him and remain grateful for his many contributions to our work. (Pictured here with Connie DeCapite)

Welcome to Nancy & Brooke

We were happy to welcome the new CGEP@Sonoma State Regional Director, Nancy Case Rico, in July. Nancy dove right into her new position and has been learning while growing her regional network. (Pictured here with Emily Schell)

Welcome to Rod

This year, we welcomed educator Rod Septka to the CGEP Advisory Board representing the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Rod is the Mill Valley School District Global Studies Coordinator/Coach and earned the World Savvy Global Competence Certificate while teaching at Mill Valley Middle School.

Congratulations to Stephanie

This year, CGEP Program Manager Stephanie Duran earned her M.Ed. in Counseling at San Diego State University. While skillfully managing our statewide office and supporting regional sites with programs, she successfully completed her pursuit of this advanced degree. We could not be more proud! Welcome to Dr. Chung

The CGEP Statewide Office, located at San Diego State University, has a new Principal Investigator. Dr. Y. Barry Chung is the new College of Education Dean and now supports our statewide CGEP programs and educators.

Two Partners Merge

The California Geographic Alliance has supported K-12 teachers in our state for as long as CGEP -- since 1985. CGEP has been working closely with the CGA Director Tom Herman to merge our organizations and provide a united front to K-12 educators in California that global and geographic education matter. Working together, we now transition from the History-Social Science Framework Rollout workshops to the CLIC (Content, Literacy, Inquiry, Citizenship) statewide Community of Practice and regional professional learning events. Look for more programs and information in 2019!

CGEP Replaces CISP

For 33 years, the California International Studies Project provided professional development in world history and cultures, international studies, and global issues. Renamed the California Global Education Project in April 2018, our professional learning programs are focused on global competence, UN Sustainable Development goals, environmental literacy, cultural identity and social justice, geography, and issues of local and global significance.

Welcome to Rhianna and Tom

Evaluator Rhianna Maras joined the CGEP team this year and is helping us to refine, administer, and use our evaluations to determine our effectiveness and make better decisions about our work. CGA Director Tom Herman joined the CGEP team with the CGA/CGEP merger. We have already learned much from these two and look forward to working with them in 2019.
