Hump Day Happenings

This newsletter is a weekly publication available every Wednesday to our Kilgour community. If you have information to share with our school community, including upcoming events and activities please email details to RC1 by 4pm on Mondays.

This week at Kilgour our 3rd graders completed OST (Ohio State Testing). OSTs measure what your child knows and can do based on Ohio’s Learning Standards. They help teachers target areas of improvement and where they need to support students. This helps teachers better prepare students for success in school.

This round of OSTs covered English Language Arts and was given in 2 parts. Students completed part 1 on 10/24 and part 2 on 10/26. Schools are given a range of dates that the testing needs to be completed during. Some schools choose to test on consecutive days. When possible, Kilgour designs our testing schedule to allow our students a mental break between parts for multi-part testing. This is the reason for the gap between parts 1 and 2.

If your student was absent for any part of the testing, don't worry. Make up testing will be provided for students that were unable to complete testing.

In addition to the 3rd graders completing OST, our 6th grade students completed CogAT and IOWA testing this week. These test are used to determine students admissibility to Walnut Hills High School and Spencer Center for Gifted and Exceptional Students.

Every 6th grade student currently enrolled in a CPS school takes the WHEE (Walnut Hills Entrance Exam) at their school during the school day in the Fall. For students that do not receive qualifying scores in the Fall, there is an optional second opportunity at the students' school of enrollment during the month of February. Registration for a retake is required. Registration instructions will be provided with the student’s scores from the Fall testing opportunity.

This past Tuesday Kilgour hosted 16 students from our neighbor high school, Clark Montessori during their week of service. The Clark students spent time with students in kindergarten and 1st grade. They assisted teachers with things like stations, reading with students and even took part in recess. The Clark students were with us for just a few hours; however, several of the younger students grew quite attached and were a little sad when the "big" kids had to go. Some of the Clark students were sad to go too. They really seemed to enjoy the playground more than little kids.

On Tuesday, October 31, 2023 the Harvest Parade will start at 1:45 p.m. for grades K-3 followed by classroom parties until 3:15 p.m.

From 2:00-3:15 p.m. 4th-6th grade students will dance to jams by DJ NewNu while snacking and celebrating Fall! Let's help make this year's Harvest Jam a huge success by donating your time and/or some tasty treats.

Things to keep in mind when attending the festivities:

• Parking lots are for Staff ONLY
• If parking in front of the school you MUST move your vehicle by 3:20 to make way for dismissal and the car rider line up
• Students leaving early with their parent/guardian MUST follow early dismissal procedures (I.e. make sure the office is aware of any students leaving prior to dismissal time)
• All volunteers must wear their volunteer badge while on campus or sign in at the front office using the Lobby Guard system

Reminder

Costume Closet for the Costume Parade (K-3) & Harvest Jam (4-6)

• A free Costume Closet is available 10/30 & 10/31. If you are interested in utilizing this resource, make sure you talk to your student ahead of the School Social Worker coming to your student’s classroom! No sign up required.

• Donations of gently used costumes accepted prior to 10/30

To allow families and our club leaders an opportunity to prepare for their Halloween festivities, the following afterschool clubs will not meet on Tuesday, 10/31.

• Visual Arts K-3
• Ukulele 4th-6th
• Theatre K-3

Clubs will resume as normal on Wednesday, 11/1.

Kilgour's 4th-6th grade performers in partnership with Performing Arts, Inc have been hard at work on their production of Willy Wonka Kids. They will have 3 performances for the school community, families and friends. Ticket sales were conducted through the performers. However, there will be tickets available for purchase at the door at $5 each.

Performance Dates & Times:

• 10/31 School-wide performance (No visitors please)

• 11/01 1st Family & Friends performance 6pm in the Kilgour gym

• 11/02 Encore Family & Friends performance 6pm in the Kilgour gym

Our students have really taken this production seriously. This is a show you don't want to miss!

As a result of low volunteer numbers and a high volume of similar activities happening around the community, we have made the decision to cancel Trunk or Treat and postpone Family Movie Night. Family Movie Night will be rescheduled to a future date that is yet to be determined. Our families appeared to have various events competing for their time. Rather than be an additional burden on schedules, we've decided to gracefully bow out of the competition. We will regroup and plan for another amazing event on a less demanding Friday night.

THANK YOU to those that volunteered. We hope this information comes with enough notice for you to still enjoy a fabulous pre-Halloween event elsewhere in the community.
