National Art Honor Society State Conference
On March 16, Lina Mooney and Andrew McMichael represented AC Flora at the National Art Honor Society State Conference. NAHS students from South Carolina attended the event at Costal Carolina University. The conference included keynote speakers and hands-on workshops in metal working, photography, digital art, and sculpture. Please see photos.
Math Team Competition
On March 23, the A. C. Flora Math Team competed in the 37th Annual USC High School Math Contest, taking home 3rd place out of 12 teams from around the state. Additionally, Siqi Liu placed in the top 16 of all individual competitors. All year the math team has been committed to challenging themselves beyond the classroom, so we are proud to see their hard work pay off. Congratulations!
Team Members: Grady Zimmerman (12), Jackson Butler (11), Brooks Ransom (11), Alex Virzi (11), Jonathan Ye (11), Anna Claire McCain (10), and Siqi Liu (10)
Model UN Conference
The AC Flora Model United Nations delegation took part in the 48th annual Winthrop University Model United Nations Conference held from March 20 to 22, 2024. Leading up to the event, students thoroughly researched the countries they represented—Afghanistan, Austria, and Tanzania. Throughout the conference, these delegates engaged in discussions spanning various critical issues such as Artificial Intelligence, the utilization of drones for humanitarian aid delivery, Internet accessibility in developing nations, cyberterrorism, international maritime trade, military aggression, and technological approaches to mitigate climate change.
Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of the United Nations where students role-play as delegates representing different countries to discuss and address global issues. Through debate and negotiation, participants work towards crafting resolutions to tackle real-world problems within the framework of international diplomacy.

International Day
On March 20th, we celebrated Flora’s annual International Day. Our students gathered in an assembly to watch a parade of flags, international fashion show, and a performance by the ACF chorus, as well as traditional dances performed by Ms. Alvarez’s Spanish 3 class and other students.
For lunch, students could choose from a variety of international foods provided by the French Club, German Club, Spanish Club, Baking Club, Kindness Club, National Art Society, National Honor Society, Student Council and Ms. Laird’s and Ms. Potter’s classes.
We raised over $6500 dollars, which will be donated to four international charities: Heifer International, UNICEF, Doctors without Borders, and World Vision for Ukrainian Children.
A big thank you to all the faculty, staff and students who helped make this year’s Flora International Day a success! Please see photos below.
Engineering Students Explore USC College of Engineering and Computing
On Wednesday, March 27, a group of seniors and juniors from the Pre-Engineering program visited the University of South Carolina's College of Engineering and Computing. This was part of the USC LEAD program. Throughout the day, our students were immersed in activities designed to ignite their passion and curiosity for the fields of engineering and computing. From engaging in hands-on project-based learning sessions to embarking on a comprehensive tour of the USC campus, every moment was carefully curated to maximize their exposure and learning.
The presenters and tour guides commended our students for their insightful inquiries and meaningful engagement throughout the sessions. This commendation underscores the depth of curiosity and intellectual prowess demonstrated by AC Flora's aspiring engineers. Notably, two of our seniors, Jordan Nostrant and Jacob Brown Nelson, have already committed to furthering their engineering education at USC, commencing this fall.
A highlight of the day was the opportunity for our students to delve into in-depth discussions with current engineering students at USC. This firsthand interaction provided invaluable insights into the rigors and rewards of pursuing studies in engineering. The visit also shed light on various career pathways and work/study opportunities available in collaboration with esteemed companies such as Boeing and Nucor. Please see photos.
