A Note From Mrs. Howard...
As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, we welcome October with enthusiasm and anticipation! This month brings not only the beauty of autumn but also a host of exciting activities and important events for our students and families.
Upcoming Events...
1. Parent Teacher Conferences:
Mark you calendars for our parent teacher conferences on October 9th & 10th. This is a valuable chance to meet with your child’s teachers, discuss their progress, and collaborate on strategies for success. We encourage all parents to sign up by going to Skyward Family Access and selecting a time that will work for you.
2. Red Ribbon Week
Norwich SADD has planned many awareness activities for the week of October 28-31st. Student will have the opportunity to learn the meaning behind Red Ribbon week, participate in a coloring contest,
and understand the affects that vaping and alcohol can have on our bodies.
3. Fire Safety
We are so fortunate to have a local volunteer fire department that prioritizes teaching about fire safety every year to our Pk-2nd grade students. This year on October 10th students will ride the fire truck to the fire station where they will learn more about the dangers of fire and what to do in an emergency. Students will also participate in a coloring contest. Thank you so much to our community volunteers for providing this experience for our Norwich students!
4. Halloween Celebrations
The annual K-5 Halloween parade will be held Thursday, October 31st. The parade will start at 9:00 a.m. in the Nest gym with our 6th graders announcing. We would love for the whole community to come out and enjoy seeing the kids in their costumes! Class parties will immediately follow the parade back in the classrooms.
5. Academic Focus
This month we will be focusing on active student engagement in the classroom. We will teach students what it looks like to be an active learner. This will help students in many areas of their academic success!
6. Track Installation
The track has been torn out and the prep for asphalt patching is underway. It has been interesting to watch this process. The next two weeks are scheduled for patching the asphalt and the install of the new track will begin the week of October 21st. If all goes as planned the installation should be completed by October 30th.
Contacting the Office
Is your child sick or plans have changed during the day? If you need to contact the school office for any reason by email, please use our new email address norwichoffice@knusd331.com. This will help us get messages to your child when there are substitutes in the office for the day.
NEW LUNCH ROOM CHARGING PROCEDURE
Board policy allows students and staff to charge up to $15.00. Once they have charged $15.00, the policy dictates that we provide an alternative meal (in our case, this is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich).
Each Monday parents will receive a text and email when any payor account balance is $10.00 or less.
Once your account is negative you will receive daily texts, emails and/or phone calls to make arrangements for bringing your account current, as well as a reminder to send lunches from home.
Norwich Eagle Booster Club
Norwich Eagle Booster Club is selling smoked hams again this year. The hams will be delivered November 23-25 (right before Thanksgiving). Whole hams are $65 and half hams are $40. Please let a Booster Club member know if you would like to order.
Counselor's Corner
Welcome October! Here is a description of our SEL focus:
October is also the month of Red Ribbon Week
The Red Ribbon Campaign is the largest drug-abuse prevention campaign in the United States.
The theme this year is:
Fall Assessments!
Two national assessments will be given in the month of October. Our 9th graders will be taking the PreAct on October 2nd and our Juniors will take the ACT-Workkeys assessment on October 30th.
PreACT
The PreACT is a slightly shorter, slightly easier exam designed to help students prepare for the official ACT exam by simulating the test and testing experience. The PreACT is a paper-and-pencil test consisting of multiple-choice sections for English, Math, Reading, and Science.
ACT-Workkeys
This test asks students to solve actual workplace problems. Unlike other assessments, they don't simply give an indication of reading, math and writing competency. Instead, they measure a range of hard and soft skills relevant to any occupation, at any level, and across industries.
This is NOT to be confused with the ACT! That one will be given to juniors in the spring.
Spotlight on Community Resources
Have you heard? Kingman-Norwich Schools has a new resource for our families!
Presumptive Eligibility is a program through Medicaid (Kancare) that provides individuals with temporary Medicaid coverage while KanCare processes their application for Medicaid. If you(or a loved one) have lost your insurance, or need help applying for Kancare, give us a call and ask for Lydia Loveland.
We can make Presumptive Eligibility determinations for: Pregnant Women, Children, Former Foster Care, Breast or Cervical Cancer (BCC) patients currently receiving treatment, parents & other caretakers.
The really neat thing about Presumptive Eligibility [PE] is, if approved, you can walk out with coverage the same day. If you have already applied for Kancare, PE can cover you until the application is processed. If you haven’t applied for Kancare, we can submit that application at the same time. If your loved one already has primary insurance (Like VA or Medicare) but needs a secondary insurance, we can talk about that, too.
Learn more about Presumptive Eligibility by clicking here, or by calling your school and asking for Lydia Loveland. PE Flyer

PROCEDURES TO FOLLOW FOR AN EXCUSED ABSENCE
When a student is absent, in order for the absence to be classified excused, the following procedure is to be used:
1. Parents or guardians are asked to phone the school by 8:30 a.m. the day of the absence informing the school’s
representative of the student’s reason for being absent.
2. If the school does not receive a call by 8:30 a.m. on the day of the absence, the school makes every attempt to contact
the parents or guardians during that school day.
3. In the event that phone contact is not made during school hours that day of the absence, on the day the student returns
to school, the student should bring a written note from the parent or guardian that explains the absence.
4. When the student returns to school from being absent, other than from a school activity, the student must report to the main office for an admit slip.
5. The student will have 24 hours from the time the unexcused absence is issued to provide either written or verbal communication from the parent excusing the absence. If no communication is received within this time, the absence will remain unexcused.
