SmartPass - Streamlining the Movement of Students
Dear Lake Denoon Families,
This week, we rolled out SmartPass, a digital hall pass platform. We elected to bring this platform to Lake Denoon because we believe it will have a positive impact on the day-to-day flow of our classrooms and school.
The most valuable element of the school day is instructional time in the classroom. When a student is not in class, they are not learning and their peers miss out on their contributions to the learning environment. And while there will always be a need to move within the building during class, we want students to be timely in their movement to maximize their opportunity to learn. We recognize that there will be times that students are out of the classroom beyond the allotted time for legitimate reasons. Rest assured that when this happens, their teacher will check in to learn more from the student. In the event a pattern develops over time, further problem solving conversations may be needed but those will be few and far between.
SmartPass also streamlines the hall pass process. Students most often request a pass during the segment of the class when they are working independently or collaboratively. That is also when teachers are working with skill groups or conferring with students. Rather than students coming to the small instruction table and waiting, they can now request a pass from their Chromebook and their teacher can approve it without interrupting the work they are doing with students. This allows for a more efficient flow of students and less interruptions to classroom instruction.
When students are picked up early from school, students no longer need to remember to pick up their paper pass from Student Services. Our administrative assistants schedule the pass within SmartPass allowing the student leaving early and their teacher, at the time they will be leaving, to see that they have a “future” pass. This will streamline the communication loop, reduce phone calls into the classroom to remind students that many have forgotten to grab their paper pass and increase the likelihood of students being ready for pick up at the designated time.
It is important to note that SmartPass informs us who is in the hallway at any given time and their destination (locker, restroom, library, Student Services Office, classroom, etc.). The system does not track the exact location of students.
If you have any questions about SmartPass, feel free to reach out to us.

Gathering Student Input
Prior to Winter Break, our students completed the Student Engagement Survey. This is their yearly opportunity to provide feedback on how we are doing in relation to their school experience. We recently received the results and wanted to learn more from our students to ensure that we plan informed action steps. To gather this information, we held optional listening sessions during lunch periods.
Students that attended reviewed and provided the following information:
- On our three highest survey items, students provided a list of actions we should continue doing to ensure these survey items remain high on the list.
- On our three lowest survey items, students provided a list of actions we should start doing to increase our score in those areas.
Their input was greatly appreciated and will be shared with the staff in the near future. Look to next week's LDMS Family Newsletter for the results from our Student Engagement Survey!
Quarter 2 Report Cards
Quarter 2 report cards will be posted in Infinite Campus at 3pm today. If you wish to receive a paper copy, please email Nikki Vullings at nicole.vullings@muskegonorway.org.
Timberwolf Study Den Sign-Up
Timberwolf Study Den is an after-school club held on Wednesdays and Thursdays in Mrs. Rappis' room from 3:05 to 4:00 PM. It provides a quiet, focused environment for students to complete homework, with the possibility of receiving additional help. Each session is supervised by two advisors, along with National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) volunteers, who are available to assist when they are familiar with the content. Club Expectations: If students are interested, they should fill out this form with the date(s) they plan on attending so that advisors know how many students to expect. There's also a spot to indicate whether or not they will be looking for help with any homework. This will help us to pair up students with a teacher or older student who may know the content best. If you have any questions regarding this club, please reach out to Nikki Kamperschroer at nicole.kamperschroer@muskegonorway.org.

Proper Chromebook Care
We have recently seen some unique damage to Chromebooks that we want to bring to your attention of our families. Attached is a picture of the most common intentional damage we are experiencing. This is the result of the panel that rests between the keys of the keyboard being intentionally peeled off. This is not something that is easy to do or can happen accidentally. This damaged keyboard costs $90 to replace. Please take a moment to talk with your student about proper Chromebook care.
Please remember that the Chromebook belongs to the district and your student is borrowing it while at Lake Denoon. Purchasing the insurance does not cover intentional damage, please see the Muskego Norway Chromebook Service Plan.
Please contact Monica Keough or Amy Kounelis x7407 with any questions or concerns.
