Message from the Principal
Welcome to the third week of school year 2024-2025!
I want to share that Mrs. Dana Gallis, Caln's Administrative Assistant to the Principal, will be leaving us at the end of this week. Please be sure to reach out to her if you have any unanswered registration questions and concerns or to just say farewell. We appreciate all that Mrs. Gallis has done for everyone at Caln and we will miss her dearly. Therefore, we will be welcoming Ms. Gail Dadd this Tuesday as Mrs. Gallis' substitute until a new secretary is hired. Ms. Dadd worked at North, so she comes to us filled with CASD pride!
This is a friendly reminder that if you are dropping off your child(ren) late to school, then an adult must enter the building to state the reason for the tardiness and have the child(ren) safely signed in at the office. We appreciate your attention to this procedure.
Last week, I shared a brief one pager detailing our school improvement goals for this school year. I have made a few slight changes. Please take a moment to read what we will be focusing on at Caln.
We look forward to seeing all parents and guardians at our Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 26th at 6:00PM. Please review the schedules and plan accordingly.
Grades K-2 Parent Schedule:
6:00-6:30 Meet The Principal, School Counselor, Reading Specialist & more in the gym
6:30-7:00 Session I Meet The Teacher
7:00-7:30 Session II Meet The Teacher
7:30-8:00 Meet the Related Arts Team & PTA
Grades 3-5 Parent Schedule:
6:00-6:30 Session I Meet The Teacher
6:30-7:00 Meet The Principal, School Counselor, Reading Specialist & more in the gym
7:00-7:30 Meet the Related Arts Team & PTA
7:30-8:00 Session II Meet The Teacher
This will be a time where our teachers will be sharing important information about your child's grade level and curriculum with a focus on collaboration between staff and families. It is best to come to this event without your child(ren) so that everyone can hear the important information being shared and since all parents and guardians must supervise their children at the event. We cannot wait for you to join us.
A few very important reminders:
- School Hours: Students' instructional day begins at 9:15 am and dismissal begins at 3:45pm. During the first week of school, we expect the traffic to take longer and appreciate your patience to drive slowly and carefully in the school zone. Please remember to remain in your vehicle when dropping students off and picking students up from school. No student can be dropped off at the front of the building before school hours.
- Main Office Hours: The main office hours are 8:30 am - 4:15 pm. Please remember that our office is extremely busy at this time of the school year. It is best to call before visiting the office and our busiest times are during the hours of 8:30 - 10:30 AM and 2:30 - 4:00 PM, especially the first week of school. Please remember that we must work together to ensure the safety of our students and that we follow all district rules and regulations pertaining to custody arrangements and such.
- Early Dismissal: A note/email should be sent in the morning to CNAttendance@casdschools.org. The note for early dismissals should contain:
Student Name/Teacher/Date and Time of Dismissal/Reason/Name of Adult picking up and relationship/Parent Signature and parent daytime phone#. It is very important to get these notes into your child's teacher or to the main office as early as possible but definitely prior to 2:00 pm.
All early dismissals should be completed at the main office by 3:15. Students must be signed out by then. Any dismissal change requests taking place after 3:15 will be in the parent pick-up line or may be declined for the safety of our students.
The adult picking up any child must bring a government issued Photo ID (preferably a driver’s license) and be listed as a parental or emergency contact.
Refillable water bottles: Caln has transitioned to bottle filling stations. Students should bring a refillable water bottle to school.
Transportation: You should have already received bus information. A nationwide bus driver shortage is impacting many districts, including Coatesville, and may lead to increased delays. Buses normally run late the first two weeks of school as students and drivers become accustomed to their routes. We appreciate your patience. Students must follow the rules of the bus, listen to the drivers and be respectful to the drivers.
Parent-Pick-Up Notes: Thank you for having patience with us as we work to make our afternoon dismissal more efficient. If your child needs to be picked up for an early dismissal or rides a school bus, please help us with this by sending a parent pick-up note into school with your child(ren) or email cnattendance@casdschools.org.
Student First Day Back-to-School Folders: Each student will be bringing home important folders which will contain important information to read (on the left-hand side) and important information to read, Sign and Return (on the right-hand side). Please be sure to return all signed paperwork by Friday, Sept., 13th.
School Calendars: Start planning ahead! This year, we have provided a Caln Events Calendar to each student (in the folders) and I will add each month's events to the weekly news. Please check out Can's website for more important information.
Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS): We practice 3 important expectations at Caln: RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY & SAFETY.
Best,
Dr. Lennon

CALN ELEMENTARY REMEMBERS SEPTEMBER 11th ON WEDNESDAY led by Mrs. DiPiano, Music
September 11th, known as Patriot Day, is a time for us to come together as a community to honor and remember those who lost their lives and the heroes who showed extraordinary courage during this tragic event in our nation's history. At Caln Elementary, we use this day as an opportunity to teach our children about the importance of compassion, unity, and resilience. As we reflect on this day, we encourage families to have age-appropriate conversations with their children about the significance of remembering and supporting one another during challenging times, and to foster a spirit of kindness and empathy in their daily lives. At school on Wednesday, September 11 we will be holding a Patriot ceremony commemorating this day with a moment of silence and the children are learning the Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful to be performed as a school outside by the flag pool at 10:00AM. Scouts and Girl Scouts are asked to wear their uniforms and we ask that students dress in patriotic colors of red, white, and blue.
