2024-2025
BACK TO SCHOOL UPDATE
We look forward to seeing all parents who can make it tonight at our Open House where you will meet your student's teachers (Schedule below). Also, we are excited to see all 9th grade students and newly enrolled students on Tuesday, September 3rd. We have new information regarding the state mandated cell phone policy requirements that we appreciate your attention to detail in prepping your student before school begins. Students will no longer be able to access their cell phone during class time. Please read below for more details on the new cell phone policy and other important school information.
Respectfully,
Principal Shaun Murphy
OPEN HOUSE TONIGHT
CELL PHONE PROCEDURES
CELL PHONE PROCEDURES
We wanted to take a moment to inform you about an important change we are making regarding cell phone usage at our school. After careful consideration and review of recent research, we have decided to implement a new cell phone procedure to better support the well-being and academic success of our students. The state of Minnesota also has new legislation which requires school districts to adopt a policy on students’ possession and use of cellphones in school in order to minimize the impact of cell phones on student behavior, mental health, and academic attainment. Minn. Stat. § 121A.73 will expect each school district to have a district policy in place by 1/1/2025. Our school board is currently working on the official district policy.
Recent studies have shown that excessive cell phone use can have significant impacts on children, including reduced attention span, increased anxiety, and difficulties in social interactions. These effects are particularly concerning in a school environment, where focus, mental health, and positive social engagement are crucial to student success. To address these issues, our procedures will focus on minimizing distractions and promoting a healthier, more focused learning environment. We believe that by reducing the presence of cell phones during school hours, we can help our students develop better concentration, stronger interpersonal skills, and a more positive attitude towards learning.
Our new procedures will not allow phones in class from bell to bell. Students are allowed to use their phones during passing time, before and after school, and during lunch.
We understand that cell phones are an important tool for communication, and we will ensure that you will have access to contacting your student in case of an emergency. We are requesting that parents/caregivers utilize the school phone number (952-232-3300) to relay any messages that may be urgent in nature for your student, rather than call or text students on their cell phones during class time. The office will relay the message to students in a prompt manner.
During the first week of school, cell phone guidelines will be reviewed with all students. Teachers will redirect any student not adhering to the guidelines. Continued misuse of personal electronics will result in behavior interventions based on our Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) framework. See below more more information.
1st Offense- 1:1 conversation with student and teacher.
2nd Offense- 1:1 conversation with student and teacher. The teacher will hold the phone for the remainder of the class period and return at the end of the period.
3rd Offense- 1:1 conversation with student and teacher. The phone will be brought to office where it will be locked up until the end of the day. The student will pick up the phone from the Assistant Principal in Student Services.
4th Offense-1:1 conversation with student and teacher. The phone will be brought to office where it will be locked up until the end of the day. The parent must come to pick up the phone from the Assistant Principal in Student Services and a family meeting will be scheduled.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to create the best possible environment for our students to thrive. These procedures are subject to change upon school board approval of new policy.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
The new first day of school plan will allow 9th grade students to meet their LINK Crew leaders and get acclimated to Lakeville South. Students who may be sensitive to large crowds, may enter the upper lot, athletic entrance, on this day. Staff will be there to greet them and direct them to the appropriate area.
Students newly enrolled to Lakeville South are welcome to attend on Tuesday, beginning at 10:00am. These students should meet in the Commons near the front entrance.
10th-12th grade students who are not in LINK Crew will log on to Schoology for an asynchronous learning day. LINK Crew students will be exempt from the first day assignment. Students should go to their Class of Schoology page to complete an online attendance form for the day.
New Daily Bell Schedule
Lakeville South and North High Schools will have a new bell schedule this school year to accommodate a WIN (What I need) period and advisory (Cougar Time) every school day. This 30 minute daily period was added at both high schools in response to the student daily desired experiences shared during the last stakeholder survey. This time will be used to share important school announcements, work on college and career readiness, have time for social and emotional wellness activities, as well as offer students academic support during the school day.
