Message from the Principal
Dear Families,
What a joy it was to celebrate our students' hard work and accomplishments at the end-of-trimester celebrations in March! The energy and enthusiasm were truly infectious. A huge thank you to our parent volunteers whose time and dedication made these events so special.
With the final trimester of the 2024-25 school year upon us, we are committed to fostering continued student growth and learning. Your continued partnership is essential, especially as we navigate the busy spring season.
In April, we will be exploring the character trait of courage. According to Character Strong, courage is "choosing what is helpful, right, and kind even when it’s hard or scary." We encourage you to support your child in developing this important trait by using the resources we have provided below.

Explorations
🌞 Kindergarten – Be Prepared
Kindergarteners are kicking off Be Prepared with an exciting look at the Sun! We’ll investigate how the Sun warms the Earth, changes the temperature of different surfaces, and affects the way we dress and play outside. Through hands-on activities, students will explore why some surfaces feel hotter than others and how shadows move throughout the day.
🦉 First Grade – Animal Reporters & Shadow Town
First graders will wrap up Animal Reporters by designing their own communication devices based on how animals use sounds, colors, and body movements to send messages. Then, we’ll journey to Shadow Town, where students will explore how light travels, what causes shadows to form, and how they change depending on the time of day and position of the light source.
🌿 Second Grade – A Garden for Life
Our young botanists will continue A Garden for Life by learning what plants need to grow, why gardens are important for people and wildlife, and how different habitats support life. Later in the month, we’ll shift our focus to pollinators, where students will discover how bees, butterflies, and even bats help plants reproduce and why these creatures are essential to a healthy ecosystem.
🦋 Third Grade – Welcome to the Biodome
This month, third graders will begin Welcome to the Biodome! We’ll dive into the life cycles of plants and animals, studying how living things grow and change over time. One of the highlights of this unit will be raising caterpillars and observing their incredible transformation into butterflies, helping students see metamorphosis up close!
🌎 Fourth Grade – Geographical Investigations
Fourth graders are continuing their Geographical Investigations, shifting their focus to human impacts on the environment. We’ll explore how people change landscapes by building cities, farming, and using natural resources. Through maps, case studies, and discussions, students will consider the challenges of balancing human needs with environmental sustainability.
⚖️ Fifth Grade – The American Revolution
Fifth graders will continue their study of the American Revolution, examining major events like the Declaration of Independence and the role of key figures in shaping the new nation. We’ll explore how the ideas and principles from this time influenced the creation of the U.S. government and continue to impact our country today. Students will consider how the founding principles still influence the way laws are made and how citizens participate in democracy.
Library
April is National School Library Month! We will celebrate by sharing fun read-alouds, STEM challenges, and library games! April is also National Poetry Month, so students will be learning about and reading all kinds of poetry. Students in grades 3-5 have been learning how to use our online library catalog to search for and locate books in our library.
This month, the Star of the North and Maud Hart Lovelace book award winners will finally be announced! Students in grades K-2 have read the nominated books together and each student voted for the book they thought was most deserving of the award. Any student in grades 3-5 who read at least three of the ten nominated Maud Hart Lovelace books also voted last week. We are anxiously waiting for the results! If your child would like to watch at home, the winning books will be announced via a livestream on the Minnesota Youth Reading Awards YouTube page. The livestream is scheduled for 9am on April 26th!
Music
This April, kindergarten, first, and second grade students will start to use the notes and rhythms they have learned to create and perform their own songs. Third grade students are still working on their own songs and have already tried them out on the xylophones. Our fourth graders are practicing their concert music for their performances on May 13, and fifth grade will start to learn the ukulele.
PE
We will finish up nutrition, food groups, and balanced meals. We will then start to prepare for the Olympics. MAY 9th!!! This includes paddle skills, teamwork, race etiquette, and sportspersonship.
Always gym shoes, please!

Parent Education and Family Engagement
Mindfulness can be an important tool for both parents and children to practice in order to support healthy relationships and coping strategies. When parents practice mindfulness, it is easier for children to pick up those same strategies. Our newsletter has strategies for children and families alike, to support mindfulness this spring!
