It's Finally Time! First Week of School!
Happy Monday Nixon Families,
This week is the kickoff to our first week of school! Classes begin on August 23--don't forget it's an early dismissal day (2:20 dismissal). Below are your updates for the week:
- Nixon Open House: The Nixon Open House is being held TONIGHT between 4:00-6:00 pm. This event is a time to meet your child's teacher, drop off school supplies, and check out your child's classroom.
- School Supplies: If you haven't already gone shopping, that's not a problem! We have many school supplies that have been donated to Nixon and we can help get you covered. If you still need supplies, we'll have a "school supply shop" set up in our Learning Lab. There you can grab everything you'll need to bring to the classrooms.
- Books to Take Home: Along with our school supplies, we have a mountain of pre-owned books we'd love to find a home for in our Learning Lab. Please be sure to stop up and take as many books home as you would like! After tonight, they will be donated.
- Breakfast and Lunch at No Cost: This year, we will continue to offer breakfast and lunch at no cost to all families. Please reach out to our main office with any questions.
- Annual Verification: If you have not already done so, please take some time to complete your Annual Verification in Infinite Campus. You are able to update addresses, phone numbers, complete permission forms, and pay school fees online. If you need help with your parent username or password, please call our front office for support (558-2188, M-F 8:00am-3:00pm)
- Who is my child's teacher?: At Open House tonight (4:00-6:00 pm), we will have class lists posted at the front of the school. We will also have staff around to help you figure out your child's homeroom teacher, as well as where to locate the rooms.
- First Day of School: Our first official day of school is August 23. It will be an early dismissal day (2:20pm dismissal). If you are planning on having your children eat breakfast at school, please drop them off between 8:30-8:45 am. No children should arrive to Nixon prior to 8:30 am. If learners are brought early, we will contact parents or have them wait in the car until 8:30 am. All learners need to be at school by 8:50am when we begin our day. Anyone arriving after 8:50am will be marked tardy and need a pass from the front office.
- Friday Early Dismissals: For families new to the Cedar Rapids Schools, I want to make you aware that EVERY Friday of the school year we have an early dismissal from school. Learners are dismissed EVERY FRIDAY between 2:15-2:20pm. If you have any questions about this, please call our front office. The first week of school, we will have TWO early dismissals (Wednesday August 23 and Friday August 25). Please plan accordingly and reach out with any questions.
- Drop off/Pick Up: Our primary goal at Nixon is to create a safe learning environment for all children, and this begins with our car drop off in the morning and ends when the last child is picked up from school. Knowing safety is our number one priority, we try and keep our drop off and pick up streamlined for families.
When you drop off your child in the morning, please drive into the Nixon Circle and pull along the curb. Do not double park and be sure you stay inside your vehicle. Be sure to have your child exit the vehicle on the passenger side of the car. Drop off begins at 8:30 am.
For end of the day pick up, please view the video tutorial below. We will begin dismissing car riders at 3:50 pm on full days of school, 2:20 pm on early dismissal days. If you drive up in your vehicle, but want to skip the line, please park your car in our parking lot or on the road near Nixon and walk up to the building to collect your child. If you park and walk up, your child is now considered a "Walker" and will be dismissed from the building around 3:45pm. We will NOT allow children to cross our circle or the road without an adult present.
We are so excited for our first week back to school. I hope you have enjoyed your summers and the time with your children!
