Supe Scoop
Hornet Nation,
This past Monday, our Board of Education considered a series of actions to alleviate the overcrowding at Larson and to better support other programs in our district. Since November, a work group comprised of parents, staff, and Board members have been working through different options, to explore impacts.
After much deliberation and discussion during the Committee of the Whole meeting on February 6, on Monday a motion was made and unanimously approved to do the following for the 2025-2026 school year:
- relocating our kindergarten classrooms to the former Hillside Elementary building, to join our preK classrooms
- working with our community partner, the Mid Michigan Community Action Agency, to relocate their preschool program to our building on Spruce Street, which used to be Community Education and has housed our Hive Program for the last three years
- relocating our Hive Program to the main campus of the high school
As William Bridges, an expert in change and transition writes, "change is often quite uncomfortable, leading to resistance in ourselves and others, even when the need to move on is clear." We will focus on the transitions, and you can count on us to lead students, families, and staff through them skilfully and compassionately. As I shared with our staff yesterday, I believe our best days are still ahead of us.
Thank you for choosing Harrison Community Schools.
In partnership and with Hornet Pride,
Judy

HCS Mission Statement
The staff of Harrison Community Schools, in the spirit of a growing and changing community, pledge to educate all students by teaching the District Curriculum and beyond, ensuring the development of responsible learners prepared to take an active role in a complex society.
Student Voice
On February 3, members of the high school student council attended the Harrison City Council meeting. They advocated for use of the The Venue on Main for the junior/senior prom, and for a street closure on a side street for safety and a vintage car show. The prom theme is the '50s, and the classic cars will be on display. In addition, there will be a photo booth "car prop" for the student to use. We are so grateful for the Council's support of our students!

School Resource Officer
Our SRO, Deputy Chinavare, wears many hats on the job. Not only is he a member of law enforcement, he is also an educator, an informal counselor, and an emergency manager.
Deputy Chinavare promotes safety in and around our schools, and serves as a liaison between our schools and outside agencies. He may partner with teachers to educate students on law-related issues. He builds relationships with students, reinforces positive behaviors, and in conjunction with our mental health staff, connects our youth with needed services. Finally, Deputy Chinavare is our liaison with the Michigan State Police, and works with us to develop and implement our comprehensive safety plans.
Is Your Child a HS Athlete?
This is a reminder that if your child is playing a sport at the high school level, the parent/guardian must sign up to work concessions during the season. Please reach out to the sports boosters, carriejwhitaker@gmail.com, for the concessions link.

Restorative Practices
On Friday, February 7, staff participated in our first full day of restorative practices (RP) training, which is part of our strategic plan. Restorative practices have been a part of Michigan schools for about the last 7-8 years, and fundamentally changes the way in which behaviors are addressed.
RP aims first to build communities that are supported by clear agreements, authentic communication, and strong relationships. It includes proactive strategies as well as reactive tools to bring issues and conflicts forward in a helpful way. In addition to serving the cause of fairness and justice, restorative practices make our schools safe and supportive by fostering social and emotional learning.
These efforts also support our "developing assets" work, both within our community and across the region.

Interested in Volunteering?
Would you like to be more involved in your child's school? Do you have time during the school day or just after to volunteer? We would welcome you with open arms!
In order to volunteer, you simply fill out and submit an iChat form (linked below). This enables us to run a criminal background check in short order, to ensure the safety of all students you may come into contact with. Assuming nothing of concern shows up, you are all set to help out wherever your school may need you. The principal of each building determines the needs, and works with approved volunteers to meet those needs; some schools may have more needs than others. If you would like to view our Board Policies in regard to volunteering, please view Board Policy 4205 on our website.
Excused Absences
When communicating that your child will be absent, the following are coded as "excused" per Board Policy 5301:
- the student’s physical or mental illness (verification from a physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner is required after 4 consecutive days of absence for illness);
- severe weather;
- medical appointments for the student;
- death or serious illness of the student’s family member;
- attendance at a funeral, wedding, or graduation;
- appearance at court or for other legal matters;
- observance of religious holidays of the student’s own faith;
- college planning visits; and
- personal or family vacations (form must be completed and turned in at least five (5) days beforehand; see principal for form).
Updated COVID-19 Information
Based on information from the CDC and our local health department, upon testing positive, children should stay out of school until: 1) if there was a fever, 24 hours of being fever-free without the use of medicines to reduce fever; and 2) symptoms are improving. It is also recommended that a mask be worn for 5 days after returning to school. We will be following the same protocol for our staff.
The ABCs of a BOE Meeting
All Board meetings are open to the public, and are conducted in compliance with the Michigan Open Meetings Act. On rare occasions, the Board may go into closed session, but only as allowed by the OMA.
If it is your first time attending a Board meeting, you may not be familiar with the structure. Make sure you pick up an agenda on your way in, and if you intend to speak during the portion designated for public comments, please pick up a copy of Board Policy 2504, which is near the copies of the agenda. This will explain the parameters of the public comment portion of the agenda.
As you observe the Board conduct its business, the agenda will guide you. Common agenda sections are as follows:
- Opening of the Meeting (welcome, Pledge of Allegiance, additions/corrections to agenda/minutes, building instructional highlight, any other "organizational" items)
- Consent Agenda (items for approval that do not require a roll-call vote, and without objection from a Board member, can be considered all together)
- Non-Consent Agenda (one or more items that require a separate roll-call vote, such as budget approval)
- Informational Items (examples include resignations, other presentations, etc.)
- Public Comments (3 minutes each, Board members do not respond during the 3 minutes so that each speaker gets their full time; after, Board members may, but do not have to, pose questions or make statements)
- Communication (Superintendent's Report - includes subject matter of public comments; any other Board communication)
- Discussion Items (other matters any Board member may choose to speak about; may relate to public comments but not required)
- Adjournment
Within 8 business days of the meeting, minutes are posted on our website.
See below for information on our next meeting.
