PLHS Library Give Away!
Valentine's Day is one week away! To celebrate, the PLHS library is giving away a box set of the series, A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah Maas, to one lucky winner. Students and teachers, stop by the library and enter for your chance to win. This collection of romantasy is a must-have for any bookshelf! The winner will be announced on 2/14.
HOSA Blood Drive Information Meeting
🩸 Ready to make a difference? Join us for the HOSA meeting on Feb 13 at 7:30am or 3:30pm! We'll discuss our upcoming blood drive plans. We are going to make posters for the blood drive after school. Don’t miss out!
EmpowerHER
EmpowerHER is hosting a Valentine’s Day Gift Basket Raffle, and you won’t want to miss it!
For just $1 per ticket, you can enter for a chance to win an amazing basket filled with candy, a cozy teddy bear, a $50 Starbucks gift card, and so much more!
Tickets will be sold before school by the learning stairs all week long, ending on Wednesday, February 12th. Whether you’re treating yourself or someone special, this basket makes the perfect Valentine’s Day gift. Plus, this raffle is all to build excitement for our Galentine’s Day party on February 13th!, so make sure to enter and spread the love!
EmpowerHER's Galentine's Day Event
We are excited to announce EmpowerHER’s Galentine’s Party! Join us on February 13th at 3:30 PM in the Traditions Center for an afternoon filled with fun and love. We’ll have games, food, and fun activities planned. If you’d like to bring a dish or snack to share we would greatly appreciate it. All are invited as always and we hope to see you there!
Skills USA - Pie in the Face!
Everyone likes pie….but not in the face! This is your chance to work out those school frustrations. Skills USA are raffling a chance to put a pie in the face of your Monarch staff. Buy raffle tickets to enter in the container of your favorite staff member to pie one of them during the pep rally. Tickets will be sold during lunch at Kings Corner from February 10th-13th for $1 for a single ticket and $2 for THREE tickets!!! Today is the LAST day, so make sure you drop those names in the buckets!!!
PLHS Food Drive
The PLHS Food Drive to benefit the Sarpy Care Center is starting soon!
When: February 10 - 21, 2025
What: A food drive where every item you bring gives you a single raffle ticket. (You get 2 raffle entries for every item you bring to Parent Teacher Conferences on February 6th!)
There are eight $25 gift cards to be won!!!
German Club
Join German Club on Thursday February 13th from 3:30--4:15 for Board Games! We will play games by German companies, that are wildly popular in Germany, or that are related to something regarding German culture. No knowledge of German language necessary!
VSA Club
Green light! The Vietnamese Student Association is hosting a squid game event on Thursday, February 13th in Mrs. Nguyen's room (805) after school at 3:30! With the popularity of the Netflix series show, Squid Game, expressing their hardship and moralities, Vietnam and South Korea have similar complications, resulting in willingness of an opportunity of a lifetime. Stay tuned to this event where we will have fun games from Squid Game with a twist of Vietnamese culture, fun music, and prizes for winners! We can't wait to see y'all there!
Book Club
The spring session of the PLHS Book Club will start on Thursday, February 27th at the PLHS library. Join us every other Thursday from 3:30 - 4:00. All are welcome! You voted, and Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross will be our next book!
Track & Field
There will be a meeting on Tuesday February 25th from 3:30-4pm in the Excellence Center for any 9-12 athletes interested in coming out for Track and Field this spring. If you are not yet done with your winter sport by this day, see Coach Reimer (Girls) or Coach Pilakowski (Boys) after your season is complete to get all the necessary information.
2024 - 2025 Yearbook
Don’t miss out on your chance to order your full-color 2025 Yearbook for your student! You can reserve your copy for $80 until April 18, 2025. Please note: The PLHS Yearbook is a “fall delivery” book. Students will pick up their books at registration in August 2025. This allows for a book that can document the ENTIRE school year, including spring sports/activities, Prom & graduation.

Counseling Center
With this new school year, the counseling team has made a few changes. Please take note of your counselor as they may or may not have changed from the prior year. Counselors have divided the entire student population alphabetically this year. Should you need to see your counselor, please make use of the QR code, and complete the form to let your counselor know you need them. They will send a pass so you can meet with them.
- Mr. Caruso is your counselor if your student's last name begins with letters "A" through "C".
- Ms. Lawhorn is your counselor if your student's last name begins with letters "P" through "S".
- Ms. Madler is your counselor if your student's last name begins with letters "E", "N", "O", and "T" through "Z".
- Mr. Reyes is your counselor if your student's last name begins with letters "D" and "F" through "H".
- Ms. VanSteenbergen is your counselor if your student's last name begins with "I" through "M".
- Ms. Schnabel is our very awesome Social Worker. She splits her time between Monarch High and IDEAL.
ACT Prep Courses
Cornhusker State - Boys & Girls
Cornhusker Boys and Girls State
This yearly event brings high school juniors from around the state to experience the positive processes of self-government and good citizenship as practiced in democratic societies. Students participate in engaging activities, competitions and listen to established speakers. Many lifetime friendships with future leaders of our state are forged during this week.
The session is June 1-7 in Lincoln. Check out the respective websites for more information. Applications can be found online, or contact Mr. Caruso in the Counseling Center for hard copies. Candidates will interview to see who from our school is selected to go. The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary conduct the interviews and help with the cost. We are very grateful for their support.

Horatio Alger Association Scholarship
Attention Juniors!
The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans is now offering the Horatio Alger Scholarship to deserving students. To date, the Association has awarded over $265 million in scholarships to over 37,000 students. This scholarship is for students who have significant financial need and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. These scholarships range in award value from $10,000 to $25,000.
Eligibility criteria included:
- High School Junior
- Demonstrated Financial Need ($65,000 or lower adjusted gross household income)
- United States citizenship

Juniors interested in attending a summer camp in Chicago can now sign up to explore the world of economics, conduct meaningful STEM research, dissect ideas through thoughtful discourse, and experience what makes UChicago such a distinctive intellectual destination. The John B. Stetson Junior Scholarship
Attention Juniors,
Are you a high-achieving high school junior? The John B Stetson Junior Scholarship is NOW open. This scholarship aims to support high school juniors who have potential to carry forward John B. Stetson's legacy and make a difference in their community, embodying the same spirit of innovation, generosity, and determination that John B Stetson demonstrated. If you would like your counselor to nominate you for the prestigious award see your high school counselor. They can nominate you HERE. The nomination deadline is February 14."
**Scholarship is contingent upon the recipient’s enrollment at Stetson University in the fall of 2026.**

You can sign up on MaiaLearning and visit with the following college(s) in the Counseling Center. In MaiaLearning click the "Events" tab on the left. Click the "Actions" on the right of the visit you would like to attend. Click "Attend". You will be signed up to attend! Just show up in the Counseling Office on the date and time of the visit you signed up for. It is the student responsibility to attend this visit. No passes will be sent. (These are STUDENT ONLY visits)
