COLLEGE TIP OF THE WEEK
Letters of Recommendation - Why are they important/required?
From a University of Pennsylvania, Senior Associate Director
Speak as a learner and how they interact with others
Add information not captured elsewhere in the application
Create additional options for students to see and fulfill recommendations from people who know them well
For 9th and 10th Graders- What to Do Now
Get into the practice of interacting in your classes - take an active role in discussions and group activities.
Get to know your teachers - attend flex sessions when you need help or want to know more
For Juniors: Whom to Ask for College Recommendation Letters
From IvyWise
IvyWise recommends students identify whom they would like to write recommendation letters before the end of junior year. Junior year teachers or senior year teachers are usually the best for writing recommendations, since they are more likely to have taught you in a high-level course, taught you over a few years, and/or know you in different capacities.
It can also be beneficial to prioritize getting a recommendation letter from a teacher in the subject that is relevant to the course of study you intend to pursue. For example, if you plan to apply to college as an engineering major, a letter from your physics teacher might hold more weight than one from your English teacher.

Juniors: What you can do NOW to submit a Letter of Recommendation (LOR) as a Senior
As you begin to build your college list, find out if you need letters of recommendation to apply. After researching and understanding the requirements for each school, begin to figure out what teachers would best REINFORCE your application. (You can also wait and use your senior year teachers)
Ask your teacher(s) in person if they would be willing to write you a strong letter of recommendation.
If they agree to write a LOR for you , complete the Class of 2025 Teacher Letter of Recommendation Survey on Naviance. (Under your Initials , Surveys from your School)
Teachers rely on this survey to shape your LOR. You need to take your time and answer each question completely.
The better the survey, the better the LOR.
More details will be provided at the beginning of your senior year at the IB/College Grade Level Meeting on how to Officially Request a Teacher.
Teacher Letters of Recommendation
The Teacher Letter of Recommendation Survey is now available on Naviance. If you'd like more information about who to ask and how to get the best letters of recommendation, please attend our Flex Session on May 10th.

WUE- Tuition Discount Program for Regional Out of State Public Schools
What is WUE? (From the WUE website)
WUE (pronounced “woo-wee”) is the Western Undergraduate Exchange, a program of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). Through WUE, students in western states may enroll in more than 150 two-year and four-year college institutions at a reduced tuition level: 150 percent of the institution's regular resident tuition. WICHE member states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Search the WUE Online Database to see which institutions participate and which programs are available at the discounted WUE rate.
For more information, go to the their website http://www.wiche.edu/wue/students
Things to Remember
WUE colleges individually sets their policies and they are all different
Watch out for details, certain majors are sometimes excluded (nursing and engineering are often excluded)
Some are automatically given to students if admitted and some students must meet a given criteria
Look at Boise State's Tuition with and without the WUE
If you go to a public out of state college - you pay a lot more for your tuition than a resident.
Residents pay $8882.00
Non Residents pay $27076.00
One way you can cut costs is by choosing a WUE participating institution (others offer non resident scholarships as well).
