Memorial Day Silent Dismissal
June 5, 2025

In a powerful and moving display of respect and remembrance, students and staff from Cambridge Primary and Cambridge Intermediate Schools participated in the fifth annual Silent Dismissal on Friday, May 23, 2025. This solemn event—held in honor of Memorial Day—was designed to teach students the meaning of sacrifice and service through a quiet, reflective act of gratitude.
As the school day ended, there were no announcements, no chatter in the halls, and no rush to the buses. Instead, a reverent hush fell over the campus. Students silently exited their classrooms, each holding American flags, patriotic artwork, or hand-written messages of thanks. They walked with purpose and respect through the halls and out the doors—past a group of local veterans who stood watch, visibly moved by the tribute.
The veterans in attendance, including members of the Isanti County Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Task Force, were deeply honored by the gesture. Their presence helped reinforce the connection between the past and the present, allowing students to see firsthand the faces of those who have served our country. For many children, this moment served as their first personal interaction with a veteran, making the experience even more meaningful.
“The silence speaks louder than words ever could,” said one staff member. “It’s a powerful way to teach our students that Memorial Day is not just about a long weekend—it’s about remembering the brave men and women who gave everything for the freedoms we enjoy.”
This tradition is more than just a dismissal procedure—it is a living lesson in civics, character, and compassion. Over the past five years, the Silent Dismissal has grown into a cherished part of the school year. It reinforces the values of empathy and civic responsibility, and it highlights the deep respect our district holds for those who have served.
Teachers prepared students in the days leading up to the event by discussing the meaning of Memorial Day and the difference between it and other military observances like Veterans Day. Students also created thoughtful artwork and projects expressing their gratitude, many of which were displayed throughout the school buildings.
The impact of the event was captured beautifully in local news coverage, including Isanti-Chisago County Star’s piece titled “No Words, Just Respect”, and The County News Review’s photo gallery capturing the day's events.
As a school district, we are proud to support events that not only enrich our students academically, but also help shape them into thoughtful, respectful, and community-minded individuals. The Silent Dismissal is a shining example of how small actions, done with sincerity, can leave a lasting impression. We extend our deepest gratitude to the veterans who joined us, and to the students and staff whose participation helped make this year’s tribute so meaningful.
Let us continue to honor those who gave all by teaching the next generation to never forget.
