A MESSAGE FROM MR. DUSTIN HITT
What is it about October? When the leaves start changing and we feel the chill in the air, I think there is just an internal need for hot apple cider, soups, and pumpkin cookies (it is hard to beat pumpkin cookies). What a wonderful time of year for kids to go outside, play in the leaves, go trick-or-treating, and just have one last hoorah before the weather turns colder. It is truly a magical time.
October at the Northeast School Corporation is a wonderful time as well. Our first nine weeks will be completed (can you believe it?), and the students and teachers are all looking forward to fall break. Most of our clubs are underway, and our BETA members are starting to plan for and look forward to their convention next month. We will be ushering out volleyball, cross country, golf and football while at the same time welcoming basketball and continuing dance and cheer. We will celebrate Red Ribbon Week this month as well. There are just so many great things happening for our students this time of year that you have to be extremely excited to be part of T-Bird Nation! If you or your child is interested in any of the happenings this October, or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s school, and they will do their best to assist you.
I hope this October brings for you and your family the kind of joy and happiness it has always brought to me. May you enjoy the changing leaves, the cooler weather, the spooks, and the overabundance of candy corn……and pumpkin cookies, of course!

8th Grade Raft Trip
On Tuesday, September 24, North Central 8th grade students attended the annual raft trip that is sponsored by the Sullivan Soil and Water Conservation District. Students rafted from Hutsonville to Merom Bluff where they ate a picnic lunch.
After lunch, the students rotated through six stations where they learned about topics such as trees, recycling, knot tying, Native American history, water filtration, and invasive plants.
The students had a great time on the trip. They will spend the next few weeks writing essays about their experiences for a chance to win $100 from the Sullivan Soil and Water Conservation District. Two winners will be selected from North Central.
Radioactive Decay
The Chemistry 1 students have been recently studying radioactive decay. We did an activity simulating half-life with pennies and paper clips.

Shelby Tharp's and Dawn Varner's 2nd Graders just wrapped up their unit over Early Asian Civilizations. NENE Junior Beta Induction
NENE recently inducted 25 members into National Junior Beta Club. We will be completing various service projects in our community in the coming months. We will also be participating in the Indiana State Beta Club convention in November.
Lessons from a Classic Tale
Third grade students at Northeast North Elementary studied the themes of Friendship/Loyalty, Hospitality, Responsibility, and Irresponsibility while reading the classic tale, The Wind in the Willows. Each student was tasked with writing an opinion paragraph which included their opinion on the character from the story that best demonstrated one of the themes. Students used Graphic Organizers to plan their paragraph. Students did an excellent job of organizing their writing piece as well as including reasons and examples from the story to support their opinion. All published work was posted in “Toad Hall” for display.
NORTHEAST EAST
NEEE Junior Beta Induction
NEEE Beta Club inducted 14 new members into their club on Sept. 26th. A short induction ceremony was held by the current 5th grade members to welcome the newest members into the organization. Congratulations to all inductees!
New Ways to Use Energy
4th grade wrapped up their first Science Unit about energy by inventing new and improved ways to use energy. Some new improvements included a portable drum set, an all-in-one laundry service machine, and a robo dog that does more than protect you, and a solar powered portable pizza oven.
Guest Art Teacher
Amy Campbell is a passionate and dedicated guest art teacher at Northeast East Elementary, where she shares her artistic expertise with students every Tuesday. Her classes cover a variety of art techniques, including paper folding, follow-along drawing, tie-dyeing, watercolor painting, and more. Amy believes art is a vital component of the school curriculum and aims to inspire creativity in every student. Her enthusiasm is evident as students return to their classrooms excitedly sharing the new techniques they’ve learned. Amy’s presence has made art an anticipated and cherished part of the weekly routine at Northeast East Elementary.
Reading Buddies & More
In past years, 5th grade and Kindergarten students have partnered up for a traditional Reading Buddy program, where the older students read books to their Kindergarten buddies and then take an Accelerated Reader test together. This year, we’re taking this partnership to a new level with an exciting addition—journaling!
After reading and testing on the book, the 5th grade students and their Kindergarten buddies work together to create a journal entry. The 5th graders write about the book, focusing on the main ideas and details, while the Kindergarteners bring the story to life by illustrating the setting, characters, or plot. This collaborative project not only deepens comprehension and creativity but also builds a stronger bond between the two grade levels, making learning even more enjoyable for everyone involved!
